Continuously dumbing down the NZ education system so that everybody achieves has been total madness. A student can get 15 credits towards NCEA 1 for picking up rubbish in the school playground. What happened to School Cert in form five ( O levels) or Sixth form very in form 6 ( A levels). Making everybody feel good is not academic achievement. Scrap NCEA now and go for Cambridge O levels and Cambridge A levels. NZ high school students will not have a good life if they cannot Read and Write and Count. Much of the stuff taught in high schools is inconsequential fluff only.

You didn’t expect anything else did you. There hasn’t been any focus on reading writing and basic maths for years

When a lot of teachers think you can change sex and don't understand the function of grammar we shouldn't be surprised

How is it that we have dumbed down generations of students who are still "smart" enough to "game the system." There is a NEED to takae ACTION now, not more reviews, not more hand-wringing. CORRECTIVE action. CANCEL ALL NCEA Level 1 Literacy passes. Introduce proper testing examinations to determine who is and who isn't at the required reading and literacy standards. All those who are not, are back-classed and have to take an extra year at school until they are competent to read and write at level for their success in society, in jobs, and in the basics of life - reading prescription labels, forms for a passport, etc etc. AND take aside ALL the teachers who have failing students, and put them on a "re-education" programme at NEW teachers training Colleges - not theoretical courses at University of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, but the basics of how to teach reading and writing. AND THEY TAKE A 20% PAY CUT UNTIL THEY DO.

But I identify as a person that is good at NCEA and always passes! I'm outraged I didn't pass. Someone needs to be punished for me failing!

You have to wonder, if a Year 11, Level 1 student fails literacy and numeracy, how did they pass their other Year 11 credits? And think - the literacy and numeracy are set at Year 10, or lower levels. Are teachers are passing students too easily on their Year 11 internal assessments? Is it all on the students? Or rather, have the teachers lost the ability to teach? Should students just advance according to age regardless of ability? Or, should they be held back until they acquire the level of ability required to pass at the next level.

The scary thing about this is that with the government flooding the country with cheap migrant labour, education has never been as important to get a job now, so what are all these kids going to be heading into?

Get rid of NCEA, implement IB or Cambridge = internationally recognised standards...then we will know where our kids stand...there are shortages of qualfied teachers for IB & Cambridge....but they can always be re-trained...with better incomes as incentives...

The exams were not written in Hindi, so most kiwi kids couldn't even read them!

I almost guarantee these students did far better than NZ European students. These cultures value education far more than we do.
