It's very strange, when I go on a Keto diet, my weight goes down, energy goes up and I NEVER crash! However, when I follow the doctors orders (low fat higher "healthy" carbs) I feel horrible, tired all the time and I can't stay lean for ANYTHING! It's crazy that people don't accept the fact that you must do what makes you FEEL optimized. I don't even eat fruit anymore!

I have been on an extremely strict form of keto for over a year because of epilepsy. I eat fewer than 10 net carbs per day and between 200 and 300 grams of fat a day. I lost 15 lbs without doing any exercise. I still have seizures but they are way more spaced apart (10 days, sometimes several weeks) whereas before I was having them almost every day. The diet works but it is extremely hard to follow because carbohydrates are readily available everywhere. My cholesterol has not changed at all on this diet.

I had a widow maker, two stent later, now on a keto diet. Three months have lost 17 kilos of weight. Back to gym, surfing and on the bicycle. No sugar , about twenty grams of carbohydrate a day. I've never felt better.intermittent fasting 18/6 . My cardiologist was horrified at what my diet is now. Works for me.

Me too, Axe. MI last Sept at 56, got to ER within 5 minutes, helicopter ride, two stents, went strict keto on 3/7/19, doing OMAD last 2 months, down 40 lbs from 225 to 185, heading for 170. Intensely motivated, to say the least. Just hoping I made the dietary transform in time, cuz my CACS score that I got 2 months ago (for baseline purposes) is bad. It seems that, if Paul Mason and others are right that grains/carbs/sugars rather than saturated fats drive atherosclerosis, then perhaps keto lifestyle can halt the progression of this progressive disease. It would seem that keto hits at the root cause - glycation/oxidation of LDL leading to atherosclerosis, whereas statins screw with one's liver and who knows what all else to buy the user a few extra days of life on average. I do not doubt the Paul Masons, it all make perfect convincing sense to me. The cardiologists at Mayo do not like to hear this. Meanwhile, A1C down to 5, trigs way down, HDL up, but total chol and LDL up sharply. Disconcerting, high stakes. Quite the personal saga. Best to you. And my thanks to a good man, Dr. Mason.

I was given Atorvastatin 20 mg following a mild stroke 27 months ago. After watching a video in Nov 2018, on the side effects of statins, (12 listed, of which I appeared to have about half to some degree), I stopped taking the drug. I was to find out that I was suffering an unlisted and severe side effect. For over a year, I was having daily and worsening choking episodes whenever I drank or ate and did not concentrate on the swallowing process. I was totally at a loss to the cause so put it down to "getting old", (68 yo)!! Upon ceasing the statins, on 1st Dec 18, the choking stopped on the third day and I have not choked once since. The statins were paralysing or desensitising my epiglottis, which I can now feel reacting to a potential choking situation. In addition, a week after stopping statins I was able to stop wearing knee braces and putting Dencorub on my elbows to help alleviate arthritic type pain. I might add that I am T2D and changed to a LCHF diet in Dec 18. Lost weight, blood sugar good, (no longer taking Metformin) and bp lower!

my mother is on statin (rosuvastatin) and she has very frequent choking episodes too! Everytime she eats basically this will happen. We don't know what caused it and her doctor doesn't know what caused it either. I wish i can ask her to stop taking it even for a while, but she is very stubborn and only listens to her doctor and her doctor insists that she must take statins (she had stroke before). She also has debiliatating knee pain that severely limits her mobility.

Thank you so much Bluedog for posting about this choking side effect. I've had the exact same experience and had no idea what was happening. At a party it was embarrassing. I had to run and hide so I could let the food and water come out of my mouth while I wondered what kind of episode I was having. I'm 9 years younger, have been on keto since my heart attack May 2018 and the VA still has me on 80mg Atorvastatin Calcium. It's hard going against what YOUR doctor is telling you to do. Thanks to you and all I've read and seen, I'm finished with it.

I had a TIA and was told to take a statin. My "event" was caused by a spike in my blood sugar (according to the neurologist I saw later) which in turn caused my blood pressure to go up very high. I was on statins for 4 years, in my 50s. I started them when my Cholesterol went up from 140 to 190 in menopause. I started to suffer from extreme muscle pain, back pain, weak ankles, fuzzy brain etc. I had NO idea it was the statins and my Dr said it was from growing older. A neighbor told me he had become weak and had muscle weakness and could hardly walk. Finally was diagnosed with statin neuropathy from Mayo Clinic .He suffered permanent damage to his muscles. I stopped Statins after falling and breaking my wrist and spraining my ankle. My ankle just gave way while walking down some stairs . My dr still insists this was “aging”. I have Cholesterol in the 390s now, do not take statins. No muscle pain, weakness, problems. NO back pain, I can again do my own housework, I cross country ski, bike, hike. Just got back from overseas and walked 5-8 miles a day, no foot pain. I eat LCHF, only occasional grains and sometimes potatoes. I am 5’5 and weigh 122lbs. I fought for YEARS to maintain a 134lb weight with exercise and low fat diets and had a fat belly around the middle which was just “normal “ aging . Recently I was talked into statins again, took them for a week and could hardly roll out of bed in the morning! So, no more statins. My ratios are bad. I’m a bit scared, but I feel good, strong and healthy.

I exercise five times a week high intensity. I'm 57 . Heart disease is in my family but they all smoked. Diets were poor and my mum had COPD from smoking . I've never smoked and even cut down on alcohol .
I have a similar issue with the health insurance lately. I'm 56, quite fit, exercise regularly 3 to 4 times a week, non-smoker, and eating healthy (no sugar, low carbs). Basically no one believes my age. Comes the tests for a new health insurance, excellent on all points, however my cholesterol level is high, and the insurance is pointing out this issue like I'm having cancer... Go figure. How to go about it? Why the insurance industry does not adjust to the fact that cholesterol is not the culprit?

Okay. Here's the dilemma of 6 months ketogenic diet (plenty of exercise) and an annual checkup. Cholesterol 303 mg/dL (up from 177 year ago), LDL Calculated 231 (up from 121). Cholesterol/HDL ratio 5.7 (up from 3.9) . All of these out of the 'Standard Range' I know what comes next, statin, cut out that keto stuff.... I've dropped 20 lbs, doing at least 8 hours exercise/week (I guess I'd need to double this to look like Patient 1 in the video). How do you have a discussion with a medical professional when your side of the argument is "I saw it on KZbin?" Low Carb Down Under does have speakers with legitimate credentials and here there are even references(well done). Bottomline is I'm not qualified to disagree. (As an American I am well aware of our unspoken right, The 0 Amendment: The right to have a completely idiotic notion and be louder than anybody else about it. This supersedes the First Amendment: The right of free speech. In practice the guy with the most dangerous wrong idea has the right to be louder and yammer on longer than anyone else present--especially if they actually understand the topic. I don't want to be 'that guy'.)

The 0 Amendment, lmao. That sums us up. I've been doing strict keto for over a year and it has been the most successful therapy I've ever used to control my seizures. Game changing, really. I consume at most a net 10 g of carbs per day. If you're eating too many carbs, your body may be fluctuating back and forth between ketosis and glucose-hunger. If you have a ketone monitoring device (blood ones are best), try using that. Also, be wary of *which* fats you're consuming. I try to get a huge variety: seriously, my cabinet is stocked with different oils man. Walnut, avocado, hemp seed, peanut, olive, almond, safflower, and so on. They each have a different profile of fats. Don't just eat butter or olive oil. And you still have to avoid trans fats like the plague. Good luck!

What is the better measure of LDL particle number? LDL-P as measured by NMR, or APO B? Also, in most cases I am under the impression that high LDL-P or APO B is correlated with high LDL-C. Hence the focus on lowering LDL. Bottom line, do you worry about a patient with high LDL-P or high APO B if they are on a ketogenic diet? As I understand your argument, if you have a low Hgb A1c then even a high LDL-P or high APO B is not dangerous. Is this correct? Finally, is it high glucose or hyperinsulinemia that is responsible for damage to the glycocalyx and endothelium? Is there an A1c level that lets you be comfortable with a patient with high LDL-P or high APO B? Thanks

I’m glad others like to perform the research because I’ll just stick to reading and listening to it :)

On the fraudulently low statin "intolerance" numbers that are often quoted, they include only people who stopped taking it. My mother had shocking pain in her knees and severe muscle pain and muscle wasting in her legs caused by Crestor. When she begged her doctor to let her try dietary changes to get off Crestor, she shrieked "You could DIE if you stop taking it!". She continued taking it despite the physical damage it caused her and the pain and big life restrictions it caused. She would not appear on the list of those who couldn't tolerate statins because she was bullied into continuing to take it.

If glycated LDLs are a major factor in heart disease, why didn't the traditional Okinawans (80% carb diet) have much?
@drott1502 жыл бұрын
It could be that their LDL levels are very low. Lower levels of LDL would mean fewer LDL particles available to be glycated. Also, if their diet is rich in antioxidants (which sweet potatoes are rich in) that may also play a role in mitigating glycated LDL particles.

I learned from a naturopathic doctor seminar that people that consume too much calcium and not enough vitamin k end up not channelling the calcium into the right locations and this doctor said this calcium build up in the wrong place can end up in arteries...its due to less grass fed animals and less greens or lack of...which many of us are id think for sure not getting enough greens and usually more dairy so I'm guessing a lot of heart issues can also be brought on by this issue as apposed to cholesterol build up...something to also focus on!!been keto 2 years first six to eight months cholesterol went down now I'm carb cycling healthy carbs and it's gone up...I have two months to get it lower or doc is gojng to push me on statin...I'm not gojng to...I'm almost off Ramopril for high blood pressure and it's even dipping low now....on two years on keto!Lost 120 less Apnea outcomes almost off Ramopril and can go almost five days fasting after id been unable to go two to four hours only without eating id feel so very sick...even on vegetarian and what I thought was a super healthy mass veggie n fruit diet!!Had to share my story....thank you for your video

Will a safe carbohydrate daily intake amount ever be a measurable unit??? It's coming to a point within nutrition where it's becoming a belief that ANY amount of carbs at all are BAD, which I will actually be okay with anyway. ...
@ajcastellon59035 жыл бұрын
It's dependent on the person things like insulin sensitivity/resistance, your body type etc not all carbs are bad just remember vegetables have carbs as well it's about finding your personal threshold that will allow you to hit your personal goals be it low carb or keto diet methods and rate of weight loss desired

What about triglycerides? You did not mention them at all. The body reacts not just on one component (LDL). There is multisystem processes. No family history hypertriglyceridemia, went on Leto diet for 8 weeks, and triglyceride levels were 30% higher than normal .

Well I’m on a ketogenic diet and my LDL is pattern B LDL-C 190 with LDL-P over 2200 triglycerides at 155. And my cholesterol was normal before my keto diet. So you can’t just say that Pattern B is caused by sugar since I’m not eating sugar. Some people have a genetic predisposition for their low density lipoproteins to become relatively small with slower uptake.

Interesting. I've been doing keto 2 years. Latest numbers are total 255, HDL 84, LDL 146 Trigs 128. I quit statins because of the side effects. On 40mg Atorvastatin and 10mg Ezetimibe numbers were Total 100, HDL 61, LDL 25 and Trigs 68. I felt awful though.

Those numbers are intriguing. Been doing keto since Aug 2019 and my Lipid panel just this week is LDL 131, HDL 82, TRI 66. What exactly are you eating on your program? Have you removed all seed oils from your diet? What is your daily carb intake?

Very well explained. When others have an opinion and don't explain how things work in simple terms, it indicates their own lack of knowledge or agenda, and shields their opinion from scrutiny. The same tactic worked to buffalo people into the Food Guide Pyramid and indoctrinated medical students. Thank God for critical thinkers like Robert Atkins who started out with, "There is something wrong with this picture". Thank God for people like Paul Mason who researched and refined the science that explains why this is so, and enabled him to refine protocols for good health. There are many other unnamed heroes who supplied the in vivo tests over large studies.
@fattony62995 жыл бұрын
Dr Mason says that by reducing the number of pattern-A LDL particles, the ratio between pattern A and pattern B is made worse, and that this is associated with worse cardiovascular outcomes. To check this out, I looked up the paper referenced in his slideshow: doi.org/10.1161/01.CIR.0000141728.23033.B5 -- But this seems to indicate that taking 80mg Atorvastatin results in improved clearance of OxPL, which "may contribute to a reduction in ischemic events after ACS." Did I miss something? Am I looking at the right paper?

He only referenced that study to back his claim that OxLDL autoantibodies and Lp(a) are equivalent measures of oxidized LDL in the blood.

so I have 486 nmol/L LPa. my apo B is 160mg/dL (2909 nmol/L). So, 1of 6 of my apoB/LDL is LPa. So, if I get bloodwork to measure oxidized LDL you hypothesize that it would be the same number as my LPa reading. wow, do I really want to know that!? for $170 I can find out.

Strange thing I have found about being on a Keto diet, twice now. I had a bad cold, and couldn't eat anything really, so again as a last resort I ate two packets of chocolate coated biscuits in one sitting!! As expected my Blood sugar went up....to around 6.4 max LoL.....then two hours later 5.2 and my ketones 0.7 !! Now insulin is supposed to suppress ketone production. I can only surmise that my insulin sensitivity has improved markedly and that that the sugar was dealt with very efficiently, and the system returned to normal, and body started producing ketones again. And a few hours after that, eating nothing, ketones 1.1 This amazes me. I wonder if anybody in regular ketosis wants to try this experiment with sugar.
