Dr James Muecke, 2020 Australian of the Year, has been instrumental in lobbying for the current Australian Parliamentary Inquiry into diabetes. This is currently underway, the membership containing several non-practicing doctors. While formal submissions have now closed, we encourage everyone with concerns regarding the Australian Dietary Guidelines to make contact with one or several members of this inquiry. Their contact details can be found here; www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_...
Dr Paul Mason's submission to the parliamentary inquiry can be found here (#402); www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_...
The membership of the current Australian Dietary Guidelines expert committee (of which Dr James Muecke was blocked despite a public promise from the then Health Minister, Greg Hunt) can be found here; www.nhmrc.gov.au/health-advic...
The chair has previously conducted systematic reviews for the World Health Organisation and they continue to meet behind closed doors. We encourage you to express your concerns about potential bias in the process to committee members.

These guidelines killed both of my parents. They contributed to the disturbance in my microbiome, and in all likelihood, my neurodiversity. The thing that almost killed me, though, was the copper coil. It is as much of a scam as the food pyramid, and has destroyed the lives of countless women. I think about what my life would have been like without these fake "science" health interventions... and then I stop thinking about it because the damage is just unspeakable. Im thankful that the truth is slowly getting out.

I starved myself fat and sick on 1200 low fat, high fibre calories a day for decades. Had an active job and went to the gym daily. Barely fit a size 18 Canada. Took seed oils out of the diet and switched to the old 1950s British diet in the prologue of Good Calories, Bad Calories. Dropped to a 6/8. Stayed there. That was over 14 years ago. Never will return to the low fat death diet. The British diet also saved my husband's life.

@@shun2240I don't really know, but let me guess! Our breakfast was nothing or eggs and bacon. We swapped those for cornflakes or frosties. Our lunch was at a greasy spoon cafe serving a square meal. Typically meat, two veg and potato. We swapped that for sandwiches. Our dinner was a beef stew. We swapped that for a Chinese rice meal or a pizza. My parents, in the sixties, thought a Chinese meal was a very unusual dinner and could not imagine having an Indian meal. We had Chinese once a fortnight.

I was born in 1965. My older siblings pre 1957. My darling mother fervently adopted the healthy heart guidelines of the 70’s, and I received the products of her “heartfelt healthy endeavours”, since then, I have battled with my weight for 50 odd years, since I was 7. My older siblings not so much, I believe because they probably had more saturated fat in their diet. Sadly I also went on to become a coronary care nurse and in that role further purported the so called healthy NZ heart foundation food pyramid. It totally sickens me to think what I told people post heart attack in the 1990’s. 18 months ago I adopted a low carb higher protein lifestyle and hey presto my weight came down. However year of restrictions and dieting have left their mark both physically and mentally. It’s not something you just shut off after 50 years, sugar addiction is real and the offending food is everywhere. Thank you Dr Paul Mason, presentations like this reinforce to me that I’m on the right track now, so informative and enlightening, the history of these lies must be shared everywhere.

I suggest going zero carb for a couple of weeks, or long term if you prefer... but it is necessary to kick the carbohydrate addiction. I, like you, have been struggling with my weight since I was 9 years old... after using carbs to cope with the loss of my mother... I've finally gotten over my addiction... and I've tested my cravings a couple of times... and high sugar deserts or drinks were "meh" to me... they tasted good... I enjoyed it... I just wasn't driven for it... and afterwards, I didn't experience any serious cravings. Occasionally, I have something like a "craving" where I remember a treat was good... but I'm always underwhelmed when I cheat... and, for me... that made my cravings less because it was like confirmation that my experience was not rewarding enough to care to crave it again. I imagine this is how people have a healthy relationship with treats... it is enjoyable enough to indulge from time to time, but they aren't driven by it.

I understand that Crisco 'bought' the American Heart Association, from it's inception, to further promote their toxic seed oils as a healthy substitute for lard. Fortunately I quit most such oils and referred to margarine as "marginal" decades ago, adopting olive oil (EVOO) as my primary oil of choice for everything from salad dressing to cooking 30 yrs ago. Still prefer olive but not apposed to some butter and coconut oil or nut oils but shun most all seed oils. Never even been flabby but also wasn't raised on nor ever developed a taste for ubiquitous sodas. Bigger take away here is to *question authority* on EVERYTHING.

It took around 8 months for all these problems to resolve. Since 2020 I've been completely pain free and never felt and looked healthier. I'm only eating fatty meats, seafood, eggs and dairy. Prior to that I was eating the mainstream version of a healthy diet (lots of veggies, fruit, whole grains, low fat, eating the rainbow etc) for decades and watching my health slowly decline.

I started struggling with weight when i was about 7 or 8, in Primary school I learnt about the "Healthy Food Pyramid" (this is early 80s. I wanted to be thin and healthy so bad - I stopped eating lollies and chocolate and started eating most breads and cereals. Following the Healthy Eating Pyramid I had learnt for my whole childhood - I became morbidly obese by 13. I developed the idea that something was wrong and bad about me be cause I was trying to eat healthy but I was just a fat hopeless kid. It destroyed my life. I decided later to fast and just stop eating - so i only eat fruit and veggies - i lost weight but put it back on when i stopped fasting. When I was 40 I was pre diabetic and had a blood sugar of 11mmol in the morning before breakfast. I panicked and stopped eating. I had seen nutritionists , doctors and dieticians and i nearly had surgery to cut my stomach out. But with my pre diabetes i looked at how to get my blood sugar down and ran into the carnivore diet. I started only eating meat - meat meat meat, nothing but meat (Lamb, Beef, Fish, Pork, chicken with things like apple cider vinegar, salt, egg, butter and cream) in 5 weeks my blood sugar was down under 6 and i had lost about 15 kg, and i was really feeling happy and well. If only someone had bloody told me - and if only my bloody school didn't teach me the healthy eating pyramid.

It wasn't until I moved to the western part and was overwhelmed by what was on offer in the supermarkets and fast food chains. Of course I tried everything new and felt bad. colon irritable. gallstones. underweight. It took me a long time to realize that my stomach wasn't used to processed food. but I experienced the boom in fiber. Interesting side note. The “K” ration issued in WWII was developed by Ansel Keyes as a hi energy food source in concentrated form. It consisted of a large amount of animal fat and all kinds of meats ground into a thick paste that was then heated and dehydrated to clear out the moisture and packed into sealed wax cartons for soldiers i the field. The “K” ration was named for Ansel Keys. (Also had loads of sugar and some grains un it). It’s also been reported that Ancel keys actually altered the data from the Minnesota study and alter data from several European studies that debunked. The fat is bad theory, and actually pointed to carbohydrates being the greater problem.

Data from the larger set of nations ALSO demonstrated that heart disease and mortality both ramp up substantially with higher consumption of both animal fat and animal protein. Guess the people selling their books and endorsements forgot to tell you that part. In the end, Keys was right about saturated fat.

It started even earlier. During WW2 there was extremely heavy focus on producing grains in bulk to feed the troops and hungry freed populaces in the warzones with cheap food. This had started massive subsidising of farms to grow these products and purchase the necessary equipment. After the war, there was now a sudden massive excess production of grains, grain prices were going to plummet, and those farmers, who were a strong voting block, were going to go bankrupt, and what would that do to their votes? So politicians decided that "something had to be done" to create more demand for grains. What better way than to promote grain consumption by having the health authorities manufacture a campaign telling people that grain consumption is good for your health? And after all, the US army and marines had won WW2 on a grain based diet, so now was the time! The food pyramid was born, and it's been used for its intended purpose to control consumption in order to create artificial demand ever since.

Good job Dr. Mason -- A study was just released yesterday (Dec 8, 2023) on lean mass hyper responders (LMHR) that further puts a nail in the coffin of the accepted dietary guidelines ... it is becoming more and more clear that dietary saturated fat and cholesterol have been vilified, when it is prolonged too high carbs that is likely the real issue.

That study proves no such thing: It is about a fringe population and we have zero evidence about whether those high LDL levels will cause them heart disease in the long run. Meanwhile, the best overall long-term health outcomes have consistently been achieved on whole food diets that are dominated by plant foods and have LESS fat than the US dietary guidelines suggest. If the guidelines are to be faulted, it's because they allow for TOO MUCH fat and too much added sugar and too much meat and too much dairy, and too much processed foods.

@@karlwheatley1244 "zero evidence about whether those high LDL levels will cause them heart disease in the long run" you no longer believe atherosclerosis is the mechanism at play for long term CVD outcomes? there's no evidence that the mere existence of LDL causes heart disease in the first place. Interesting you mention fringe populations though, I'm sure you have touted mendelian studies as strong evidence, is that not your stance any more? Guidelines are to be faulted because they are not evidence based, they should easily be completely dismissed by any one with a high school education
