A lot of British NRs in Cheltenham was down to ground this year I'd say. And the Irish couldn't buy a winner years ago and there was no tantrums thrown to even thing's out then, the British were delighted and the Irish had to get where they are now on their own hard work. This stinks of pure jealousy to me. They're happy to buy Irish ptp horse's but they're not getting the same results. Willie sources a lot from France. Willie started from rock bottom and built the yard he has from hard work. If you're an owner spending 100s of thousands on a horse then they are entitled to send their horse's to whoever they want.

Owners can indeed send their horses to whoever they wish. But there won’t be anybody to send them to if the lack of competitiveness isn’t addressed because there won’t be a sport left given the direction of travel. I don’t agree with some of Dr Newland’s suggestions, but admire him for making them.

exactly!! lets cut the brits off from buying our breeds which was basically every chelt winner last week haha! most of them have been bred in Ireland or bred from horses from Ireland. They wouldn't have a winner except for our help i say leave it to them we create our own Racing Festival open to all international except england. We've the best horses and some of the best prize money i don't see why we haven't been doing this for years anyway.

Things go in phases. I think what Dr Newland really means is we have to support the British racing industry whilst they are suffering. Good luck to the Irish and their great horses. That is one thing we have in common - we all love the horses.

If you always do what you always did, you'll always get what you always got. ~ ^^^ Yeah this comment is basically it.^^^ I mean it's not like the Irish started racing yesterday we fecking came up with Steeple chasing national hunt chasing for godness sake church bell to church bell, we've been a horse country for 100s if not 1000s of years. We are Spiritually connected to horses in this country & not Royally connected like other countries who used their horse stock for wars and or royalty. One of the earliest breeders of the Thoroughbred was D'Arcy the Elder from Galway Ireland, who bred D'Arcy Yellow Turk in 1650 which was one of the very first and important sires of the modern thoroughbred. The king of Britain at that time summons D'arcy to breed and run the royal shed they held in England. Which he did and that's how it basically started the wave of thoroughbreds.

Irish trainers don’t come over every Saturday to win the big races, as Nick challenged him on, so his arguments seemed to fall down on facts. And what would a British non-Irish participants look like, … it would be a second division league. That would mean even more British owners taking even more horses to Ireland. … if it’s really about one lot being better than others, then market forces should prevail. You can’t penalise the winning trainers and connections by trying to stop them by the equivalent of hiking them in the weights. You don’t get better by complaining about others being better.

Sour grapes, no-one cared in the 80s or 90s ,when the Irish couldn't get a winner, because the English were buying all the good Irish horses. English racing has been broken by the greed of BHA and bookmakers. By putting on way to many terrible races, with terrible prize money. So look at the mess that was allowed to happen. Comment update, wtf is he talking about, ban Irish horses from racing in England. 😂😂😂😂 BHA have tried to help by rigging the handicaps at Cheltenham . Up your game don't bring it down. Just think these are the same people who were saying it's not right when the Australians changed the entry rules for foreign horses running in the Melbourne cup because of the amount of runners British trainers were having in it. The double standard is laughable. If you took irish sponsorship owners and breeding out of England it would be 10 times worse

There would be no racing in UK if there were no owners, trainers and STABLE STAFF. What organisation put the pressure on for Sunday night racing - Stable Staff only get 1 1/2 days off every 2 weeks. Why the need for summer jump racing? Kevin Blake gave some home truths about why Willie Mullins is so good - Willie Mullins has a huge team sourcing potentially brilliant horses and buys them before they ever reach the sales ring. Many owners spending a 6 figure sum on a horse do not want a store horse (a young horse with unproven record and which may take 3-4 yrs before it ever reaches a track) but a horse that can be raced the following week. It is not just UK racing that is suffering, many smaller Irish yard cannot compete with the Mullins/Elliot domination of races. As Kim Bailey said a few weeks ago - with the amount he has won in the last year he would be 4th in the Irish Champion Trainer - but in the UK he is 24th. It is a Mullins/Elliot domination of NH racing - not an Irish domination.

For an educated man Dr. Newland`s arguments are bordering on buffonery. English Trainers simply need to up their game and be more ambitious with their horses. Corach Rambler`s connections were rewarded by their initiative by their horse finishing 3rd in the Gold Cup. English Trainers seem by and large seem to me to be more conservative in their targets for their top horses, and less inclined to run them often. When i first started watching racing Fred Winter had most of the top horses of the time in his stable, Crisp, Bula, Pendil, Killiney, The Dealer, Midnight Court, Lanzarote. You didn`t hear the likes of Fulke Walwyn, Fred Rimell, Edward O`Grady, Peter Easterby or Jim Dreaper complaining, they went about finding and producing their own champions.

Well said. English horses once used to plunder the good Irish NH races before the improved economic conditions allowed good Irish horse to be kept in Ireland which allowed the growth of Irish stables to get to where it is now. They hardly even dare cross the Irish sea anymore ( Even with the strong advantage their handicapper has given them the last couple of years ). It stikes me that there are too many average English trainers who are throwing the toys out of the pram now that they cant dodge any real challenge and go for soft races. Maybe the Irish should ban all English sprinters from plundering the good flat sprints in Ireland where they seem to have a advantage, or are they more up for the challenge and competition.

@@paulrichards6894Thank you for your comment. A regulator can always change the rules, but should do so only when it is the right thing to do. The sport is dying a death in the UK and Ireland, so something needs to change to protect it. Whether or not that is a rule change I’m not sure, but the status quo will continue to do more harm than good. I have an open mind on what exactly needs to change, but something has to.

Lots of criticism of Newland but not much in the way of constructive answers. I can remember when there was much less crossing of the Irish Sea and the sport was fine then. It's quite possible that in the future big grade ones will have all the horses having the same trainer - not good.

It's quite simple...the BHA and the IRHA should implement an FFP type of cap...Mullins ran over 75 runners at the festival....so just use the value of his stable and say you can't compete in the UK if you cross that ?imit..ie u have to sell to make space for the incoming crew..its a high benchmark but will force potential owners somewhere else...don't care what anyone says its not a good look to have 1 trainer with half the field
