Great game. Some of the platforming in it is kind of cheap, which turns some levels into a case of trial & error, and I managed to get stuck in the wall on the FINAL level of all places. That being said, I found myself having a ton of fun with this one. The extra levels give you some incentive to go back and replay levels to beat your old score... even if the unlockable levels don't do a whole lot for me. But at least the option to unlock them is there. Some levels were very frustrating and the difficulty seemed to spike at random between the acts and certain spots in the game are kind of a testament to why Sonic games don't feature a whole lot of precision platforming. There's also the issue of the animals disappearing completely from their location if you take damage too close to their spawn point. This requires you to go off-screen far enough to allow them to respawn, then travel back to them, and in a game that's all about beating the clock: that can be seen as a fatal flaw. Despite these fairly minor complaints though, I kept coming back for more. Obviously Dr. Robotnik plays a lot slower than his hedgehog rival but I always felt a sense of urgency to go faster and faster to get a better score, which really helped it feel like a tried and true frenetically-paced Sonic game. Whether you're a casual Sonic fan like myself who just happened to stumble across this game by accident while looking for a new Sonic title other than Mania that isn't completely awful, or a cringey fur-obsessed hardcore fan; I couldn't recommend this title enough for people who are looking for a unique, fun experience set in the Sonic world. If only SEGA took this much effort to create an original concept set in a 2D game. Actually, no. They'd probably just give us some tedious gem hunting or fishing game. 8/10

It's not often I turn hacks into cartridges, but this one deserves it. The only issue is that on real hardware, running out of time on a bridge causes a bus error because Robotnik will fall through for some reason and hit the kill plane. Hardly a reason not to play it on a real genesis though. The save feature even works if you've got SRAM!
