I'm gonna try to keep a positive attitude but first impressions are not good lmao. That tutorial has so many layers it feels like a parody or some sort of social experiment, couple that with forced color unlocks (lol cmon now) and forced grandprix and it's just all super clunky. Anybody could jump in and play srbk, but I don't stand a chance at convincing any of my not-already-autistic-about-sonic friends to hop in to Ring Racers.

@@mechadeka I'd say this is more an "insular modding team that doesn't get reality checks from outside the community" thing. They spent years in near-total radio silence, and I'd wager they didn't reach out far for feedback on all this stuff they wanted to put in. When you're making something you're invested in it can get easy to form tunnel vision and forget that you're making a game to be played by people that aren't you - see Cube World's recent release. But of course I'm just a layman. I'm sure there's plenty of good underneath it all - it'll just take work and considering feedback to make it right.

Shame that people are so split on this game. Coming here to say that I'm currently enjoying every second of it! Just finished playing the tracks on easy and I'm so excited to keep playing to slowly unlock the full achievement board! Love the presentation so much, I hope someone puts a full soundtrack playlist someday! Also, currently on time trials, I wish there was a tutorial that unlocked with the more complex mechanisms the CPU is using. Otherwise, I love the uniqueness of this game, one of the most complex kart racers I ever had the pleasure to play and I hope to keep improving at it! Thank you so much for this game ❤

I literally had the most fun right now, doing the tutorial and winning a grand prix. I am so happy, and did not even know that I wanted or needed this game in my life. It filled a nostalgia for sonic and by design its retro feel and just amazing dialogue and interesting item pick ups. the mechanics to drift and boost. Its like.. one of the best fan games ever.

It´s the first time I see this fan game, and after contemplating every detail you´ve put in it I feel such sensation of joy that is almost undiscriptable. The amalgamation of the 90´s vibes, the maps, the musics and the secret characters such as Mecha Sonic/Ecco/Dynamite is so good that generated within me a satisfaction never felt before. i like the game but i can definitely understand why many people are put off by it. biggest offender is the tutorial being as long as it is. The tutorial is being told to the players like theres some story mode to go with the game. they couldve just gotten straight to the point with the new stuff no one would know about yet and then get right to it. the next offender was how EVERYTHING was locked behind progression. Tracks and Characters make sense but colors and online mode? Yikes, to get the rights to play online you have to either skip the long ass tutorial by beating cpus in a race (ai used to be much harder) OR being forced to stick with the tutorial and THEN play grand prix and place 3rd or better in the ring cup. As a game its nice but they took a casual friendly genre (kart racing) and made it not casual lol.

I still really like SRB2Kart, but Ring Racers is a much more complete game, it's more like a racing game because we now got a proper grandprix mode that has a lot of new awesome and memorable tracks, and some excellent remakes of srb2 kart levels, lots of unlockable characters, etc. Battle mode is cool and i really liked the new special stages even though they are very difficult, and That's a lot of content for a game made for free. I do like the simplicity of srb2 kart but there was something missing about it y'know, the vanilla experience was very lacking, only a time attack mode, with 5 character's, though it had a decent amount of tracks, but then again it was missing something, more detail. I do love some of the new mechanics of ring racers such as the ring system, new itens, choose which item you want, spin dash, fast fall bounce, even the trick system. The game's Graphics and Art direction is amazing, it's like a mix between Sonic 3 and Sonic Mania, It's also different and unique in relation to many Racing games. The bad parts of the game were: The tutorial that didn't explain in more depth about several other very important mechanics like sliptide/wavedash, it didn't talk much about the game's items and what each one can do, and it can be a little confusing. After 14 cups and 14 special stages and many levels i was hoping for a better ending, I don't know, some reward for getting all the emeralds, like a super sonic or something. The game's bots are very unfair, they always receive the best items and it's shocking sometimes when you're doing well on the last lap, the bot ends up using a super powerful item and you end up falling far behind in 8th place which is shocking. These errors aside, you can still have a lot of fun with this game, if you can, play it, it has a vast list of more than 230 racing tracks and battle arenas. Many modes like Time Attack, Match Race, SPB chase mode, etc. There's a lot of good content waiting for you in Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers. 8.8/10 [A] RANK Congratulations to the Developers for making a game as incredible, innovative and fun as this one. 🎉🎉🎉👏👏👏

It’s like the presentation is great, but it also feels like the devs got a little too cute in how long it goes on for not just with the dialogue during the setup, but with the tutorial itself. It felt like it would never end! The tutorial also make the game feel incredibly bloated with its mechanics. Like it’s just too much for a kart racer. They are supposed to be pick up and play, and SRB2Kart had a good balance between that and a high skill ceiling. And first impression here is that they focused too much on the high skill ceiling, and forgot that ease of pick up was what allowed the last game to be so popular (and the genre as a whole).

It was actually skippable the entire time, but it was very very VERY hard to notice and it was originally very hard to skip since the challenge proposed to you had very hard CPU's. With the new update, they added text boxes indicating you can now *go backwards at the start of any part of the tutorial to access the trial race*, and made the CPUs easier. If we only knew about that earlier...

I'm sorry, as someone who absolutely loved SRB2Kart, I feel like Ring Racers is trying to be different for the sake of being different. That can be a good thing, but at the same time, there's nothing wrong with a good old Mario Kart clone.

The rebrand was a good idea since there are so many gameplay differences compared to SRB2Kart. First impressions however, it’s definitely way more Sonic-like, but the gameplay changes are gonna make this way more difficult for people to jump into and just play. I cannot recommend this to people like I do with Sonic Kart. Way too many hurdles to not only play the game normally, but to play online as well. So I can’t tell my friends “Here’s the game, here’s the character and map packs, here’s the IP/Discord invite, let’s play.” The ease of getting someone into this doesn’t seem to exist for Ring Riders, and that disappoints me.

I found this randomly and wow. After playing it I am absolutely floored at the quality and polish. This seriously feels like it could be a Sonic Mania situation. Deserves to get taken up by SEGA in the same way. Amazing work!!

I appreciate the amount of effort that was clearly put into this game, and for trying to stand out with the mechanics, but everything doesn't really come together to make a fun kart racer. The ring spending mechanic just seems like a worse version of Mario Kart's coins, or TSR's rings. Nobody wants to spend rings during a race to build speed, especially when having rings makes getting hit less punishing. It also means that if you already have an item, and you want to spend rings to build up speed getting up a slope or something, you need to throw away your item first. It's very clunky. Just have it where collecting rings slowly builds up your top speed/acceleration, and from there either go the Mario Kart route and make the amount of rings you can collect limited, or go the TSR route and have no limit. The insta-whip is a very silly name considering it's an attack you need to charge first. Maybe make it weaker, but come out as soon as you hit the button, or make it where tapping it does a weak hit, but charging it makes it strong. Either that, or just remove it, it feels a bit unnecessary. No complaints about the spindash, but the fast drop or whatever it's called is a bit annoying, considering you can't see right below you. The trick system is ass. Why is the recommended direction shown on signs that can very easily be missed or obscured, and not just displayed on the UI? There's probably a lot more I'm forgetting, since this game is loaded with way too many mechanics to remember. The tutorial needs to be drastically shortened. A kart racer should not have a 30-60 minute long, unskippable tutorial. Custom colors, online play, and add-ons being locked behind gameplay is also incredibly dumb. SRB2K was popular because it was easy to pick up and play, while also having enough depth to keep people hooked. It had it's own problems (item knockback being the big one for me), but it was overall a very solid and fun kart racer. DRRR feels like it was designed not understanding any of that, and it's a damn shame, because there was clearly a lot of love put into this game. The presentation is phenomenal, but the bloated mechanics and stupid decisions drag the whole experience down.

That is a really really good summary of all the problems and has to be upvoted so hard, that the Devs see this! As a really big Sonic fan Iam so sad that I had to put this game aside but the first 5min of main-menu-tutorial (do you really need to explain basic "Sound-Options" and "Graphics-Options" to your players? do you think we are soooo dumb???) and the next 10min of ingame-tutorial sucked all the fun out of the game. Not to mention, that I wasnt even halfway done with the tutorials... I also would like to mention that the game sometimes looks really bad... I know its the Robo Blast 2 Engine but thats not the problem, because it looks a bit like Mario Kart SNES and I love that game. The problem are the really really bad ingame color choices and WAY too much details. Why is the tutorial placed in RGB-hell instead of a simple black void where you can explain all the mechanics without sensory-overload??

I like how rings work a lot. A reservoir of extra speed that you can keep for when you feel you need it, or spend it like crazy when you know you're about to hit a section where you can replenish rings. It using the same button as items does feel clunky, but it's also a risk and reward mechanic that gives depth to the gameplay. What do you want the most, the item, or access to rings? "Having rings makes getting hit less punishing" there is no difference between having 1 ring or 20 rings as far as I can tell. I like to keep at least 5 or so rings in reserve for if I spin our and need a lil' boost but yeah no rings are not a rare precious resource. I agree about the instawhip. I call the purpose of its existence into question. If it's gonna stay as it is, they should change the name so it doesn't have insta lol. I think the trick system is cool and works pretty well. Though it IS hard to learn and beginner unfriendly. Maybe if you could turn in the air to choose where you're facing a bit before doing the trick... I like the smash bros brawl style achievements system a lot. Though the tutorial being unskippable (it is actually possible to skip it but it's not evident to new players, I only recently learned about it) and online being locked do hurt the experience for people who just wanna pick it up and play with friends... At least there's cheat codes to unlock those, but, yeah...

Ok having taken a break and completed the tutorial (which was a little annoying, but whatevs I played SRB2K, so it wasn't that difficult either, just long.) Lemme hive my honest cents to this game. This game has phenomenal potential, I can see myself playing this game in the future, IF certain things get addressed. Let me begin with the things I LIKE about the game's added features. FastFall: I like this. Maybe others don't, but I do enjoy having the option to not be flung in the air and wait an eternity. Though I will say bind it to a more "natural" command. I'd like to press drift, brake or accelerate + down to fastfall. Just something more intuitive that exists on a more important button on my controller. Rainbow drifts: ok I'm with it. I'm a driftaholic, so that compliments the way I play the game. You can definitely have fun with new drift boosting mechanics and I give this a green light. Spindash: this is cool, just I rather it be like a 2 button combination rather than have it be it's own button. Have it be accelerate and brake. Simple. Less buttons = more friendly to players. Ok now that I stated what I liked... Here's the stuff I'm not pleased with.. Rings: Just don't... We already can barely process the game as it is lmao we got ADHD, don't make us micromanage more stuff, we just wanna race! Trick system: gut this thing. Throw it out. It causes somany more problems than it can ever hope to fix. If you approach bumpers at an angle you can just input a trick in the direction that sends you to your doom. This is not what you want. Locking of certain things: look i get it. You want ppl to play the content you worked hard on and i appreciate this, but this needs to be done right. How do you think ppl are gonna play this game? WORD OF MOUTH. The players who love this have to be able to reccomend this to normies lol and I don't know a single normie who is gonna sit through that tutorial and absorb all that info without a headache and just not wanting to see the game ever again. Make a story mode or something, so that when new players jump in and play online instantly and like the game, they can then dump hours playing that mode and BOOM happy gamers. Overall control of kart: idk what it is, but something about the controls feel very off compared to SRB2K. Like a wise AVGN once said, I'm either going slow as sh!t or fast as @$$. I just can't really tell what my speed is going to be, and I can't concentrate on it because I'm busy micromanaging my ring count and other things, but I cant focus on those things cuz I'm driving, and I cant drive cuz of frikkin obstacles, and i cant solve those obstacles immediately cuz I'm being driven crazy. Overall i think the game has promise, but it's just got toomuch going on. The item button has multiple functions, we now have an action and spin dash button as well, its overwhelming. Please just reduce the amount of buttons needed and make new mechanics more intuitive by slapping them into more instinctual button presses/combinations. I hope this gives some insight to the devs, cuz this game has sick content. Would love to see this game have a story mode or something. I'd definitely play that to unlock stuff!

I was recommended this but. No joke, but this honestly has to be the worst kart game I've ever played. This game plays like a literal Croc platformer for its tutorial that does nothing to sell how the game is supposed to play, on top of too many mechanics that feels clunky to play. Kart racers aren't meant to have 8 buttons in order to drive a car, in comparison to Mario Kart and Crash Team Racing which are easy to pick up but comes with a high skill mastery. Did any of them even learn anything about game design? And the worst of all, there's such horrible amount of visual clutter that makes it really hard to see what's going on in comparison to other kart racers. There's no thought put into its colour theory and as well any of the visual principles. It's almost like as if it was designed from a kid who did everything on the basis of looking cool with no consideration to how it actually functions. I'm actually looking forward to Sonic Drift 16 bit for how much more competently put together than this now.

Been playing this game for a couple of weeks now and I just wanted to shout out how amazing it is. This is, in my opinion, leagues better than other Sonic racing games and a huge step up from SRB2 Kart thanks to the new mechanics, local splitscreen, and single player content. And it’s never boring thanks to decent mods coming out almost daily. I know a lot of people hate on this game for being too complicated and chaotic, which I can understand if trying to play through the grand prix and unlock everything legitimately, but for casual playing and playing online it’s a blast and a fun challenge for people like myself who have mastered the more traditionally laid-back games in the kart racing genera like Mario Kart or Sonic & All Stars Racing

Ok, so it's like 4:30AM for me now, and I saw this video just before I planned to go to sleep... but of course I still insta-downloaded the game and gave it a shot. That being said, I've only had the opportunity to complete the tutorial and one race so far (the tutorial is very long, but don't worry, they don't make it boring). That being said, this already blew me away, and I didn't even know about this game beforehand. I literally just randomly got recommended this video. Honestly did a bit of a double take when I realised it's only been up for like an hour! 😅 --- only nitpicks so far: If you rebind any buttons, which you're encouraged to do before starting the tutorial, the buttons in the tutorial will still be the default which messed with my head once or twice when it would tell me the wrong buttons to break. Speaking of binds, there's one or two buttons I find questionable, but you can fix that with binds. Only thing you can't fix that way is very specific stuff like the fact I prefer to use B to break instead of X, but I can't bind break to B because holding break and accelerate is needed for some button combos, and it's a lot harder to hold A and B simultaneously while steering than A and X. Sounds small, but it just nags me 'cause now I keep accidentally hitting the look backwards button instead of the break button when I'm about to crash. The other nitpick is that while it was fun, I thought the drifting section where you had to outrun the bomb was a huge difficulty spike for me that I was stuck on for a good while - not even for the tight turns or underwater section, I actually first-tried those parts. It was just getting past the first 3 or so turns that took me like 50 tries because the track goes so straight for so long it's hard to get speed boosts from drifting to outrun the bomb without launching yourself into walls. --- Visually, this is a work of art. Honestly don't know if I've seen a game nail this style before so hard. Controls-wise, aside from aforementioned binding nitpicks, it feels great! Gameplay-wise, maybe a bit early for me to say having seen only the start, but I'm absolutely sold so far and looking forward to play more when I have the time. I really hope the online play for this game kicks off, because despite not typically being the kinda guy to be super into racing games, I feel like this could really have some staying power if the online's nice and active.

@@HazeX2 the game is not very well made, online is locked behind a 30-40 minute tutorial, as are most of the characters and even the colours. way too much mechanic bloat, tracks have a colour pallete that is too complex making hazards and items on the road impossible to see. physics dont work, you will try to land on a half pipe and you will bounce on the slanted portion directly vertically instead of sliding down it. there are 3-4 items per item row in 16 player lobbies. in their discord that has had people posting hundreds of messages everyday for the past 5 years in anticipation, 3 hours after launch there were 3 people in the public voice chat playing. one of the devs is on twitch now and 20 minutes ago he was crying and saying they will unlock everything for players in the next few weeks from the backlash (while pretending they were always planning to do that, how many games do you know that patch out the tutorial and unlocks and announce that after a few hours). Charyb telling people to cry about it in the discord. its just a trainwreck from start to finish lol

@@dairychoco5603I dunno if they planned to patch out the tutorial, but I could buy them planning to make an ”all unlock” available after a couple of weeks, since the game has a cheat code system in the menus. When I saw the cheat menu I figured they wanted to give an old school experience of people playing and unlocking stuff as they go, like old kart racing games. And then once people have had a chance to unlock stuff by playing for a while, they release codes that allow the community to bypass that and to foster the online community. And imo, that’s not a bad idea for a game in general, just maybe not for a sequel to a game the fanbase mainly liked for their ability to play online and mod. It becomes a matter of not meeting expectations set by their previous work. And though I appreciate the production value of the tutorial, it does feel a little too self indulgent in its pacing and length. And I kinda feel that if you need a tutorial for your kart game, the genre famous for being pick up and play (as was their last game), you might have added too many mandatory mechanics required of the player. “Mandatory” being the key word, as the last game had some mechanical depth as well, but they were high level mechanics and more elegantly designed, in that you didn’t need to understand them to play the game; it was something you could explore and learn over time if you wanted to. Low skill floor, high skill ceiling.

Please add an option to skip the tutorial. It is extremely long, doesn’t teach you anything that you can’t learn on your own through experimentation, and the part with the “self-propelled bomb” punishing you for not drifting perfectly is especially galling. This seems like a really great game, but I’m probably not going to pick it back up unless you guys let me skip the overlong tutorial and let me play the actual game.

Im writing this to warn anyone seeing this video cause these is no “real” reviews yet… As much as I want to love this game like I loved Kart the over complication of mechanics and all the useless crap added just put so much bad taste in my mouth in span of playtime since release I sadly have to say that if anyone will ask me if it’s worth playing I will say “no, just go play SRB2Kart”

@@lucylu3342 Nope, but it happens less and less with practice. Once I figured out how to use the e-break I could correct my turns until I learned to anticipate them. Also, if you're in a panel/powerup boost state, you can just tap the drift button to do an immediate hair pin turn. The learning curve is STEAP, but it's very satisfying. I'm through about 24 of the 28 cups of which some of them took me multiple attempts. But like a lot of fighting games, the courses (opponents) had individual lessons they were trying to teach me and with time I'm able to acquire them. I can see this is certainly not for everyone especially those wanting something close to Mario Kart. For anyone who likes playing old Sega arcade racers like Super Hang On, Daytona, and Initial D, e-breaking and knowing when to let off acceleration is very satisfying.

As of this comment, the game has seen an update. The tutorial now has MULTIPLE opt out points. The AI has been rebalanced to be a bit less rubberband-y, Online and Addons unlock very early at the same time. The game's folder has a PASSWORDS txt file with all the cheatcodes that unlock a vast majority of the game's content and all modes with no strings attached.

Stopped playing the game for tonight. Easily my all time FAVEORITE kart racer, and it doesn’t even feel like a standard one either! Its way more akin to an obstacle course in some of these stages, and I think thats what makes this game stand out from the very safe kart racers like Mario Kart. It’s like you put Sonic characters in go-karts and plopped them into Sonic stages and said “Yeah go race, I guess. Also watch out for the obstacles or whatever.” The 5 year wait and long absence of information was 100% worth it and I’m so excited to play more tomorrow. Thank you, Kart Krew, for an amazing game.
