“I think his work is remarkable.”
Dr Shirley Sherwood Presents: ‘Nymphaea rudgeana’ by Gustavo Surlo.
This stunning piece of work is by 2018 Margaret Mee Scholar, Gustavo Surlo. Having started painting at just 6 years old, he's been by far the youngest scholar at Kew. Since then, he's dedicated his body of work to helping in the preservation of endangered species.
Gustavo's done a superb job at capturing the Nymphaea rudgeana, a waterlily species native to Mexico and Tropical America. As noted by Dr Sherwood here, it contains all the components of the plant: the leaves, seedling, fruit, roots and white flower. They come together in a delicate composition full of meticulous detail and gentle hues of purple and green.
See this piece at the Wonderful World of Water Plants at Kew Gardens, where you’ll also get to see Gustavo’s spectacular ‘Pachira Aquatica’, ‘Victoria Amazonica’ and ‘Pygmy Rwandan Waterlily’. You don’t want to miss them.
