Rory McEwen produced some staggering botanical artworks during his lifetime. Magnifying and drawing attention to the small and insignificant, it was his leaf paintings in particular which proved revolutionary. Not only did his use of blank space put a contemporary spin on botanical art, but the masterpieces he left us with are some of the most detailed paintings in the botanical art world with wonderful precision and clarity of colour.
Dr Shirley talks us through ‘Upper Club, Eton 1979’ along with the botanical influences at the time she started collecting, and an exciting new 2023 touring exhibition, ‘Rory McEwen: New Perspectives On Nature’. This travelling exhibition will start at The Museum of Fine Arts, St Petersburg, Florida and is definitely one to keep an eye on.
