The full moon affects the fish biting. Deer move more in the middle of the day during the full moon than any other time. Fish bite better on the increase than decrease. Deer activity goes along the same pattern. Barometric pressure trumps the moon though.
@jackcampbell23072 жыл бұрын
I see less deer movement on a full moon although when I do see the deer it's usually midday 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
@paulwakefield1015 Жыл бұрын
agreed jack. have you also noticed that the bucks seem to get back to their bed earlier than normal on full mood days?
@jackcampbell23072 жыл бұрын
Make no mistake a full moon does suppress daytime movement because it's usually once at midday instead of a.m. and p.m. on quarter moons

Here is something that I've learned during full moon situations - fish feed less at night and deer, especially big bucks, do not move as much at night. My observations come from years of fishing at night and many years driving the fields at night, on a ranch my wife and I used to caretake, and not seeing as as many deer during full moon nights virus dark nights. I have also noticed, contrary to what many duck and goose hunters believe, that both ducks and geese prefer to feed in fields on dark nights as compared to full moon nights. Many years ago I was tired of reading and getting into arguments with my brother about how wildlife and fish were affected by a full moon that I took it upon myself to try and answer these statements for myself. Just because humans can see at night better with a full moon we assume that wildlife and fish can too. Nothing can be further from the truth. Wildlife and fish become very shy at night when there is a full moon, in fact they flat don't don't like it thus the reason of depressed movement. I've killed my biggest bucks during full moon periods and have caught my largest trout, at night, during the darkest conditions. If you believe everything you read you might be sitting on the couch too much.

The short hair guy comes off way too condescending, that's probably a big reason people don't want to change their thoughts on the moon, belittling the uninformed isn't a good way to present the data/findings.

Not trying to belittle the uninformed as much as we see so much garbage pushed that is completely baseless in research

There have been controlled studies that show moon phases have influence as well. Yes, the rut is the same duration and time frame every year. But the peaks and valleys of the rut change with solar and weather. I do follow the charles Alsheimer rut phases theory, synchronized rut, classic rut, and trickle rut. Personally I kill big bucks every year and dont shoot any under 8pt and 3 years old. Regardless of the moon phasing im trying to hunt all cold and wet days from late October to early December. Give me a northern cold front the second week in November and "dats money dude"...

First of all, doing studies on collared deer in pens produce guaranteed results for the research you're doing, regardless if that study is at Mississippi State or Penn State!!! Proof of that is all these Private Hunting Farms and Ranches all over the country, where the environmental conditions that can be controlled, ARE Controlled, and the deer move and act accordingly!!! Try doing the research in a Free-Range Setting across the country without food plots or bait piles, by placing numerous cell cameras to gather data, and match that data to the Lunar Phases, Current Weather Conditions and Time of Year. Deer move when they are: Hungry, Horney, Thirsty, need protection from extreme weather conditions, or are DISTURBED by predators or humans... FACTS!!!
@rayadamsjr237011 ай бұрын
All the deer in that study were wild deer that were trapped or tranquilized collared and released back into the wild. Strickland talks about this study more in debt on his deer university podcast.

I am knew to the “moon guide” but like you said I am trying anything that would help me kill a big deer or better understand them. so I have been researching most the summer/early season about the moon! I don’t think the argument is (moon phase = deer move farther in a day) we all know the rut does the best for that! I believe what people want to see is (does moon phase = a more patterned deer) Or does (certain moon phases = where a buck will most likely bed, eat, or be traveling to) Being able to use an educated guess to where he will be is how you kill the big boys not only how much they move! I have a cell camera on public land and I have gotten 3 pics of the same buck but he has only been in front of that camera during a waning gibbous each time and weeks apart. The camera is right next to his bedroom so the question I have is does the moon influence (where he will be eating or where he will be bedding) I will continue this year looking into it but I would be interested to watch 50 collared bucks and see if they bed or eat in the same place depending upon the moon at all? Thanks and good luck this year

Yes, but WHERE are they on the landscape when “they’re moving the same amount” each day under a “bright-moon phase” vs “dark”??? ...in bedding areas/cover/sanctuary or “near” or in transition zones or feeding areas??? Would love to explore THAT side of the question...

I personally don’t think the focus should be on “how much more they move during legal shooting light” it may not be a dramatical difference, but rather “how much earlier are they leaving bedding areas or how much later are they getting back to bedding areas than usual during a certain moon phase”

Go check out Penn State Deer-Forest Study and it will show movement all over the place for all age class and sex of deer. Also shows what hunting pressure does to the travel patterns. Everything talked about here is supported by those studies.

Is the moon phase the same thing as the feed and movement times some people swear by? Where it says best movement is between 9am and 2 pm. I guess it's a deer movement chart but i'm not sure if that chart is based off moon phases or the tide movement or whatever.
@HUNTRPOD2 жыл бұрын
Yea same thing. Two different theories, one based strictly on movement usually in regards to the moon overhead or underfoot. The other moon phases as it relates to breeding and peak rut activity

The timing of the rut is triggered by the shorting of the daylight hours, we have known that since you guys were pups, the moon phase i believe can and will intensify or disrupt the rutting conditions. The problem is that you whitetail guru's can't predict the rut at all. So the purpose of the podcast is to convince everybody that our own theories are wrong. Adam Hay's Red Moon Theory is working and he has the data and the bucks to back it up, and also many others have followed suit..........

Who ever said they move more on the night of the rutting moon? The rutting moon seems to be the trigger , and they really seem to ramp up seeking/chasing 5-10 days after the full moon, when it’s waning.

@muleskinner485 Жыл бұрын
I hear way too many ( I thinks ) in this video for me too agree to this BS, way too much data has been collected on 200 inch bucks killed in the past 30 years for me to ignore .I know moon phases, barometric pressure, the length of daylight hours, and cold fronts all affect deer movement, plus hunting pressure. When you collect data on an area that is not public ground you have a whole different scenario ,then you have different buck -doe ratios in some states, going on this video a hunter needs to be in the stand 24-7, go figure
