Don’t have to believe me, my portion of Wisconsin, a contributor to the loss of those big deer you speak of was going from shotgun to rifle. The other thing no one will acknowledge is KZbin. A certain popular channel ranting and raving a big deer is a 130 class buck especially on public land. Everyone sees that’s 130, 3.5 year old and assumes that’s a big deer. The deer population in general though is declining in general is because of agricultural practices. Every god damn farmer out there is taking away habitat. Every fence line or brushed up wood line is cleared up. Every crop field is sprayed with chemicals so there’s no native forage, every field is picked clean, there’s no 1986 JD combine dropping cobs everywhere. I could keep going but it’s culmination of a lot of things and no one will listen.

Outlaw cameras and a huge number of hunters will quit, then you will see a serge. Like you just said it’s so damn easy anyone can find the deer now a days, you still have to hunt them right but the challenge of locating deer is simple.

Never in my life have I heard a less informed, more disjointed, ignorant perspective regarding "big bucks." No offense intended, but these are very young hunters that will change their views with more years and MUCH more experience.

At the hunting club I go to they have to be 4.5 year olds to shoot and sometimes there is slip ups but probably 90-95 percent of the bucks killed there are 4.5 years or older

Average deer in WI harvest is 1.5 years old, its bad. most gun seasons you will be lucky to even see a buck.

Man, this is depressing to listen to as a Louisiana resident. Our wildlife department doesn't do anything. They raised the crap out of our licenses and gave themselves raises and more vacation.

To many hunters these days , drives me nuts people harvesting young bucks , damn thing hasn’t even had a chance to live a bit of life , and for the people saying they just hunt for meat …u get a lot more meat off a mature buck

Funny, I'm sittin here e-scouting for potential permission spots in East Texas and public spots around my new home base for next year while listening to this podcast. OnX and cameras have changed the game entirely. Sure you gotta put the hikes in to verify, but it's a completely different world than 10-15 years ago. And I am super interested to see what Texas Parks and Wildlife biologist reports say about deer population numbers on public after the perfect storm of 2020, crossbows and other gadgetry and hunting influencers.

Many of the best deer hunters ever have been held to an impossible standard by the jealous . Then they are vilified for not playing accuser's game.The real crime here is no proof after all the attention from DNR and a swarm of public scrutiny ,mitch and his trophy have been disrespected.

Culling in an effort to change genetics doesn't't work in pins much less on free range deer. That dude's from Texas. He should know that. I agree completely with the high grading argument though. That's said, width restrictions are much better than point restrictions.

80% of the deer we kill in my county in the south are 3.5 years old or older. The flip side of this is that those deer are basket rack 8 pointers. It takes deer TWICE as long to get big in the south in my area. A deer isn't a real shooter until 6.5 years old.

Hate to say this but it has a lot to do with the DNR on what they do for the state and how many deer are allowed to be taken out in a state. Some states manage the herds and some don’t give a shit. A 21/2 or 31/2 is king in some states and a monster is that very few 41/2s, your only as good as your land is
@russbrasel50112 сағат бұрын
No way that is true. Maybe on the management draw hunts where they have to check them in. Other than that I’d say it’s like 10-20% if that😅
@heathalford472111 сағат бұрын
I hunt the LCP region if I’m not mistaken. A lot of the bucks will likely be close to 3 before he is legal antler wise based off of studies I’ve read about
@star-b-qpodcast5412 сағат бұрын
How do they know for sure? Every Mississippian in the comments for this episode said they’re on an honor system. This is either “80%”factual or “80%” fake news.
@heathalford472111 сағат бұрын
I would just guess that’s based off the hunting clubs and public land that turn in reports of harvest and in my part of the state from one study they did at MSU the deer are prolly 3 before they meet the minimum antler restrictions. But not every one follows that or reports the harvest
@HUNTRPOD8 сағат бұрын
Based on Dmap data which is about 1 million acres
@star-b-qpodcast547 сағат бұрын
data that is based on the honor system? That’s called empirical data. Just not sure that qualifies as a reliable data set to be boasting about, when in reality it could be that the majority of bucks harvested are 3.5 and younger like in most states, but the well-meaning hunter is usually not going to UNDERestimate the age of their harvest; we’re notorious for adding inches and years to our bucks in every state in the union. That’s why I say it could be super accurate or miles off the mark. Same can happen with a tag system, why would it be MORE reliable on the honor system?
@Ben_Allgood13 сағат бұрын
Age data given was for private lands people who are enrolled in a program to manage deer. Of course that data set is going to show an older age being killed.
@xivkong914313 сағат бұрын
Minnesota took out their APR(antler point restriction) and optd for cwd hunting and contol the "spread" which is BS imo. It doesnt surpirse me that in other parts of the US especially in the midwest and NE that the avg age class of bucks killed are 1.5-2 year olds if they are doing the same thing. The "interest" to manage deer is if you're not killing it even if its a 2 year old or 3, i can promise you someone else shooting that deer.
@mikel.488513 сағат бұрын
Virginia is a hidden gem for big bucks even though we run dogs here many clubs have buck rules and participate in the dmap program which let's us harvest more doe

@Ben_Allgood14 сағат бұрын
That's data from DMAP. DMAP cooperators are trying to shoot older deer. I don't believe northern states do DMAP like the south does. That's why you see southern data showing older age bucks. They're only looking at the people trying to shoot older deer.

I don’t know how they know 80% of our buck harvest is 3 year olds and older when don’t have tags or mandatory reporting on private land. The bag limit is literally on the honor system.

PGC could take some notes; buy more land to incorporate into the game lands system, select areas to have limited hunting for older class of deer, work with landowners with doe harvests. PA is doing things better than most, but there are always adjustments that can be made to improve. Keep having the conversations guys, educating people will only help everyone!

As a native Texan that’s been in Mississippi for about 8 years. I get more fulfillment from public land hunting than I ever did on a lease in Texas. The Midwest can say what they want but I’m telling yall, Mississippians are shooters and some of the best hunters I’ve been around. Mississippi fails in many categories BUT the outdoors? They do it right
@lukuswagner9652Күн бұрын
You buy a thousand or so acres and hunt the core. You don't need a fence. The pro hunters act like it's free range but if your hunting a large property that has food plots,cover and enough buffer from the public your essentially on your own preserve. The pro teams have been doing it for years. It's not fenced in but no one is getting close to your bucks and they deer have every reason to stay on your property.
