Plant and animal proteins are compared head-to-head by Dr. T. Colin Campbell, the author of The China Study. He rates the quality of the two protein sources for your health and explains why you can obtain complete protein without meat.
Dr. Campbell educates us on protein isolates found in processed foods and why they can be a “mixed bag” for your health. Plus, he discusses why he ranks proper nutrition ahead of exercise as the most critical step to prevent cancer when he joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room Podcast.

@Dookie Bookie It doesn't compare to real meat, the food companies are the only ones profiting. They can sell you a much cheaper product, much less nutritious, and make the same amount of money. It's all about their profit, not your health. Look at the people who eat the most plant foods, it is the poor. Look at the foods most Americans eat, it is mostly plant based. They go to a fast food place. even if they order a real hamburger and a large fry, they get a little, thin patty of meat, and the rest is plant based, including the fries, cooked in vegetable oils.

@Dookie Bookie Okay, whatever you say, but I am going to continue to eat my meat and eggs, because that is what reversed my metabolic disease and diabetes. It is not a moral issue with me, it is about feeling good and functioning my best in life. I can't do it your way, I already tried it. You want to eat plant foods, you can eat my share too.

My late dad smoked most his life (passed away at 88) since he was 13, had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, rarely watched his diet (loved fatty steaks) and always added more salt in his food. Could be his good genes but he always lived by this rule: eat until 80% full. He was always slim, never overweight his entire life and stayed active especially outdoors which he loved nature and gardening. Since he got his daily Vit D from the sun, he didn’t have osteoporosis, which both my grandmother and mom had.

Yeah the China Study was biased from the beginning. It turns out that districts in China that ate meat were overlooked for more plant eating ones and then they showed the health markers of those districts. Turns out the health of the high meat eating districts had the same outcomes. Eating more plants made no difference in their health. It would be like quoting tobacco industry scientists to tell us cigarettes don't cause cancer.

One of my uncles smoked UNFILTERED Lucky Strike cigarettes for his entire life. He died at age 93 and only about a year before I got to see him ballroom dancing. And he was not stationery. He was clearly "leading" and moving around the dance floor - negotiating the traffic. He died from smoke inhalation but not from cigarettes but in a electrical-short-started fire that he clearly tried to put out (being an engineer). The key is that he was smoking UNFILTERED cigarettes. The way mankind had smoked tobacco for the milennia. I am NOT encouraging anyone to smoke. I have never smoked. Filtered-vs-unfiltered- may help explain why some people have still lived long lives while smoking. God Bless T Colin Campbell - still offering his wisdom so many years later. I read his "China Study" book LONG ago and boy did my eyes open wide. For other viewers, it is important to note that what Campbell is saying is basically what Dr.Walter Kempner was saying back in the 1940's and afterward. He was curing just about everything from cancer to obesity to diabetes to hypertension - in Durham, NC. A book on his life, written by one of his MD associates (of many years) says that Kempner based his treatment on believing that the liver and kidneys were being taxed greatly by excess protein from all sources. And this lead to damage, inflammation and the onset of illness. He was curing people with what was called the "rice diet". He chose rice for starch - instead of potatoes because rice was more ubiquitous worldwidethan potatoes. People traveled from all over the world. Of note was that he always focused on the worst cases and let his associates handle the rest. He was focused on saving lives and learning more and more. Some of his HBP patients would have HBP measurements of 300+ over 200+.

My remaining 2 questions: Seeking answers! While I want to recommend "all-plant diets" 'with confidence, I have a couple lingering doubts re. iron and EPA... (read on ... for my 2 questions): 1. many individuals who feel depleted seem to regain energy with a steak, maybe once a month. I observe these are [people with a collection of genetic markers associated with the type O blood type.] -- Could it be that there is some form of iron that comes from red meat that is needed for these individuals, who lack some enzyme perhaps unable to harvest the iron in dark greens? Should these type O's eat meat, not as a macronutrient food, but as a seasonal medicine, e.g. in the WINTER have one steak per month? I would so much love an answer to this lingering doubt I have. 2. Another nagging question I have is that some people (perhaps also type O's) are found to have SNPs that prevent them from being able to convert plant omegas to the needed EPA omega 3. Therefore they may have neurological issues (MS, depression, etc) Comment?

Can someone please direct me to a source that defends plant proteins are absorbed just as well as animal proteins? My husband strongly argues we need animal protein because plant protein goes through our system too fast. I’ve done the wfpb kickstart twice so far, but stopped when my lab work came back anemic. It could be due to other factors. I also have severe GERD and food allergies that limit my diet. Thanks for any advice or direction. 😊

What does " goes through our systen too fast " mean? I thought proteins were broken down into amino acids that our body uses to replace ect . I'm not sure where speed comes in.

Then I came to some sensible conclusions after some investigation. One was that I wasn't going to be an Arnold Swazenegger and two was that I could get plenty of protein in plants for what I was doing. It helped my to transistion completly plant based.

Why isn’t a protein just a protein regardless of the source. In other words, why is animal versus plant protein unhealthy? I have read the China Study and don’t dispute the observations and conclusions. However, what causes the health differences? Is it the fat etc. in meat or the fiber or other good stuff in plants. Or is it the abundance of particular amino acids, e.g. leucine and its association with cancer growth? I wish Chuck had asked this question.

Just as you said. Meat overloads us with amino acids, way more than we need. This in turn drives up IGF-1 which tells our body to grow and heal. But when you're done healing and growing....all that's left to grow are cancers and bloodvessels facilitating those cancers.

Missed opportunity. Everything rehearsed in this talk has already been stated countless times. The conversation would have been far more worthwhile and rewarding if had tracked the developments in the last two decades between opposing camps: different approaches to veganism, including fasting protocols, revisions/admissions in the established teaching of government and academic authorities, and the rising popularity of low carb and keto programmes (I can't imagine any low carb proponent being challenged by this interview). In other words, the history of ideas.

Folks say nutrition and health is complicated. The Garden of Eden with variety of plants are common as - seeds, fertile soil, water, sunlight and warm days and nights. Is this the reason Noah and Methuselah lived almost a thousand years. Yes, they hearkened to GOD like everyone else can serve. Can doctors and preachers be wrong? Unfortunately, there are no trials that compare the longevity and health of exclusively animal protein eaters and plant protein eaters. Without such evidence, everything is speculation based on one’s biases. Currently, the only study of exclusive animal protein eaters has shown remarkable health benefits. Time will tell if that translates to longer lives. I believe it will. By all means shun animal protein if you wish, but don’t denigrate it on the flimsy associations Campbell and other vegan ideologues cite and base their lifelong reputations on. To say animal protein is toxic ignores the 4 million years or so we have evolved consuming it. It’s just lunacy.
