I just wanted to say, thank you so, so much for this Dave. Being able to hear the difference in the adjustments and seeing exactly what to bend has helped me so much! I purchased a beautiful Gustave Becker wall clock recently and it’s been a real battle trying to keep the pendulum going, but following your video, I was able to level everything out and put the clock back in beat. I’m now watching it to adjust the speed. Thank you once again! From a grateful viewer over in the UK (greetings to you in Florida!) :) 😊

Thanks Dr. Time, I'm going to repair/replace the mainspring in a 1970's Hamilton mantle clock with Hermle 1050-020 triple chime and found this video interesting and valuable.

Very good video on setting a balanced ticking of the clock. I adjusted the rod on my 19th century Ingraham mantle clock. The ticking is now even and runs w/out stopping.

Got a question for you, if I wanted to find out if time is moving faster, what can I do to find out using a clock? Yeah I know, sounds insane. But if it was possible, what could I do you think? You’re the clock man!

You may be interested to know that I was given an old ogee clock by my grandfather about fifty years ago when I was a kid because he knew that I was fascinated by mechanical clocks. The movement in it is not original to the case. I believe the original one may have been wooden, and probably ceased functioning. The case has pullies in the upper corners, so originally the movement was weight-driven. It was replaced with a movement very similar to the one shown in this video at 4:35. It has always run reliably and reasonably accurately, never stops, etc., but I was always bothered by the pronounced limping quality of the tick tock. To get it to tick evenly, I would have to prop up one side with a shim, but then it looked obviously not level. So I watched this video, took the hands and face off, made the adjustment as demonstrated here, and got it right on the first try! Beginner's luck, I guess! I have a metronome app on my phone which has an analyzer feature which assesses and shows graphically the evenness of a beat, and this verified for me that the beat is in fact very even. It never occurred to me that this adjustment was so simple. I feel as though a great long-standing problem has been solved. Thank you!

My pendulum swings and stops after a few seconds less than a min. it's a hand me down an Ethan Allen vintage small wall clock I really like it but having issues. Not sure how to adjust or what to look for. I tried leveled on the ground and wall mounted same results. Help Dr Time.

Hi Dave, and thank you very much for your video. How do you know to which side you bend the crutch? I understand that the amount of bending is trial and error, but how do you know if you have to bend it to the right or to the left? In the last clock, to video don't show, but bending to the right means like doint this to the wire: > ?

I know your comment is old now, but I think you have to bend the middle of the rod in the opposite direction that you want the pendulum to swing more. At least, that’s what I wanted my clock to do and sorted just now. I needed the pendulum to swing more towards the right, so I pushed the middle of the rod at the back of the clock towards the left. Now it sounds even!

Thanks for the video. Very helpful! I have a brand new Hermle 451-050H movement that I need to get into beat (struggling with leveling the standing grandfather case but will get there). The chimes ring only off and on and seem to stop after only a few rings. It is oiled and greased. Any thoughts on this problem? Thanks so much!

Do you have a way to explain how to put a pendulum guide back in place on a colonial grandfather clock ? Both the guide and the pendulum came off when I moved my clock

I inherited a wall clock that hasn't been running for about eight years due to an unknown issue. When I try to start the pendulum I hear a "tick" but not a "tock" (if that makes sense). Tried winding the clock and felt that the resistance on the left upper key hole was too high. Aside from the fact that the clock stops, I am only getting chimes on the 3/4 mark and the chimes are blended in with strikes. Tried cleaning the clock and using clock oil on the pivots but no change (did not do a complete tear-down of the clock for cleaning, however). Are the two issues - the strikes/chime out of sync and the pendulum stopping - related? How do I tell if something more serious is going on than simply setting the beat? At issue is that I have heard that these Hermle movements don't really make it past 30 years. If so, would I be better off just replacing the movement? (Trying not to jump to that solution if there is something simpler I can try in the meantime.) Appreciate any help and thanks for the great video!

The problem is that you didn't show which direction you were bending the spring arm. Your own arm was in the way.

what your video doesn't make clear is which direction to bend the crutch--if it's short to the left, then do I bend the crutch to the left? or to the right? Your video doesn't make that clear.

Thank you for your video, and now I'll check the clock tick. It is an American clock, made in St Louis. I grew up with it in America and brought it here to Rome, and am told that it could be 100 years old. The present problem is that it operates for a day or so then gets stuck at 12:37. I recently had it restored and the restorer warned me not to fool with the hands. I disobeyed him and the clock is working now, but will doubtless stop again perhaps tomorrow or the next day. I'll look for another restorer but wonder if you can give me hints about what might be wrong. I could photograph it if I knew how to send you the photos, and you were willing to see them, I would do so. Preliminary observations on the behaviour as described would be welcome.

If it stops at a certain position look for binding at that position. It could be hands jamming or the chain.

This old Kienzle doesn’t have the metal rod only the pendulum arm and a rocker. The rocker is adjusted with two screws that raise and lower each side of the rocker. Very tricky to get right but satisfying when you do! The art is to raise it so that it sits right on the middle with the minimum amount of movement. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmSyaolpqtujeK8

is the pendulum length important
@blakeray9856
@blakeray9856 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, of course. If the pendulum is too long, the clock will run slow; if it is too short, it will run fast. Normally there is a screw at the bottom of the pendulum bob which will enable you to raise or lower the pendulum bob so that the clock will run accurately.

5:30 and 7:05......How did you decide which direction you needed to bend it?
@lalehbryanskrenes5692
@lalehbryanskrenes5692 6 жыл бұрын
He talked about it at 1:09 and again at 3:09 in the video. You find the center of the tick and tock and if it is to the left of the physical center of the arch, you bend to the left, for example. Another way is to put paper behind the pendulum and mark where the tick and tock are happening to get a visual of where the active arch is. Recenter that arch by bending the crutch in the appropriate direction. If you go the wrong way you will see the tick and tock arch move in the wrong direction (if the clock even runs). Finally, you can download an app on your Iphone that does the timing for you - that will give you an extremely precise measurement.
