Yes he has hope in culture and that we can affect it to change it and maneuver it. But the Gospel disappears in that he worries about doing more for the culture than for the Gospel. Mil Els I’m so sorry for your loss. Our extended family had been so “lucky”, as my husband of little faith, described our blessings. Then last year we lost his brother and our great niece, both people of great faith and service to the Lord, to the Kingdom. Both died of cancer but their witness was amazing. I’m sure many were brought to the Lord due to their example. A friend lost her older brother, her father figure, to what seems to have been a very virulent strain of the virus in Honduras. He was 84 but still working the week of his death; someone loved and admired by all.

When I regained consciousness, I said about my wife of 17 years, I'm not sure WHO she is, but I think I like her a lot. (And no, I don't remember saying this!). In 2013, the congregation I was serving when I got sick hosted a 'celebration service' that we filmed and posted onto KZbin. Run a search on my full name, "Charles Frank Kurtz" and you'll find it. Then tell everyone you know that miracles STILL happen!!! The fact that I'm alive to even SAY that is a miracle!!!

50:20 Thank you for this question. It can be an exasperating reality, even for devout Christians. "How long, O Lord?" When life feels so tedious and crushing you would rather die, how do you keep going? When Heaven is the only good thing ahead, how can believers not contemplate immediate death as a liberation? There has to be encouragement and good things down here, too. I have felt this, and my life in Canada is comfortable enough, but when I start to think of my persecuted brothers and sisters whose life is basically torture for their faith, I feel so overwhelmed. Yes, some of them experience supernatural grace in their suffering, but others really wish to end it or fall away from the faith. This is a wonderful sermon, but these are difficult questions to consider. When the apostle Paul declares: "If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable." I really feel that sometimes.

Wonderful message, however, the young people listening to this might not be able to relate nor absorb it the way an older person would; simply because this message of "nothing will really satisfy you" doesn't truly kick in until you've experienced life for a while. And when we're young we have plenty of energy, time and sometimes resources to fill our lives with entertainment and stuff that we don't really notice this dilemma.

maximsmaykillus dead Dr Peterson has been very ill, too. So many of the really great thinkers and men and women of God are leaving us. I was born and raised Presbyterian and my parents’ beliefs were so similar to Dr. Keller’s but I left the Presbyterian Church when it became soooo liberal. I live in El Salvador and I, a former activist with Democrats, see how wrong the World Council of Churches was to support what became a twelve year war here. The poor, especially the rural poor suffered so much and the rich, very little. Our son gave us these marvelous tablets and I woke up one day with one of Dr. Keller’s sermons. This faith carried my mom through twelve years of cancer, hardly ever complaining, never giving up on her rebellious daughter. I do attend a church Dr. Keller would approve of here in San Salvador. I don’t think Dr. Peterson has the faith in eternal life in Christ and his wife has had cancer. So sad. Please pray for both men. I don’t think any event in life has ever passed the test of veracity any better than the Resurrection, even according to many secular or even agnostic historians. Please just believe Jesus.

Great talk! However, there are some key points that Dr Keller misses about Buddhism: Bodhicitta and Compassion: Mahayana Buddhism emphasizes Bodhicitta, the mind of enlightenment, which is a compassionate aspiration to help all sentient beings awaken to their own Buddha-nature. It’s not an individualistic pursuit of detachment but a profound commitment to the liberation of all beings. Rather than simply detaching from desires, the practitioner develops universal compassion and works tirelessly to alleviate suffering. Buddha-Nature: In Mahayana, everyone has Buddha-nature, which is the inherent potential for enlightenment. This is not based on hope in the Christian sense (a future-oriented expectation) but on the recognition of an intrinsic truth. Keller’s framing of Buddhism as fundamentally rooted in detachment overlooks the affirmative, active pursuit of realizing this truth within oneself and others. Engaged Practice: Mahayana Buddhism also advocates for engaged practice, where compassion translates into concrete actions in the world. The Bodhisattva ideal involves working actively in samsara (the cycle of suffering) to help others realize their enlightened nature. This approach emphasizes interconnectedness rather than a withdrawal from the world, countering the idea that Buddhism is solely about escaping or detaching. Hope vs. Awakening: Where Christianity centers hope on a personal relationship with a divine, personal God and an afterlife, Mahayana Buddhism focuses on awakening to the nature of reality, which includes realizing the impermanence and interdependence of all things. The pursuit of enlightenment is not contingent on faith in a future event but on the direct experience of truth here and now. Middle Way: Mahayana Buddhism also advocates the Middle Way, which avoids extremes such as blind optimism or despair. Hope, from this perspective, could be viewed as an extreme attachment to a particular outcome or vision of the future. Instead, Buddhists strive for equanimity, accepting the impermanent nature of existence and focusing on compassionate action in the present moment without clinging to specific hopes or fears for the future.

Please note that this comment takes root in another lecture where the comments had been disabled; as such perhaps some of the material I cover is not germane to this video. I like to listen to Tim Keller as a philosopher and a christian minister… he is going to present a well reasoned argument for belief in god….that only makes sense; if it were not the case that he could make an intellectually satisfying argument for the existence of God he himself would not be a minister….He could just as easily make money selling books that argue against god….. BUT Is the man a Christian? Can he present an actual account of Christianity? I want to argue that he is not/cannot….he is a very capable apologist, but the key to Christianity is faith… It is written For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God. In what sense does Mr Keller present faith? This is the way in which he and most use the term. Definition: and keep in mind I am arguing that this definition is utterly erroneous. Faith: (1) a belief normally having little or no evidence to support it / an opinion often formed by bios. (2) aspect of a world view based partially on evidence which has been by reason projected to a conclusion beyond that evidently supported often in the existence of god. (3) belief that also exhibits some degree of trust. Ok that’s the way the world is using the term and many that are self identified as Christians also employ the term faith in a like fashion….Just ask a christian/small c like Mr. Keller if he wouldn’t mind defining the term… In what sense is that a gift from God? All men/people have beliefs we don’t need God to form them you are forming one right now as you read this comment. So one can come to only one of two possible conclusions; either Faith as referred to by scripture is something different than the commonly held view, or scripture is ridicules. If the first Mr. Keller has at best a partial grasp of Christianity after all grace through faith is the end game no faith no grace no salvation. Or Christianity no matter the quality of the argument this man of philosophy can present is bankrupt…. Either way I don’t think he can be a Christian. All the same he may be though if so should defiantly not be a teacher. So what is faith? How, if so, does it differ from belief and why are the two words often seemingly interchangeable in scripture? Belief is one of the effects of faith so it is true to say that all those with faith believe but it is not true that all with belief have faith. The belief spoken of in Scripture if the context is taken into account will also present as something deeper….the best example I can give is the often misused statement (believe and confess and you will be saved)…in fact scripture says if you believe in your heart….which begs the question then what is meant by heart? Is it saying we really, really, really, believe? Cross my heart and hope to die? Again if so then scripture is ridicules, which I am very certain is not the case. The heart spoken of here is the core of the being, that aspect of a person underling even reason, the why a person might act in a way that reason would otherwise reject, both for good or bad, the spirit. The interesting thing of that statement is its assuming a person is capable of holding such a belief at such a foundational level. To do so would demonstrate the presence/condition of faith. It is also true of faith that trust in God ensues, but that trust is based in a personal knowledge of God, one can’t actually have trust of God without such a personal relationship. One could however trust in their own conclusions or opinions as often happens, and mistake that as a quality of faith while not actually experiencing faith. Bottom line what is faith, what is this gift of God? The second birth, the spiritual birth; that is what scripture is describing when it speaks of faith…. That is what Christianity is, a new life….lived through faith. We all experience a physical world with physical rules, does and don’ts, colors, tastes, sounds, brought to us by our senses….faith, the gift God gives is a new life full of different sights, sounds, rules, and experiences. Religion says come to god, believe, do your best, look at all that fruit. Christianity says God calls and those that responded are raised, given new life, and a new nature, the same can never die as they are preserved in Christ. It’s not about behaviour it’s not about works… It is written Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin. If you have heard homosexuals are an abomination to God …that is a lie…the act is in that it hurts you the one God loves…..can you change is God asking, demanding that you do? ….NO….but in faith you will, possibly not fast, I am still in my sins but the difference in my sins and the world in theirs is; that mine are between a Father and son not a servant and court system…Mine are about love not rules. I know that out there in the world are Mormons, or Muslims that are convinced they have experienced god at some level….it is fair to ask why then would those experiences not be just as valid? I can assure you that given the opportunity to make an argument nothing would persuade those of the conclusion they hold. As a Christian I understand the spiritual world is complex, not every spirit is of the light. They are all however convincing. When a person has had that experience they become sure in it just as those who never undergo such an experience can never be. That doesn’t mean all are of God. What has been gain is not faith it is conviction. It is written Satan comes as a spirit of light…. We are warned to test every Spirit…not all do.

Let's consider who he is talking to at this moment in time. He is considering his audience. I do wish he had said at the end that in believing, you see. But you have to choose to believe, and that is faith. He may feel that those who seek and are interested enough to move forward will taste and see that the Lord is good and be led to faith in God.
