My question is, if the gender and sexuality is meant to be taken seriously then why is it all played as a joke? Its representation but when you condition the presentation as a punch line, isn't that inherently stigmatizing? or at least pigeon-holing

What happened did we have a hard time finding a white woman to play a 16th century European woman so we had to use a black woman to play this character which is when we've been played by a white woman . Historically accurately would have been a white woman at least according to the book . So basically it's a comedy in more ways than one . Did you make this Dracula white so it would be more appealing to white people . But made his love interest black so you could meet all the racial quotas . So basically a white woman lost an acting job for diversity . I'm not surprised .

Theater Troupe at times are group of people with limited cast. They hire actors when they have the money. Also, theater is more about acting, less about visual. Making the cast out of place also helps that the audience don't need to take things seriously and take it as pure fiction. So, your point is useless.
