My fave Dracula lives on Sesame Street, and he counts
@scaper85 жыл бұрын
Something I found out later in life, is that many vampire myths include some strange obsessive/compulsive need to count or order things. Like, if your being chased by a vampire throw some grain, they'll have to stop and count them; or thow a rope full of knots in a vampire's coffin and when they awake they won't go out and feed as they spend the whole night undoing the knots. When I found that out, I always wondered if The Count was a nod to those myths or just an adorable coincidence?

Zurt ...thus the point in Richard Matheson's "The Night Stalker" 1971/72. Kolchak murders the serial killer with a stake just as the Sheriff arrives. They use that as an excuse to run him out of town, by getting a judge to draw up an arrest warrant...even though an FBI agent helped defeat the vampire and aided on the ritual staking.

My favourite version of the vampire has to be the predatory vampires from Steve Niles' 30 Days of Night series. Unlike virtually every vampire story from good ol' Dracula to Twilight's sparkly vampires, it's the only one I can think of (other than The Strain's strigoi) where the vampires are depicted not as seducers/seductresses but more as a distinct species of human that see humans as food and nothing else, just like a real predator-prey relationship. In Niles' own words "what if they don't want to seduce you; what if you're just a resource to them?"

I have been reading up on that. In the mid 1700s, there was a section of Serbia that was brought into Austrian control. The Serbians started reporting instances of vampirism and the Austrian authorities started overseeing the disinterment and staking of bodies- and they wrote official reports that spread the story through the rest of Europe (many people believed the reports). Carmilla follows the pattern of these legends better than any other vampire novel I have read. People would fall ill and report being attacked at night (often identifying a deceased attacker). Then die some days later (being fed on each night). They believed that a person is infected with vampirism becomes a vampire when they die (regardless of the cause of death). Vampires do not seem to travel far from their graves, as many people felt that moving to another village is an option. Stoker's vampires have a very specific set of rules that prevent most vampires from traveling far from their graves (Dracula is clever enough to figure out ways around the restrictions).

Ohhhhhh man favorite vampire!!!! So hard to pick one. I'll always have a particular soft spot in my heart for the original Count. That said... One of my favorite versions is Fred Saberhagen's Thorn. He's incredibly intelligent, for one thing, which I always love in a character...and it doesn't hurt that the first Thorn novel I read involved his crossing paths with Sherlock Holmes! Another would be Nancy Collins' Sonja Blue. She's a real bad-ass and one of the first times I encountered a female vampire who was far more complex than "seduce men and devour them." She's terrifying, terrible, and gloriously dark; things happen around her and to her that would shatter a lesser being. VERY powerful stuff for a teenager wanting to believe that it's possible to fight against the world! I think what makes vampires so compelling for me - the ones I like best at least - is the dichotomy between a sort of cold attitude - a nobleman deigning to walk among the peasantry, or maybe just a person who KNOWS he is a monster and that he can't ever make friends of the creatures that are constantly at risk of becoming prey - if not his prey, then another's. And yet, there IS emotion beneath that aloof exterior. Thorn, and Sonja Blue as well, they're both incredibly lonely. There are no others quite like them, and they know how unique they are. They also know they are exceptional - but it's a very lonely thing to be at the top, with no friends. And yet, BECAUSE they do care, they don't dare let anyone close. It's a dynamic that sucks me in almost every time...which is why I've read a LOT of vampire books!

I would disagree about the inclusion of the Twilight “vampires”. They’re not vampires, they’re fairies with a diet quirk.
@BONERCRUSHER5 жыл бұрын
Exactly! The fact they're compared to the monsters/disease of vampires is laughable
@crusaderofthelowlands37505 жыл бұрын
Although I agree, I'd also have to argue that vampires such as Dracula don't count (hehe... Count...) as vampires. Vampires in folklore are literal monsters. Other than resembling the dead person the used to be, there's nothing human or elegant about them.
@JohanStarDragon5 жыл бұрын
Crusader of the Low Lands agreed. From what I remember reading in Dracula, the Count has learned most of what he knew as far as things like transformation and other abilities we associate with vampires was learned at a black magic school called Sholomance.

personally, I think if we're talking about different cultural interpretations of monsters, it's an important inclusion. If we were really going to get into it, the "defanging" so to speak of vampires in the Twilight series, is pretty interesting given the cultural context of early 2000s America. Clearly Stephanie Meyer didn't intend it to be a metaphor for much of anything, but the way it got so popular at the time could be an interesting comparison to a lot of social change that was happening at the time, and both a desire to pretend dangerous things weren't so scary, or the growing realization that things once thought monstrous maybe weren't so bad.

If you look at fairies from European mythology, especially Ireland, they are scary bastards. They don't deserve to be compared to Twilight. 😂

I've been wanting a way to learn about the original capabilities of mythical creatures for a while, but everything I found was so out of the way. So much information but the stuff I needed, you on the other hand get straight to the point. Detailing the origin, the ideas, the capabilities without complication. I love your videos and have found myself as a subscriber and I don't regret a thing! ^_^

Bram Stoker took alot of his inspiration from the historical Irish Vampire. Abhartach. He was a chieftain who demanded blood from his people and even hunted his people. Every time he was killed he came back. He's technically immortal. He was buried upside down and a massive stone and blackthorns were planted around his grave. I won't say where he's buried as by Irish law it's illegal to remove the stone on his grave so I don't want anyone trying to let him out. We've many other folklore Vaimpír like An dearg Dua and many others. But Abhartach is definitely the most feared

My favorite version of Dracula is my own created character. I'm a leisure writer and went the same like you about the first fear and then doing loads of research. Mostly just the historical Dracula, so I've decided to write a fiction where Dracula is not the main character but an important one nevertheless. I even have a theory to his birth of date where many historians argue between two months. Cheers for the awesome video and keep it up. 😉

Vampires from old medieval folklore were savage zombies, with few or neither memories of their past human selfs. Like the savage vampires from the Buffy graphic novel and the Supernatural tv series.

When I was a kid nothing used scared me more than Dracula, on any form, movies, cartoons, etc, and by extension the vampires in general was something that I just couldn't watch, then at 9 the first horror movie I watched was Fright Night and I ran away from the room before the ending, everything on vampires really used to terrify me, and for some reason since adulthood I just cant have enough about the subject on vampires of folklore and movies, but the traditional ones.
