What I like about Hansel and Gretel is how they rescue themselves by being clever and observant. Also, why did the Grimm brothers hate stepmothers so much?
@janeyrevanescence124 жыл бұрын
In a lot of original variations of famous Brothers Grimm stories (ie Hansel and Gretel and Snow White) it was the mother who was the original antagonist. However, the Brothers Grimm were strong believers in a unified Germany (during their lifetimes it was a loose confederation) and wanted to present German values, one of which was a loving family. Since a murderous mother doesn't quite fit into that mold...
@ycasto10634 жыл бұрын
@@janeyrevanescence12 that might be a factor, but the (antiquated) term for harsh mother "steife Mutter" and the word for stepmothee "Stiefmutter" sound fairly similar. So its very possible that the mothers in the stories were the biological parents of the children, but just very harsh and evil

@barefootanimist4 жыл бұрын
Exactly. There were a lot of factors that went into those old tales, and the "evil in the woods" motif was common, because children and infants died of disease, congenital conditions, and other reasons, and people told stories to cope. The tales were probably a way to warn kids about "over yonder," where local kids disappeared or died. There were probably men and women who abducted and killed kids, too. All kinds of things were possible. Witches were a convenient scapegoat, especially as the Malleus Maleficarum gained popularity around that time.

Killing and eating children or even other adults during famines was a very common practice throughout history. These things happen even in modern times. However, unlike in other cultures, in Christianity this was considered as immoral deed punishable by death. It is no surprise that those who did these horrible deeds in order to survive would not easily confess them, knowing that it will lead to their deaths (and therefor make this deed, they themselves consider immoral and evil, also useless). It is very unlikely that many of them (if any) confessed these things without actually doing them.

In the version I grew up with, Hänsel & Gretel were abandoned because of their stepmother, not their biological mother. The rest stays more or less the same, the woodcutter is unable to provide enough food, his wife convinces him to abandon the kids and so on. It still puts a different spin on the tale, since it's the "evil outsider" that hatches the plan to get rid of the children. Maybe it was put there to somewhat absolve the father, I don't know. Stepmothers get a lot of bad rep in Grimm's fairytales as a general rule. There's even a word called "stiefmütterlich" (which would be something like... "stepmotherly", dunno if this word even exists in english) which is used to describe neglect and emotional coldness in german.
@halfstep44 Жыл бұрын
I've never heard someone say "stepmotherly", so in that sense the word doesn't exist because it's never been used. But it's just an adverb and you could use that word if you wanted to. Because in English you can use a word in a different part of speech by simply adding a suffix, in this situation the suffix -ly

Hi! I'm an opera singer, and I've performed Gretel in Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel several times. It's still a part of the standard repertoire, and has oddly become what people might call a "Christmas opera" - something often programmed at Christmastime. It's also often presented as being an opera for children, and is many kids' first-ever opera. Interestingly, in smaller productions, often done on tours or by smaller companies who want a less involved production, the gingerbread children are often cut, bringing the story back to the more expected version of the plot we often think of today, sans rescuing the aesthetic gingerbread-fence-kids. But both their parents do come and find them at the end, leading to a very happy finale involving many group hugs! ✨Thanks SO MUCH for making this!

1:34 Explanation: The father never really wanted to leave the kids in the woods because he truly loved them. He was manipulated by his egoistic and selfish wife (STEP-MOTHER of his children) who did not feel any affection for his kids. The real mother died earlier and was said to be a very loving and good person which is a stark contrast to the step-mom who basically throws the kids out so that she has enough food for the following winter. Because of that no german child (including myself) was sad to hear that the step-mother had passed away when Hansel and Gretel returned home.

No, in the original versions, most of the evil stepmothers were actually the mothers. The Grimm Brothers altered it into stepmothers, because they strongly believed in both a unified Germany and familiar harmony and wanted to bring this over in their work. So of course it wouldn't have worked that well, if the mothers had been the evil ones. In fact, the Grimm Brothers were urged to tone down some of their tales, because the audience, or their friends didn't like them the way they were. So, lots of self-censoring. Which is hilarious, because some newer versions of some tales are even worse than the old ones. *shudders* O_e

I recall the wife in Hansel and Gretel actually being their stepmother, and not their biological mother, which made it easier for her to suggest abandoning the kids versus her husband who was their biological father. There seemed to be a cultural distrust of stepmothers in Europe around that time period, hence why they tend to be antagonists in stories, though I haven't done enough research to find out why that is.

I'm excited to start seeing more content from this channel - and super excited to see Lindsay Ellis on board! I'm not familiar with Princess Weekes but if she's as cool as the others on this channel I'm looking forward to learning more!

Guys be careful with rebranding, you've already started building up a following, you don't wanna loose people who don't know who you are cause of such a drastic name a logo change Also LINDSAY ELLIS I'm a big fan I'm glad shes on this team

To be honest might already be too late. Monstrum is still doing way better than the new stuff, showing that it might not have been a good idea. I highly douby a lot of new viewers came solely for the new stuff, meaning that only a small portion of people were interested. The monstum logo and title were unique and had a lot of attracting potential. The channel could have probably grown a lot more had that not changed.

Don't care one way or the other about the channel's name. Will continue watching Monstrum, and nothing else. Best wishes. Jorge.

You could do an entire season of episodes just on stories like _Urashima Taro_ which are essentially Japan's Grimm fairy tales. I read a book of them when i was a kid, and later, the game _Okami_ came out that borrowed from all of them.

I love the high quality content you guys put out, keep it up.

Long as you keep the name Monsterum for the videos that actually contain monsters!!!! I'm good. But be cool to see that you're going to do stuff on like a centaur or Baba Yaga which technically aren't exactly considered monsters depending on what story you hear

Not gonna lie, having a challenging day at work but seeing new Monstrum content and the news that accompanied it was a nice pick me up. Can’t wait to see what comes next!

Hmm a bit worried about this change as these "additions" stretch outside my typical interests moreover the name is far less unique and interesting overall so this sounds more like a sign that things aren't looking up behind the scenes. Hopefully these worries are unjustified but I can't help but be nervous....

There's a lot of french influence in the Grimm's tales, not only because of maybe French ancestry in extended parts of their family, but because our famous folklore "collectors" were pretty content with sitting around and having fairytales brought to them :D They lived and worked for a long time in Kassel, which had a huge Hugenotte (French Protestant) population since the Prince had taken them in after the religious persecutions in France. So many Hugenottes who told the Brother Grimm their stories told them French stories, which is why we also have Cinderella, little red riding hood and many more. Also, I am currently binging this series because I LOVE IT!!! The way you go indepths with what made the story the way it is today, the circumstances that invented it and thus the fears, desires and collective cultural conscience that surrounds these monsters is all I could have ever asked for. Keep up the good work!

Always loved the version in Ever After High. The daughter of the witch just likes to bake but people don't trust her food. Not helped by the fact that the new Hansel and Gretel accuse of every thing that goes wrong.
