16:40 During neutral sections if you're actively drawing power when you enter them, you can cause an ark to the pantograph. This can cause damage to the overhead lines, the pantograph, and the electrical systems on the locomotive. Dropping the pantograph ensures you are safely isolated from this. Modern trains have systems to deal with this automatically, IIRC neutral sections exist because the whole network isn't powered from start to end, but there are several sections that get the power supply from their own sub station. So when you enter a neutral section you leave the network powered by one substation and enter one that is powered by another electrical sub station..

Cheers for the explanation! Was wondering about that myself. I presume those neutral sections do have a way to power them in case a train stops at just the "wrong" spot? Or are they not really sections, but more like a gap in the wire that's only a couple inches long?

@@AgentWest Honestly no Idea, I've only read that in some places those sections are insulated and that the different networks can't be too close to each other. I haven't read yet an explanation as to why have overheads on those sections at all instead of empty space, maybe it's easier to convert them to powered section when there are changes to the network.

Hey Drae Love your videos. power engineer here who works electric train, what you drive through is a neutral section, reason for doing it is a phase change there 3 phase ( L1 L2 L3 ). when trains enter a neutral sector, it still has one phase with e.g. L1 and when it exits, it exits in L2 this gives a short this only applies to AC networks. this is made very simple for convenience

@@Spartan9285 no the current is the same but the phase of the phase is different. Yes and no where I work the trains are lowering the pantograph ( the thing that is in contact with the power line).

Train driver here, Yes at the signal you need to disconnect main switch, from load circuitry. In simple: For electrical reasons the Overhead Powerline Electricity is "bad" at this section, or just not there at all. It can have a variety of reasons in detail why, but sure is you don't want to ignore the "EL" Signals (Electrical) At this magnitude of electrical powers even a small deviation in AC Frequency can fry your XX Million €/$ Locomotive to a brick if ignored.

There is a story in Siberian about a legendary cargo train and the alcoholic driver who sometimes jumps out and gets unconscious. But don’t mess with him, a sharpshooter who can take out a horde of deer or a bear on the moving train. And even with a strange rumor that he had killed someone on the trail, but it’s just a rumor with no clue.
