Draft Issues In Your Home | Ask Russ

On this edition of Ask Russ, CSIA Director of Education Russ Dimmitt talks about draft issues in your home's appliances (gas boiler, water heater, fireplace, etc.). What that means is the products of combustion (Oil, Wood, Natural Gas, etc.) in your appliances aren't getting outside your home properly.

I converted to gas fireplace when moving into home 20 years ago. However shortly after using fireplace within a couple months I began to smell gas. I had someone come out said no gas leak. Could be downdraft? What should I do have it cleaned? It didn’t have a gas odor when I first began to use it. Please help me Thank you! I never used it now for 20 years. It happened to both fireplaces. No one could tell me what to do

Something is leaking or the burners are not operating properly if you smell gas. Make sure the burners are cleaned and burning 100% of the gas. May still have a drafting issue but you should not smell gas. Have the gas company or fire department check for gas....they have good equipment.
