Hey just wanted to say that I understand where you are coming from I felt similar, what a fucked up thing the back talk in the beginning. I also had a pretty similar thing with "Fun with dick and Jane" movie, different genre I know but I could not find humor in it, I was annoyed that a movie which showcased how we are still honestly in the modern day wage slaves to money and jobs for access to food and shelter was presented as this frivolous funny thing to watch this couple deal with that in an extreme way. I just felt agitated and disgusted and stopped half way through. "Haha we have to have a job or we starve to death, good thing we live in a free country based on liberty and slavery is over though amirite, this movie is so funny, haha!" Not funny to me at all.

The most underrated horror movie ever - the jump scares are masterful, the nods to Hitchcock and Evil Dead, the story of losing your soul in pursuit of classist ideals, the metaphor of weight and eating dissorders as signifiers of class, plus the nods to Hitchocock, chefs kiss! This is about her eating disorder. It is said that she was a fat kid, and every horror element is about things going into our out from her mouth. And the cake with the eye (watching her eating). He is really good at balancing the two tones without one going over the other. That's why some other comedy horror movies fail is because they add to much humor to the recipe and not the horror. Movies/shows like The Evil Dead franchise, Army of Darkness (not sure it counts as horror but still putting it here), Shaun of the Dead, American Psycho, Phantom of The Paradise and Ash vs The Evil Dead work because they add both horror and comedy to make a perfect film without a tone going off balance from the other

Such an underrated film. I legitimately would place it within the top 10 horror films of its decade! Loved the layered story about morality. Christine made some pretty dark grey decisions before she was cursed and continued to do so after she finds out and gets increasingly desperate to escape it. Would many of us make the same dubious choices as her in the same situation? Yeah! Was her punishment too harsh for her mistakes? Absolutely! But was she ultimately a self-serving person who had many chances to do the right thing but instead let her insecurities and ambition lead her astray? She was... That's where the depth of the story lies. It is also interesting that both times we saw people get "dragged to hell", it happened at the same moment they could have died through non-supernatural means (the boy at the beginning fell off the second floor and Christine was run over by a train).
@KonohazFinest3 жыл бұрын
Totally ridiculous plot so she gets hell for all eternity for what she did.
@judson92233 жыл бұрын
@@KonohazFinest Yes she does, that is a fact about the events that play out in the film. The whole point of the horror is that it is unsettling precisely because what she does isn't "that bad" and something many of us can envision doing ourselves.

I low-key hate this movie for the fact that Christine was just doing her job. They even extended the loan multiple times already, but NOPE witch-Karen thinks she can beg her way out of it :p I think it would've been wonderfully dark if the boyfriend got sent to hell instead of her. Like everything was going well for her and then the love of her life would just get dragged to hell.
@EricGraham943 жыл бұрын
But don’t forget that Christine kinda deserved to burn in hell. She killed her own cat just to save her own skin, almost considered giving the button away to an innocent family, couple or a sick elderly man, defiled a corpse, and WAS DUMB ENOUGH TO NOT CHECK THE DAMN ENVELOPE

Saw this in the theater and had a great time by myself. It was what I expected: A ridiculously over the top gross out movie with again over the top performances. I wasn't looking for the lead actress, Alison Lohman to give an amazing performance-she gave me what I wanted in the context of the film:an essentially good but definitely flawed character who was going to be dragged to hell at the end. It couldn't have ended any other way. There was no fight against a big demon at the end, where she won and spare her from hell. It was a good, dark, fatalistic ending. Justin Long's (her boyfriend) face at the end was both hilarious and drepressing.

Apparently it wasn't a literal demon. It was a metaphor for her own demons/eating disorder. She never eats in the movie (except for the ice cream). Every single thing else which enters her mouth is sickening, disgusting, unwanted, against her will etc plus Mrs Ganish's granddaughter tells her "you used to be a fat girl didn't you?" So it could be a movie about her eating disorder and how it is her own personal curse/demon which gets her in the end.

Loved this movie! A solid 7. Don't forget to check out Ravenous(1999), and Crazies(2010). And if you are brave...the South Korean film, I Saw The Devil(2010).

Some people find it sad what happened to the bank lady in the end. How can it be sad when she could give the old lady another extension? The bank lady wanted a better / higher place in the banking job, so she was selfish, decided to take the chance to say no to the extension and maybe then could reach her dream. So, maybe some of you should see the movie one more time because you missed some things in the movie. Or, maybe you are as the bank lady? 👩🏼 👈😬 And before Hell taking the bank lady, in the ending she saying to her boyfriend: "I could give her another extension, but I didn't. It was my decision and it was wrong of me." See the movie again. Then maybe the old lady are not evil anymore?

Fully fair review! When I watched it the first time I was in Raimi fan-mode so I was like, "Oh, there's The Classic!" Then, "I really appreciate the body fluid being recognized"...Then, "yep, full slap-stick comedy"...Then "I'm ok with this, but I'm still bothered by...". I still love this movie.

The chin sucking! It made their "relationship" closer :D And in the end when she hugged her in the grave, she was like "Hey girl, long time no see, hell of a life." *SARCASM meter filled up*

I like this movie, but I really wanted to love it. I hope Sam Raimi will eventually make another hardcore horror film that’s not PG13

We hope so too! But in the meantime we can enjoy his doctor strange movie coming out soon and the new evil dead film ‘evil dead rise’ (produced by Sam Raimi)

both of them were so chaotic on this video and i love that

It's a Sam Raimi movie. That's all you need to know. Also, Alison Lohman is cute.

BTW the witch is a Hungarian speaking Roma (there's a large Romani minority in Hungary) and her curse is "Az ördög szálljon beléd!", meaning "May the devil possess you." And her insult "szajha" is just the typical gendered insult.

This movie, and Evil Dead 2, are the TWO most Raimi-esque movies of his career, in my opinion. Drag Me to Hell is a classic actually, I love it. It's surprisingly scary for a PG-13 movie.

In a previous comment, I said that Shaun was super cute, but I'm fully in love with Tom. Just had to put it out there.

One aspect about this film people forget that lends it more weight is that it came out during the height of the great ression.

I thought this film was vastly superior to any of the Evil Dead movies. Your score are really really lower than I thought on this one, wow. I’m actually surprised since you gave mediocres movies a better score in the past…but hey, opinions. Glad you still somewhat liked it though.
