Ever read the Bible? "A camel will pass through the eye of a needle before a rich man will pass through the gates of heaven" -- outside the US people value some things over money. "Crazy" I know, but when money runs out or becomes worthless paper, it is other things which save your life. Remember that rich guy in Titanic who tries to buy his way onto a lifeboat, and his money fails to save him for the first time in his life? When the situation gets down to basic survival, such things suddenly become obvious. People who live safe, comfy lives often learn the lessson too late--at the moment they are about to die.

All of you including the commenter have completely missed what she meant by “you shame me”. Most people miss this. It has nothing to do with Christine having denied Ganush the extension on her mortgage. It has everything to do with how Christine behaved like a stupid idiot, making Ganush feel even worse as she was making herself very vulnerable in a way she likely never ever had before. Christine humiliated Ganush in front of everyone in that office. THAT’S the crux of it all. Now, whether or not Ganush somehow managing to break and enter into Christine’s car to wait for her to get off work , attacking her, and then setting a curse upon her that would damn her to hell for all eternity was justified, that’s a different story.

Well "I beg you" isn't really an argument, is it. To feel shamed when someone denies you something that you begged for is the equivalent of saying that you should be entitled to immediately have everything you ask for, which is one of the most arrogant and pretentious things I've ever heard. Of course we should try to be caring and empathic to each other, and compassion should matter, but... it's not a free pass on everything. So, essentially, that "you shame me" was incredibly stupid.

The business didn't rip off the old lady or treat her unfairly. She signed a contract where she borrowed money against collateral, then she failed to pay it back multiple times. They were well within their rights to end the mortgage and repossess the house to recover the lost money. Her refusal to grant Ganush’s mortgage extension is said to be motivated by pure greed (wanting to impress her boss in order to score the promotion at work). On top of that, her attempts to save herself all involve her... (A) Betraying her own principles (killing her cat despite being a professed vegetarian and animal lover), (B) Shifting the blame/punishment toward others when confronted (blaming the bank when Ganush’s granddaughter confronts her, blaming her manager when faced with the Lamia, and ultimately trying to pass on the curse to Ganush herself), and (C) Getting other people to risk their lives for her (Shaun San Dena in particular). All of this, according to Raimi himself, was portrayed in such a way that the audience would root for Christine throughout, despite all of the selfish/cowardly behavior listed above. The intention was that, by the time Christine finally met her end, the audience would be shown that they all deserved Christine’s fate just as much as Christine herself did. *SOURCE:* www.dreadcentral.com/news/11797/sam-raimi-talks-drag-me-to-hell/

You make a very good point. It was likely done on purpose in this movie, because Sam Raimi has stated that he intended for Christine to look sweet and charming at first glance compared to the not-so-charming, over-the-top Mrs. Ganush (thus getting the audience to sympathize with and root for Christine early on) but then gradually reveal Christine to be a selfish hypocrite underneath it all, willing to betray her morals, blame others (the bank, her manager, etc.) when confronted with the consequences of her actions, and make others risk their lives so that she can avoid having to deal with said consequences. Based on that interpretation, having Christine be so blinded by the prospect of a promotion that she turns a blind eye (no pun intended) to Mrs. Ganush’s suffering makes sense. But yeah, I don’t see why someone else in Christine’s position wouldn’t have at least tried to offer more help for Mrs. Ganush (within reason, of course).

Yep, because money is more important than people, more important than relationships, more important than honor, more important than honesty, more important than mercy in America. Americans keep being told "they hate us for our freedom" --- NO -- it's the greed, hypocrisy, and psychopathology they hate. The Godfather has a few similar scenes. The clash between a human relationship-based value system and a bureaucratic system based on following politically correct formalities which serve as a veneer to cover a system which is fundamentally about gaining individual wealth and status at the expense of other people and any long term relationships with them. The "survivor" mentality--betrayal is rewarded while loyalty is punished.

Me personally I would've given Mrs ganush the extension. During that time would've tried to look for a loophole so she could keep her home. I volunteered at two nursing homes when I was in high school. While they were nice homes and took really good care of the seniors lot of their relatives didn't see them for months because they were busy and the citizens felt lonely at times. Lot of them had pretty great stories from their youth and were really good people. I also understood why Mrs ganush didn't want to move in with her granddaughter. Mrs ganush didn't want to burden her granddaughter and wanted her to live her life.

I have a theory to this whole movie, I think that Stu (the Asian guy) planned this whole entire thing. He knew that Christine would get the job as an assistant manager, so he hired an old gypsy woman to curse her, that way Christine can loose the job and Stu can win. So, the first thing Stu did was find a gypsy woman that had overdue payments, so he found Mrs. Ganush to do the job. Stu must of have offered her a lot of money, so Mrs. Ganush agreed to do it. After the events of the bank and the curse, Stu went to go and steal the paper work that Christine had so that way he can win the job more easily. After Mrs. Ganush died maybe Stu still gave money to the family but when Christine was at the café, she threatened him by giving him the button, and Stu pretended that he was all afraid because he knew that Christine would leave him alone. After Christine decided to not give him the button, Stu just decided to give up the job as assistant manager before Christine changes her mind.

I would have extended the loan after she said that she has nowhere else to live. You should not make someone become homeless.

Julian It's not like she had nowhere to stay, Christine told her that she mentioned a granddaughter whom she could stay with or a nursing home

She isn't making her homeless, the woman made herself homeless when she didn't pay for the house. Its no different to going into restaurant, eating food and then refusing to pay. You can't blame the restaurant for that and in this case you can't put the responsibility of her homelessness onto the individual working at the bank.

Well I partially agree with this, I can understand both sides and it's a complex issue. However, there's no doubt that eternal torture is an excesive retribuition for anything, and let alone that.

0:31 Besides, nursing homes cost money and the whole reason why she's here is because she has none.

0:17 Ganush was told she could live with her granddaughter once the bank took the house back, but Ganush wouldn’t want to burden her.

The revenge of the old lady is too much. But there is no need for Christie to “let go, let go, securityy..” Damn, I meant no need to back off like the that man. People have their hardship, so enduring them for a moment isnt too big a thing to react like that. In life, 1 or 2 consoling talking would ease situations.

That lady was not gonna stop had she not done it that way. She was kissing her legs and dress and, kneeling down in front of her. I would’ve done the same thing. I would not want someone kneeling down in front of me, grabbing my clothes, kissing and clawing on skirt while yelling “please, please, help me”. That alone is enough to call security. It’s invasion of personal space and quite frankly can be seen as harassment.

People saying Christine didn’t deserve to go to hell forget Christine made a conscious decision to be a banker.
