The reason movies always cut palms is because it's easy to hide a blood pack in a closed fist and have them squeeze it. Especially when practical effects took even more work than they do now. But in reality you should never cut your hand for a few reasons: you have A LOT of nerve endings in your palm, so it's going to hurt A LOT. It's going to be very difficult to keep clean, because you use your hands for everything. Which is also the reason it'll take forever to heal. And a scar on your hand can cause issues with touch sensitivity and fine motor control. If you ever have to cut yourself for a ritual, use the outside of your forearm. It won't hurt as bad, it'll be easier to keep covered and cleaned, and it can't cause severe, long term damage outside of the scar from the cut itself.
