Thank you! Enjoyed the memories. Announced the track's opening in 1966, and a few others too. Great times!

Cool, I am from LI and remember NY dragway, I used to go there a with a friend about 1971 when I was 16. I never remember 4 cars racing at 1 time. Loved the old muscle car battles and the smell of burning rubber, back in those days even getting into the 13's with a street car was impressive Back when America was great

Great footage. I was there that weekend , my first time at the drags. Too bad Long Island will never hear the sound of a top fuel engine again. N.Y. National closed at the end of the 1980 season. Really miss it.

Thank you for this, I worked every weekend selling programs during this time period so I looked carefully for myself in the grandstands but no luck. Either way, an instant memory trip right back in time. So clear!!

The 65 GTO at 3:58 was my dad's. E2 class. Typically ran mid 13's. Just showed him - he was totally stoked.I always liked looking at old pictures of National while he told me all about it. To see the video was really cool. The GTO was given to me 20 years ago after he got married. It still has the NATIONAL SPEEDWAY WINNER stickers on it. He really liked the video - good memories.

I grew up at this track. My cuz started taking me out to national speedway in the mid 60's. I've been a gearhead since. Met Big Daddy out there in 68. Still have that picture of him & me. L.I. was great back then with all the tracks. What a great head full of memories.😁. My cuz was the owner of Mustang Magic

I used to race my '65 Mustang there stock optional. Never won but it cost us $10 to enter and for the money we got to hang out all day and watch the funny cars and dragsters. Great times; beats the hell out of playing video games all day.

Originally from Nassau Co. Used to hitch to exit 70 on the LIE on Sundays and sneak under the fence away from the entrances. I woke up at 4:00am to get there by track open for time trials and qualifying. I think the Ramchargers funny car was the first to crack 200mph then. Was fifteen yo in that year and can think about it from your videos. Everything was connected back then. Thanks
@Flussig1 Жыл бұрын
You're probably remembering the first funny car in the sixes, Ramchargers Challenger, driven by Leroy Goldstein. National Speedway, June 1970.

When these tracks disappear the community is just setting the stage for some local kid to make a decision in the street that could have bad consequences.Rather than curse him,they need to look in the mirror for whom to blame. Only takes one homebody with a recently bought and built house nearby to start the death call for ANY track.

I have some similar footage made by my father and his friends from about 67. I remember showing it to one of my friend's dad's in 1992 [when I was in HS], and he commented something to the effect that these were new cars that these guys were racing ie beating on. That has always stuck with me for some reason, I suppose since Ive always been an afficionado, it never dawned on me that these were once new cars with warrantees and such.
