What's a good way to test a newly-built car at speed and not kill anyone on the street? Drag racing, of course! Yes I suck at drag racing. No, an SLC isn't built for drag racing. Yes my tires are old. No I don't care about any of that!! It was still fun as heck and a good test to see if anything blew up...

Yeah, must've been really nervy. The strip seems really narrow and short. It feels like the car is only getting into its stride by the end of the run.

I've been watching. Very nice. Mine: 1965 AC COBRA MKIII (427 Aluminum Ford Racing Side Oiler basic engine, with all my own specification components). I live 60 miles from every engine/chassis builder in Southern Clownifornia. 648 Flywheel HP / 574 ft lbs Torque. I haven't heard what you're using for ground equipment but I had a major revelation when reconfiguring mine. Ended up with 17" Pirelli P Zero tires with a 15" contact patch (each) in the rear. Installed Penske Racing Shocks (dual action) with full adjustments. I gave Penske Racing the car specs and "they" (not me) set them up (front separate from rear). I have never changed the settings. The power is something to be careful with. The tires and shocks made it a completely different animal. She's not remotely the same car. Expensive stuff ... yes, but worth every penny. People ask my wife (get used to it) "how fast will it go" ... she responds ... "it travels at the speed of money".

Wow, that Cobra sounds amazing -- must be a beast on the track! I'm running the QA1 double-adjustable coil overs that come with the SLC kit with slightly stiffer rear springs. I just set them all in the middle to start and will try to dial it in once I get to a track. I hear you on the cost bit -- I blew my budget about 75% through the project :)

@@markb5066 She's a trip, but likely not more so than yours. I've had her 9 years now and am still learning her ways. Once the suspension was set up I went looking for mentors to help me with cornering. Interesting, most that can do, can't teach. The best for me has not been in person but Jackie Stewart on videos. His 4 segment cornering break-down has really helped me. My Cobra has some repeatable quirks that, once you get onto them are manageable. You never break while cornering, only on approach, then gently apply power to manage her balance and keep her from getting upset. While in segment 2, never let off the power or she will "dive" into the turn, just hold the power and she will track perfectly. I've finally learned in segment 3 not to fear the power and come on a little stronger to keep the circuit time improving. She has this crazy dance where she "gets on her toes" like watching Ali box. At first it feels like she's going to break but doesn't. Those tires and shocks totally made the difference. Before she "would break" and then she's gone, no getting her back either. I'm really enjoying her these days.

Thanks! Once I get to a roadrace track, hopefully this fall (MSR and COTA are both reasonably close to me) I'll post some videos. I don't have good telemetry equipment, but I do have Harry's Lap Timer which works great for track days (g-forces, track map, speeds, lap times).

@@markb5066 Totally understand. I watch a lot of GT and WEC and I couldn't even afford to go watch when they came to South Africa. Can't imagine what it would cost to move around with a whole car. Would you ever consider getting sponsors to make it happen? Honestly, I think with the right exposure, these cars and their ownership would gain a lot of value. Beyond wishing to own one, as a semi-pro mechanic, I would be really excited to work on one. I am subbed on a few owners' channels and I think most of the owners are top notch car guys. I am really inspired to work towards buying a kit of my own and going racing as often as I can.

There are a few pro drivers with SLCs out there, but mine is purely a street / track toy. A couple track days each year is all I'm hoping for due to limited time and even more limited skill :) If you haven't seen it already, check out gt40s.com forums, there is an SLC section with a bunch of build threads as well.

Thanks! The kit with the chassis, suspension, body and most of the components is about $45K USD from Superlitecars.com Then you have to buy an engine, transaxle and other components depending on how you want to build it. That doesn't include labor of course :)

Holdup--so Im looking to start building the motor for this car by next year. Gotta save and all that. I plan to go to about 700-800 HP. But you're telling me (the internet I guess) that with 572 HP at the wheels and a shitty reaction time you still put down an 11.22??? You didnt have any traction control or take-off assist...so Im thinking that I could get well into the 10 second bracket at some point?
@markb5066
@markb5066 Жыл бұрын
Well remember reaction time has nothing to do with ET since the clock doesn't start until AFTER my shitty reaction time. But yea, even with 10-year-old hard tires since 60% of the weight is on the rear wheels and the car only weighs about 2650 with fuel/fluids (+200lbs for my fat butt). It was also pretty hot (90+) that day. I think with the HP you're shooting for, better launch skills and fresh tires, low/mid 10s would certainly be realistic.
How hard is it to register a garage built supercar?
