Driving IRBs for the surf club we're pretty used to dealing with submerged outboards. They're pretty resilient bits of kit. Our routine is to hose down, take out the sparks, drain the carb, invert the motor and pull the starter 20 times, put some petrol in the cylinder heads, invert and pull again for 10 times, put the carb drain plug back in, either clean or replace the sparks and then fire it up. When you're training to drive the IRB, the outboard gets more than a few dunkings and they're fine for years after the roll-over procedure. You did well :)

The outboard: Let her run for a few hours (preferably with the engine cover off, to let any water that is left evaporate and dry out) , then replace the oil, oil filter, fuel filter one more time. Spray the electric components down with some WD-40 and most likely it'll be ok. Glad you're both safe.

Just an INSANE EXAMPLE of how naturally and instinctively good you BOTH are at recording and producing your channel, and WE are the beneficiaries of all that hidden-and I think mostly unknown-talent. HONDA just received millions of dollars of free and perpetual advertising; and if they don’t reward that by sponsoring you, they just missed the biggest, free, WIN-WIN-WIN situation in their history!! We absolutely love your videos, and vicariously sharing your adventures! Fair winds….

Run that outboard until its nicely warmed up, then change the oil and filter again to play it safe. I usually use cheap oil and filter for that first warm up run for drying out the engine after a dunk before putting the good stuff in. This is where WD40 really excels since Water Displacement formula 40's main purpose is for displacing water to prevent future corrosion so a healthy spritzing with WD40 and wipe down will help prevent future corrosion issues and electrical problems from the dunking. Best!

Very lucky with the outboard, being pull start and no alternator a blessing. However it does generate power to spark so hopefully those electronics don't fail in the future. We always lift our tender for events such as this, last thing you want to be doing is lifting your tender when you are dragging or smashed with bad weather. Sitting at anchor in 50 knots is never nice. Added benefit to taking the time lifting each day is it reduces theft risk, or the painter breaking and you lose the tender completely. Fingers crossed your outboard lives on!

I've got the flipped dinghy, drowned outboard in storm T shirt as well. Number 1 thing once running is to run it as much as you can, as hard as you can, as early as you can post drowning. Get a good tank or more of fuel through it. If sea water got into the crankcase it can take more than a quick run to get it out of all the places it can settle.

For your single headsail story: Weather helm is the tendency of a boat to round up into the wind, usually because there is not enough sail forward of the center of resistance of the keel, for example just the main set Lee helm is the boat wanting to head down away from the wind, because of too much sail area forward of the center of resistance, for example with just a headsail set Think you guys would have had huge amounts of lee helm in that case

I feel for you. We had a huge haboob roll across the desert in San Carlos Mexico. It brought winds in excess of 60 kts. I saw it coming and secured my deck but forgot to shorten my painter line. My dinghy with motor weighing close to 200 lbs went sailing like a kite and flipped. I used the same wind to flip it back over. Although the motor was submerged for only a minute or two I spent the next three days flushing it out with fresh water; carbs and heads and all. I had to change the oil four times until the oil looked normal. 11:46

Tidbit of trivia, when you change the tack you are on by putting the stern through the wind instead of the bow, is called "wearing" (sometimes 'ware'). Tack is bow through the wind, gybe is stern through the wind downwind, and a wear is to go from one upwind tack to the other by gybing. Typically used by square rig ships, but as you found out, can be done with a fore-aft rigged boat.

I've sailed in winds gusting 47 knots, that was interesting, the winds just blew up on us all of a sudden, the others all wanted to stop right there in the middle of a large expanse of sea then they just dropped everything and let the sails flap around, nobody was listening to anybody, least of all me who had sailing experience and I couldn't get any of them to listen to my instruction. Not long after that they started to get sea sick one after the other due to the boat just bobbing around. We were ok sailing in it, we were safe and making way towards the nearest bay with shelter. That trip I will never forget.

Whenever an engine is submerged in either freshwater or saltwater, it's best to drain all gas and oil, pull all spark plugs, and and while it's empty, blow out all interior spaces to the point of being mostly dry (about 20 minutes in each space). Clean and gap the plugs, replace, fill with oil and gas, and start 'er up. Now, here's the tough part: You need to run it for a full hour at slightly above idle in order to warm up all innards enough to completely boil off all moisture. Failure to do so will likely lead to expensive repairs in the future.

New kid on the block here...from Nz. As an old seadog my advice would be/is, never ever leave the outboard on your dinghy. Ever. Yes in your case its sorted, however it's a good habit to get into lifting the O/board up when you're anchoring in locations like that. With the dinghy, just raft it alongside with fore and aft lines. Easy peasy. I haven't had a chance to observe your anchoring system, but always power back on your anchor. Down south here in the roaring 40s it pays to dig deep. Same as Beagle Channel with the horrendous williwaws, it doesn't pay to play with nature. I salute you in keeping your camera going. Personally, I would have concentrated on keeping boat and crew safe instead. I'm sure your subscribers would understand that. Anyway many thanks for sharing. And until next time all the very best. Btw I have subscribed. Cheers.

Was only a few miles from one anchorage to the next and weather wasn't due for a couple hours but so we took a chance, big mistake!! We have a porta bote so when hoisted vertically there was no buoyance and motor sank about 2m before hoisting out. I thought it was gone but did the same stuff as you guys and was purring again within a couple hours.

Wow - that was a tough episode to watch. We're lucky to have davits, and have a cast iron rule to lift the dinghy every night in case of unforeseen weather, dragging etc (not to menton security). But pretty unrealistic to do that with a canoe stern and no davits. Given the circumstances, you did an amazing job to get the sutation under control while also remaining pretty damn calm and collected (and props to Kiara for getting the camera too!). I feared the worst for your engine too, but you nailed the flushing and caught it in time. Watching your elation at the end reinforced one of my major learnings about this lifestyle. Weirdly, it often feels better to fix the stuff that goes wrong, than to have never had the problem in the first place (not that I'd wish the problems on myself or anyone else, but the highs really do feel amazing after the depths of despair that immediatley precede it). Great episode!

Wow that was incredibly lucky although you had two advantages, first you acted quickly and removed the engine and gave it a water bath to remove the salt, Second the water salinity up there is lower than in the med...where most cruisers live. But this was really good to be able to clean it quickly. When I first heard the engine starting, my first thought was that you were still not out of the woods. You seem to have a hoist for the engine, maybe you need to use it more...(I'm sure you have already reached THAT conclusion). It is amazing watching you and your level of energy. The glacier thing was most amusing...when I saw the video last week, my first thought was that the glacier was rather far away and that a four or five-hour trek implied that there was a good path. Still amazing, so few cruisers make it up north. It looks beautiful.
