They are bad. Like the 8th wonder of the world. Kill a dozen or more every time you clap your hands in the worst of times. All a part of it though you adapt as man and dog do so well - helps keep you moving and not wasting time either! In the evening the temperatures can drop, even to near freezing anytime in the summer in Newfoundland and especially Labrador where this trip was. So you always get a nice break once it is dark! Always gotta look for that bright spot. Appreciate you tuning in Man in the Woods all the best, safe journeys

Just finished a 36-day Menihek-Clarke-McPhadyen-Ashuanapi trip in cedar-canvas canoes and carrying wooden wannigans--truly beautiful land, thought about this trip the whole way through! 31 days of rain, water was high: stacks were huge and alders submerged, even into August. Love what you do!

Sounds like a great trip I love that country. Isn't it great how the elements can change the landscape and spice up the adventure? Hard to beat it. Hope you kept warm enough! I was there in the fall and had some crisp beautiful days on the McPhayden and into Quebec. Also camped on a memorable beach on the western shores of Menihek. Great memories glad you have made some there too. I'll be up in that area again soon but further north. Thanks for sharing your trip and watching. All the best, safe journeys - Justin

Hi Justin. Have you ever tried tying a "bridle" or harness that attaches the the line under the waterline? I've tried it and it is a total game changer when lining up rapids!

That’s why you now use a Packraft? Greetings from Germany. Matthias
@JustinBarbournlexplorer2 жыл бұрын
No, I still canoe but have used the raft more on recent trips. Often it's easier to get around with it in Newfoundland versus canoe. Rivers and brooks can be small and rocky on the way to the tucked away waters so often I get out and easily carry raft around them. Or if I have to portage over marshes to the headwaters I have been exploring it can get tough with the canoe. Raft is versatile. Thanks for watching Matthias

Great adventure! Release more and longer rope to decrease the angle and pulling power ;)
@JustinBarbournlexplorer2 жыл бұрын
For sure thks. A longer rope running from bow to stern so I could keep it further out in the current/away from rocks would have been ideal. But I was new to this upriver stuff and not over analyzing things - just taking a swing. Most effective way to do it is to do it ; )

I wonder if poling the canoe would have made some sections easier. I don't know how hard that skill is to pick up but I think you wouldn't have much trouble with it. Stick handling and balance, nothing new to you.
@JustinBarbournlexplorer2 жыл бұрын
Thks It may have and I considered it but was also new to the whole upriver thing and was just getting out and getting things done. I was hesitant to be out in that raging current standing in the canoe with all my belongings 150-200+ km from civilization. Some rugged places on that river valley if shit hit the fan not even a chopper could have landed close by to get us out. So as you could imagine I was being very cautious. Sticking close to shore and dragging the canoe slowly felt best. Especially while trying to keep track of Saku on the dense banks. I have since tried poling on smaller rivers and in the future plan on utilizing it
