Wizards and Warriors new animated fantasy documentary lore video will talk about the world of Dragon Age and describe its history before the games. In the waning years of the Blessed Age, reptilian wings blanketed the sun. Dragons, thought to have been hunted to extinction centuries earlier, reappeared in the skies above the world of men and devastated the countryside of Orlais and Nevarra. Reading this as an epochal omen, Faustine II, Divine of the Chantry, declared a new age: the Dragon Age, which in her holy wisdom, she predicted would be a time of violence, upheaval, and dramatic change. Thus begins the period in which the titularly named Dragon Age games take place, yet this is not where the history of its world begins. We will talk about the vibrant and tumultuous continent of Thedas, exploring the immortal hubris of ancient Elvhenan, and the rise of the Blood Mages of Tevinter, describe how these mages brought the Blight upon the world and how the First Blight started, about the religious and political response as prophetess Andraste and her husband Maferath declared war against the Tevinter Empire and led an Exalted March against it, changing the Thedas forever. How Andraste's death made her a martyr, allowing her Chantry to take over the whole of Thedas and how the confluence of these events allowed the humans to continue growing in power and led by the Chantry they were able to conquer the elves, destroying their homeland - the Dales. At this point, a new player arrived to the continent - the Qunari, leading to the Qunari Wars. We will also talk about Ferelden and how it became one of the most important states of the continent.

The Treatment of the Grey Wardens is something that always pissed me off. Everyone knows you can’t kill an Archdemon without them, yet people like Vivienne persist in calling them “worthless” or “outdated.” BITCH, THESE GUYS ARE THE ONLY THING STANDING BETWEEN THEDAS AND THE APOCALYPSE! They literally _give up their old lives_ to protect the world. No wives or husbands, no children, nothing a free man might enjoy. And on top of that, they’re condemning themselves to death by doing it regardless of how good they are at fighting. So in short; Thedas is filled with idiots and it probably deserves a good, _loooooong_ blight to teach it the importance of the Wardens. Say, two hundred years. That ought to show em.

@@jonny-b4954 well the reason why Halo sucked is because Hollywoods hag writers want to tell a specific story that they invision but they can never ever get their projects green lit because they are shit and so they come back with a popular named IP that automatically draw in a huge audience to then use as a vessel for that story they wanted to tell at the expense of the actual universe/lore/history/message etc etc only changing very few things to make this skin wearing IP look and somewhat feel like that universe. This trend is not gonna go away because Hollywood is very risk averse and now that Video game Adaptations have shown to draw in huuge audiences we will only see more of this bastardisation of our beloved ip's think Halo, The Witcher, Rings of Power, Kenobi etc, sure we will also get the occasional The Last of Us, HOTD here and there where actual love care and attention were used, but they will be far and few between and lots of our beloved ip's will be butchered in such a way that there will be almost zero chance for us to get a good and well respected version after the shit one scares hollywood execs away from them for a looong time.

@@kyeshayne A fundamental difference between those two and DA is that the latter doesn't mock and overly criticize Faith and Religion or condemn it as inherently illogical and evil. Dragon Age establishes very realistic and nuanced portrayals of Faith and Organized Religion with in-game facts supporting the faiths as more than just words. Then there's the whole Magic angle...Dragon Age portrays a magical system with serious consequences from day one. Where Mages aren't praised or in charge but condemned and ostracized simply for existing in the first place. While in the other two the main heroes are only such because they're added by mages or are inherently magical while the Mages are praised and in some cases directly in charge. Given the very realistic portrayal of how indeed Humans would react to Magic existing and how the Faith isn't portrayed as nonsense but taken seriously are key factors that make it unique and in regards to those two themes better. Witcher is better at moral ambiguity overall examining what even is a monster or evil while asking if they even exist or if humanity is inherently selfish and corrupt, Game of Thrones does a realistic portrayal of medieval politics and nobility.

Even if Bioware isn't the company they once were, they've always been great at worldbuilding. Mass Effect and Metro are the only game series I've bought all of the books for since I wanted to eat up all that lore, DAO is what really got me into fantasy despite loving the LOTR trilogy. I guess I just love the grittiness of the world's of DA, the Witcher, and GOT. The more I listen to the lore of Dragon Age, the more I think the "Old Ones" are simply the Elvenari. There were originally 9, Mythol was murdered, and the dread wolf would have protected himself against the corruption as he caused it with the creation of the veil. Furthermore, he may have even cursed the Evenari into dragon form as punishment for the murder of Mythol. This would even make sense within the rest of the Dragon Age lore. The floating city, or the black city, would have been the fortress of the Dread Wolf. The Tevinter Mages attempted to break into the Black City at the behest of the Old Gods, who are trapped in the Fade. That would have been punished harshly by the Dread Wolf. That would also explain why the old gods are always the arch demons, they are taking their revenge against those that The Dread Wolves defends. The question then would be, why are there physical forms of the old gods on Thedas, and spiritual forms trapped in the Fade? That could have been a result fo the creation of the veil. It separated spirit and physical bodies, so their spirits could still be trapped in the fade and their physical forms trapped on Thedas. Perhaps dragons are the elvenari's natural physical form, that they kept tempered with magic when the veil did not exist? So many questions, but I'm willing to bet we'll get some answers in the Dread Wolf entry up coming. I have not looked into the lore of Dragon Age since I was 16, but I'm really glad I'm getting back into it. Can't wait for answers! Awesome videos by the way!

Wait? Did you really just skip over Ferelden gaining their independence from Orlais? It is one of the most interesting parts of the lore, writers of the series published books about it, so there is not even shortage of material. Loghain was not a Teryn at first. He was only a farmers son, who became the best friend of the exiled prince. What about the rebels escaping from Orlesian occupiers into deep roads and getting help from Grey Wardens, which leads to them getting unbanned from Ferelden, and which is the only reason Ferelden was able to defeat the Blight in record time? No mention of Maric's Rebellion, Arl Eamon, Duncan, Genevieve, The Architect, Alistair, Fiona, FLEMETH? I am going to be so disappointed if you don't make a follow-up video...

I agree, but as they said in the end, fate of Thedas is in player's hands. We learn about mentioned events mostly from games. They also didn't cover Orlais' "modern" problems, Orzammar's recent history etc. This series was clearly meant to promote playing DA ourselves, not to summarize everything we know like f.e. in Witcher's videos. Am glad they did it this way, because we can shape this world in so many different ways, that no one would be satisfied with whatever story, choices and origin we would have been presented. Thats why we love DA games, our main hero in those titles are not Grey Warden, Inquisitor nor Hawke, but Thedas itself

@@Netrofikator Everything up to the start of the first game is actually set in stone, as in canon and not up to player decision. This means all the battles in Ferelden Rebellion including the Battle of River Dane and Siege of Denerim could have been included in the video.

Also, bits and pieces of information from the games about the rebellion doesnt paint a complete picture, thats why the books were written. And since the whole point of these videos is to understand the universe without reading the books...

I might be wrong but i think the Templars were a new order founded by the Chantry and the Inquisition of old transitioned into The Seekers instead. At least according to Inquisitor Ameridan and Cassandra respectively. Also Emperor Kordilius and Inquisitor Ameridan were friends. Halamshiral only became isolationist after Ameridan's disappearance.

Nope the Templars where from the First Inquisiton as well (it is where they got their logo while the Seekers took the eye.) Aslo the Dales where Isolationist before Ameridan disappeared as they didn't want human Influence.

I really enjoyed this. As far as I can tell, it is very accurate and well detailed. But I do have one criticism. The pronunciations of various terms and names. The Qunari who landed in Par Vollen, or really the Qunari anywhere, are absolutely *not* “descendants” of the Kossith who had a colony in the Korkari Wilds. The latter were either fleeing the spread of the Qun, or altogether predated its existence, and they were wiped out to a man - with some of their women being taken as Broodmothers for the ogres amongst the Darkspawn. They are the same base race, yes. But they are not the same culture, and those who follow the Qun are not descended from those who died in the Wilds.

Incredibly well done! I love these "History before the games" concepts. Especially with RPGs I like knowing a bit about the world before diving in. This allows me to develop a story for my character that is grounded in the game world. It also allows me to feel like my character exists within the world, as they have a general understanding of history. For example, it doesn't make sense for a Human Noble in Dragon Age Origins to be oblivious to major historical events and concepts like what a Teryn and the political structure of Ferelden is.

With them already try their hand in making the animated series like Dragon Age Absolution. Now I kinda want to see something more epic... Something that's not just a focus on group(s) of event(s) here and there... But something Grand. With so much lore that was shown here, They should be able to make the stuff that's not only cannon and didn't have significant complication(s) that would effected the games but also enhance the overall series even more. For example... - Something like... "Thedas through Times", A series of important chain of events that telling story of the history of Thedas like the video here. - One of (or even all) the story of the Blights before the fifth. You know... Wars against the Darkspawn, Politics of uniting people to fight for great cause, The Rise of the Wardens, etc. - The life of the key figure of Thedas history. Hessarian, Shartan, Kordillus Drakon, Caspar Pentaghast, Asha Campana, Calenhad Theirin and so on. Any one of these people life story could be make in such a epic series if done right. In short, I really do hope they put their vast sum of materiel of lore especially those epic parts to use more...

Obsidian presented Pillars of Eternity with some great story telling but Dragon Age is an epic lore that borrows influence from Tolkien and the once proud Roman Empire. For all our sake I hope the next installment keeps and put the lore on the forefront. I dont want to see real life agenda from sexism to our current politicsl climates. There so many objectives that sadly from Dragon Age 2 on the deva had to mix their agenda with whats suppose to be a fantastical stories.
