+WrittenInShadow nah... this game was not made to be used with friendly fire on, they only made that option because of Dragon Age Origins fans, I tried to play with it but it was impossible, the warriors skills were destroying my rogue but that is possible to solve with micromanagement but it is impossible to micromanagement your team because of the action based combat, your rogue is always moving.

A good build to try is a fire/necro combo. It's focused around immolate/flame wall, and walking bomb. Throw in the low mqna damage bonus of the storm tree, fire mine when you have the mana and want a big hit. It's mainly about keeping immolate and walking bomb active on the target while spamming the staff. You won't see huge numbers other than the occasional fire mine but it's all about the mostly consistant DPS, or it can be a multitasker. DoT one baddy up, and fire mine the other, or whatever. :D

I see you went with chain lightning over barrage. Offensively its better but i recommend everyone playing a mage to try this. Everyone knows guard on hit is one of the best masterworks, as it gives guard to mages for every hit with their staff, and seeing as mages attack more frequently with their staff, and don't produce guard in their tree, its exceptionally powerful defensively. this is where barrage works its magic. barrage launches something like 10-20 staff strikes, thus if you have guard on hit 4, you will nearly fill your mage's guard meter with one single barrage spell. its sick, and worth having on every mage.

been getting back into Inquisition lately, and been dipping back to these videos for some build ideas (partly just ideas, because of changes/tweaks). plus, I realized I never ACTUALLY played through to story finish... been having a HELL of a time with my Rift Mage Inquisitor. playing as a Qunari/Vashoth Inq, and the whole weakening thing fit the theme of a Vashoth mercenary mage SO well. plus, the visual aspect of this sort of balanced elemental build is GLORIOUS. Sluggish, weakened enemies, good mix of fire, ice, and lightning blasting across the field of battle, plus the Veil spells, all coming from a big and tall, horned Archmage hanging in the back.

ultimateninjaboi same here! just re downloaded it and started today. never did finish story, doing the rift mage, any advice on order to obtain skills? or does it really matter?
@ultimateninjaboi
@ultimateninjaboi 7 жыл бұрын
I mean, if you're playing on the lowest difficulty, and even second lowest, to some extent, it really won't matter. And while i can't really give any advice for the hardest difficulty, (as i don't play it, really) i found myself, on second highest, taking Chain Lightning, Barrier, and the threat reduction passive when I respecced at Haven. After that, I snagged Winter's Grasp, and the upgrade to Chain Lightning. After that, I kinda focused on the Inferno and Storm lines for a bit. I'd say snag Winter's Stillness earlier if you find yourself running out of mana more than you'd really like, but i saved it for a bit. Once I had access to Rift Mage skills, I heavily focused on them, shoring up the rest of the trees based on what I needed, including dipping into the Spirit line. Though, if you're having some issues with party survivability, you can dip into Spirit earlier, for better barriers. Really, you can kind of go with what you need, when you need it for many of the later skills. But, I will say a few "musts." Chain Lighting. Get it as early as you can, and definitely upgrade it sooner, rather than later. That skill is your best friend. Second, do not take Chaotic Focus until you've finished getting all the upgrades/boosts to your Barrier skill from the Spirit tree that you want. I was having issues with it, when I just had the basic level of Barrier. Otherwise, I'd say it's fairly flexible. Really, as long as you have upgraded Chain Lightning, and are at least close to having Fire Rune and Static Cage before you start heavily investing in Rift Mage, you'll be fine.

Great builds. I've been struggling a bit with builds as of late. I promised myself I wasn't going to search online for my class builds, but I was unsatisfied with my own selections. Great vid and thanks. In my first play through I went rift mage. Setup was a bit diff. I did notice that High dragons and most main bosses are immune to almost all rift spells making it useless against those type of targets. I went KE on my second play through and can solo all encounters. Way OP and boring. Rift mage is fun though against all but dragons and bosses.

"you can get huge numbers for fire mine using chaotic focus" yup. using the Heart of Rage staff I averaged over 10k. averaged. crits were over 20k on enemies weak to fire, and that was before any specialization or even getting to skyhold. would highly recommend a second mage in your party to trade barrier spells with so you can keep your barrier up because your spells will suck it dry very quickly. This is kind of a glass cannon type of skill. you will need to do a bit more micromanaging of your position as you are using your barrier mostly for offense instead of defense. Also recommend keeping fadestep (with the mana regeneration upgrade) on your skill bar. boost your crit chance and willpower with any items you can. If you can't find Heart of Rage (in the early game, it's a completely very very rare random drop) then go with staff of lovias (can get from the black emporium DLC, which is free). your damage won't be as high with lovias, but your cooldowns will be nearly irrelevant with all the crits.

If you're going to do an Assassin Archer I have a combo that works wonders especially against all dragons/any large targets What you do is you pick up the 10 stamina per crit passive along with the auto crit from stealth, pick up stealth as a skill, leaping shot, mark of death, and hidden blades+upgrade... In this order you do this... Mark of death (Make sure you stand right next to the enemy here) Stealth Leaping Shot (If the 12 shots of this connect thats 120 stamina returned and its maxed out again) Hidden Blades From there you can continue spamming skills or active Mark again and proc the bonus damage On my weapon i had 10% chance to proc hidden blades as a masterwork and with 12 hits from leaping shot and 9 from hidden blades this can proc so many times

Hi Kinetic. I know you have probably moved on to others games now but what would you suggest as the best team for closing rifts? I am an dual wield assassin. i think Cassandra is a give in and Sera always a good bet. But Which mage would be better for rifts? Would it be better 2 mages and no acrchers? I am level 15 switch the game to hard beat the first two dragons but in level 15 rift i didnt last long when i tried with blackwall sera and Dorian.

Hey, love your videos and love the Rift Mage specialization! So glad you did a video about it. Question, though, I noticed in your gameplay demonstration that Solas was the only Mage in your party and you didn't include Barrier in your Rift Mage build. I tried something similar and found that my party members were taking a lot more damage than I'm used to seeing. Do you have any specific tips for party composition/behaviors when fielding a Rift Mage with no Barrier?

Both my Warriors are pretty stacked (maybe not in this vid) with Guard generating abilities. And I have my other ranged fighters set to Follow themselves, as seen in this video Party, Tactics and Behaviors Guide! kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2rFk6B-aqiMpLc

When you have the points, like 15-20, just unlock everything, minus Stonestrike upgrade, Veil Strike upgrade, and Counterstrike for Rift mage. Ignore Winter for now. Focus on unlocking the Storm and Inferno, then get the rest of Rift Mage and then Winter skills.

Just got Dragon age & I'm finding your builds massively helpful, esp the mage builds. Do you ever control your own character? & could you let the CPU control your rift mage & it will have the same effect as when you're in control of it? I'm wondering should I control Vivienne as I've always played my own character. Cheers

I really love the sheer raw power of the Rift Mage, what strategy would you suggest in party building? I'm also playing on Nightmare difficulty and with friendly-fire on just to amp up on the difficulty. Any tips on there too? lol
