I am so in love with the voice of Bryony Corrigan's Rook. As a northerner I appreciated hearing the northern accent. Sadly partially in thanks to GoT Wildlings northern accents tend to be given to similar characters these days. I mean DAI did it too with JoH and the Avvar. Mind you I love the Avvar but it is nice when a protag gets a northern accent.

I get it, I get a similar feeling when characters who aren't rich or are made to be dumb hicks get a real hard southern accent. And it's always the same type of twang, at most you'll get a ya'll in dialect.

Does the game give you anything to help explain how Rook became Varric's 2nd in command? Like a codex entry or a flashback? While I love the energy and graphics in this scene, it doesn't do much to set up the PC's motivations for joining in on this fight, and being so high up the chain of command to boot.

@@NoodlesDaCat I think it's safe to assume how they met from those backgrounds and the ending of Inquisition - Rook stood out to Varric after the big thing you do in your background and we know the Inquisition is using people that they think are notable/skilled to stop Solas. The same way we are "collecting" people in the world, Varric "collected" us. I bet we will also see in the game when we play it ourselves what our relationship to varric is, similar to how its been done in the past - through stories, cutscenes, etc

They’ll probably give you some dialogue at some point that will let the players choose the finer details of Rook’s motivations and upbringing. Plus I don’t find it very strange that Rook is his second-in-command. There’s a grand total of three people in Varric’s posse at the moment if you include Varric, and between Rook and Harding, Rook has more leadership material based on the various backgrounds.

i’m so sad to say but Varric’s narration is really giving Flynn Rider’s “this is the story of how i died” opening in Tangled. it feels much more tired than in DA2, like he’s more mournful and less reminiscent. 🥲

ME:A sadly didn't have a lot of time for motion capture work. that old barfight was nearly entirely keyframed by hand. DA:TVG on the other hand. what you just saw was entirely motion captured as will be the case for nearly every cinematic sequence

bioware for a long time had to make do with hand animated keyframed sequences because motion capture is expensive, hence why in older titles lots of animations get reused. it seems there was a much bigger mo-cap budget this time around. cause that was the most Fluid animation sequence I've ever seen

Interesting that the game starts with Rook already part of Varric and Lace's group even thought Veilguard happens basically almost right after The Missing, so there's a very short missing part between the comic and the game in which Rook meats the two. I assume then that they were already in the city then, which for a Shadow Dragon Rook makes sense, I wonder why other Rooks are in Minrathous tho, the background texts only explain why they left their faction.

What is the significance of "Purple Rook"?

“purple Hawke” was what fans called a Hawke player character in Dragon Age 2 that primarily chose the sarcastic dialogue options (the laughing mask looking one), and it was shaded purple in DA2. everybody loves sarcastic or “purple” Hawke, so we’re excited to see the return of the symbol and super sarcastic quips in Veilguard for Rook :)

The usual dialogue choice done by the players that later affect how Hawke usually speaks, in DA 2. Red Hawke is aggressive. Blue Hawke is Diplomatic. Purple is Sarcastic. Rook in this is the protagonist, and its believed that it'll follow the same rules as DA 2. If you do enough Purple dialogue options, Rook would end up being more sarcastic.

I love the way they started the recap just like in Dragon Age 2 with Varric narrating. I also really love the voice you chose for Rook. That is definitely the one I will be using in my play through. I always liked the British voices more for some reason. I heard the American female voice in another video, and I just did not like it. Not like the voice in this video, which I really like. I think the voice in English sounds much harsher whereas the voice in this video is much softer sounding which I like way more.
