Hey its Yamcha tips! Timestamps in the vid description and I hope I didn't get too rambly about wolf fang fist but it definitely needed its own section as its his absolute most key mixup tool.

rooflemonger Have you seen Leffens updated tier list? Very different from yours, including Yamcha being mid-high tier and Majin Buu (fat) low-high. Not sure I agree with a lot of his assessments, and he seems to rate based on the character being on a team that a player just happened to use to win/place high in a tournament. It would be nice to get more feedback from pros other than whos best/broken, so Idk if his reflects other pros opinions.

PathBeyondTheDark I just watched Leffens tier list. Very surprised where Yamcha and Tien ended up. Piccolo as well.
@samsonfgc34726 жыл бұрын
Based on what leffen was saying, I think part of it is the character's synergy with cell and/or kid buu. If you can use either or both of them on the same team with that character, that character's overall potential is going to be way better than other characters despite the others characters being "better" in every other aspect than team comp because your overall effectiveness would be lowered a lot more for not picking cell than it would be raised by not picking fat buu for example. Therefore, fat buu is a better character overall because he can use cell/kid buu as a crutch for his own weaknesses. He didn't use this example and I don't know enough to say if the above example is true, but I'm fairly sure this was the general thought process for considering the characters. tl;dr Because of the fact outside of the bottomest bottom tiers and topest top tiers this game seems pretty balanced, being able to synergize with the top tiers is a giant boon to a character's overall potential and that might be enough to drag some characters out of low tier and into high tier.

Yamcha’s Level 3 in the corner causes a very small wall bounce at the end of it, which causes a very small gap between the enemy and the corner. If you IAD H after the hard kncockdown, you can actually steal the corner and cross them up, which adds another layer to his oki. After the Level 3, if you end up in front of the enemy after the IAD H instead of crossing up it’s also a safe jump. The second hit of his auto combo also pulls the enemy a bit closer to you in the corner even on block, so in Sparking you can get the same results by doing 5LL > IAD H in a blockstring.

@Neogears13126 жыл бұрын
julianruirio an amazing mix up with yamcha is a tag in spirit ball. If you cause a towards yamcha slide and medium wolf fang fist you actually teleport where you started aka you double cross them up. (I think it’s because the slide makes them face away during tag spirit ball but all i know is I always get it from tagging from Broly goku 16 and cell super so I’m not certain it works with every super)

Lord Dio! I've experienced this double crossup while messing with the cross-up dive kick. It wasn't consistent but it happened quite a few times. Nice bit of tech though.
@Neogears13126 жыл бұрын
Jerry I find it to be consistent when done the way I described. I knew of the dive kick variant but frankly the dive kick is overall kinda bad. No set ups are really worth setting up the move for.
@DeepCDiva6 жыл бұрын
Might be a little too heavy on the mindgames but after the opponent blocks WFF and you cross-up with S; if u time an assist correctly before the crossup finishes, the opponent will be in blockstun facing away from you. You can then delay medium WFF, so Yamcha does the teleport animation, but does NOT switch sides. Opens some interesting mix-up options and is great to shake things up in case the opponent is reading you well.

Great video as usual Roof. Been playing Lord Yamcha since day 1 and am glad he is finally getting some love. A couple things I didn't see mentioned in the video that have come in handy for me as someone who uses him for more than just his assist. Stand Heavy - First it is a natural sparking blast counter due to the backflip, so if you have an enemy panicking its easy to catch them with it after a lvl 3 HKD. Also you can vanish at any point during the stand heavy animation before it connects, which allows it to be used as a sort of feint/bait for reversals, made extra powerful in sparking as it can lead to a full combo. In addition it causes a proper wallbounce in the corner so a well timed 2M or 5L can extend a combo started off of it. Also in the corner unlike most characters is that a super dash after his 2H will connect even if the smash property is already spent, which is nice. Dive Kick - in addition to its uses mentioned in the video it is exceptional as a means of extending combos with vanish or an assist. with correct timing it can be used after a 2H launcher into LM jc LM 2H and the light gale claws during the descent which can be extended with vanish into one of his highest damage solo combos, and knowing his high damage combo routes (he has a few gated behind heavy meter usage) is important as he is generally a low damage character. EX Wolf Fang cancel - you can actually do the cancel into heavy from the light version as well, it just has a bit stricter timing to get it out before the light WFF becomes active. The EX hit is also an unscaled starter similar to medium attacks, making it one of his best means of starting combos in terms of damage output. Spirit Ball - Something I don't think anyone has every pointed out is that you can under no circumstances hit 2 spirit balls in the same combo, Even Vegeta assist doesn't facilitate this as the ball just passes right through the enemy. Not particularly important but is a unique property of the move that I haven't seen touched upon. It is also one of the only lvl 1 supers that causes a sliding knockdown, and possibly the only one that actually allows Oki pressure afterwards, which is part of why it scales as badly as it does. Stand Medium - on one hand it works as a frame trap against newer players who mash alot. But on the other it is just an invitation to more experienced players to raw lvl 3 or DP you in the face. I kinda hate this normal TBH... That was a bit more than I thought it would be and there are a couple of other inconsequential things that could be mentioned but meh...

That safe tag in thing I didn't even consider. I can see it being a great option with Tien. Great tips. Although I prefer using his WFF mix-ups with assists to keep the cross-up follow up safe and maintain pressure. I see alot of ppl using him as an anchor, but you can mash out of alot of his stuff. Call an assist during the medium WFF follow-up, cross through with S (you don't actually have to press forward) and you will be plus. I'm using Tien and Krillin so it's not like my assists are amazing lol (well Tiens is pretty damn good). Still even with them, it just keeps ppl guessing and blocking.

honestly i think yamcha is pretty good on point, he's a massive meter battery and his play style really favors constant tagging so he can effectively fund someone elses combo. still prefer him on second or third but he's good regardless of position.
@viceanterra36 жыл бұрын
Lord Dio! I use him on point for now but I don't think he's a great anchor cause of everything you just mentioned. Especially cause WFF is Soooooo much better when you have assist.

Mikey France You can always swap him out to take advantage of his assists. I plan on running him on the second slot. The only reason I don't have him on anchor is cause you can easily mash out of many of the WFF options.

Jerry I usually have him second but he ends up as the anchor because of the pressure and sparking.

Another interesting fact about Yamcha's level 3 three is that when you are in the corner you can get a cross-up on the opponent. If the opponent isn't aware of this they can get caught pretty easily, but it is risky.

Dunno if its too late, but i think it should be mentioned that you have time between the 3 parts of wff that you DEFINITLY should use, because spamming the 3 parts will end in cancelling and doing a bit less damage. I literally JUST found this out: you know the whole tag-in-during-the-kicks thing you can do with Yamcha? If you're doing the third auto combo light attack with Tien, when he's doing that punch barrage you can tag in someone else and he'll still keep doing the punches as the other guy comes in!
@edgardopaulocunanan59306 жыл бұрын
One thing I'd like to add about the ex wolf gale or whatever that spinning special move is called. If you do it on the ground and it's blocked, you can follow up with an air normal or air dash. Unfortunately, there is enough of a gap for a 2H. Unless of course combined with an assist.
@mahutahoerarasmith6 жыл бұрын
Found this channel through reddit. Big fan of your work.
@samsonfgc34726 жыл бұрын
Something about the crossup mid wff is that if you have a good combo assist like tien, you can drop the assist down after the light followup or something and crossup to the other side and do nothing. If they block the assist, its still your turn. if they don't, its combo time. Its not really necessary, due to yamcha's solo crossup stuff, but it is another interesting crossup gimmick in your toolbelt.
@samsonfgc34726 жыл бұрын
Example inputs would be 236L>L>A>S the timing is fairly strict on the last two, you want to hit them almost simultaneously because there's a window after the crossup where you HAVE to do a followup so you can't do anything in that window if you want a combo followup.
@jamesstaton32656 жыл бұрын
Basically, Wolf Fang Fist is what makes Yamcha a character. Without it, he is mostly nothing. I'm still waffling on a third character to complement 21 and The Beer Buddy, as Zamasu was a wash, and I'm just not really feeling Vegito with those two. Had initially dismissed Yamcha, but that may require some reconsideration. He's got tricky stuff, and I like tricky. The assist is a bonus.

practically every fighting game dev has ignored the value of tutorials and teaching tech properties, especially the japanese devs. They'll implement casual-friendly mechanics like auto combos and input leniency but they forget to entice those players further with the promise of depth (which is there but not visible beyond youtube/tournaments)
