GT is wildly underrated. The thing I love best about the ending is that Goku finally got the world he always wanted to see: one that isn't constantly under threat from one unstoppable force or another, where people have more or less chosen peace, and where martial arts tournaments are once more for the love of the sport rather than life-or-death battles. Goku got to see that the world finally made it to that point, and he can leave knowing that it doesn't need him or anyone like him. There's an aspect of freedom in that to be sure; but I imagine Goku sees it more as, the earth is safe and that's what matters.

What I like about SS4 is that it is literally a physical mutated transformation. Just like the Great Ape form where they completely change. SS1-2 it's just a hair color change along with SS3 with just a loss of eye brows but SS4 looks like a humanoid Ape mutation and the user also appears "in control" compared to the Great Ape. It's a uniquely creative design which imo through its own appearance displays the peak of Saiyan power.

I like to think that the shadow dragons are punishers. Wether if they spare the characters intentionally or not, they're kept alive in order to be pummeled for their sins over abusing the dragon balls. Arguibly, nobody used the dragon balls as much as the Z warriors, it's "logical" for them to suffer the most of consequences. That makes GT ending even more satisfying, while the whole gang is confronted with the mistakes they comitted, Goku also receives the ultimate redemption and is able to ascend between the realms.

It's a great ending, easily the best thing in GT. However, it really doesn't mean much, it's a pretty low bar. Even in this video analisys Seth claiming that Goku is the rappresentation of Freedom really comes out of nowhere. Goku really doesn't rappresent freedom in Dragon Ball, it's a concept that makes sense only when applied to like the first chapter in the OG and MAYBE the Frieza arc, but that's really pushing it. Goku has rappresented different concepts in DB, but those that fit him best are perseverance, determination and thrill. At moments self acceptance was the key, at other times classism was (mainly Saiyan and Frieza saga), at others it showed the importance of mentorhood (mainly Boo arc, but that arc is an absolute mess and it's completely dropped). But Freedom? Maybe in some specific spot but it really isn't character identifying trait This felt like Seth pushing something onto the GT story.

One of the great aspects of GT is how the power ceiling is established with Baby (SSJ4) and beyond that we just know there's not much else to do other than smart usage of the available skills and powers the sayans have at their disposal. Which makes a whole lot of sense, and leads to things feeling somewhat real and having a sense of tangibility. Because of this, there's also more unpredictability, as "getting a new form to beat new foe" isn't in the cards. One other amazing thing are the poetic undertones of the SSJ4 resembling a monkey, referring back to Sun Wukong's journey to the west, and drawing those symbolic parallels of "Monkey VS Dragon" that nourished Dragon Ball for so long. I wish GT had continued for one extra arc, where Piccolo would have received some sort of power up (either warrior like or sage like) and thus unravelling a final catharsis for the whole story. Possibly with Gohan as a protagonist, as he had always been meant to be the vanguard of a new, final arc that would wrap everything about the series, and set the tone for a future which would not be told (stories always have to end). There's so much that could have been done with this narrative, but writers just love to *cheapen* everything out. In its current iteration (Super), Dragon Ball resembles a cheap western Marvel/DC shtick, which is meant to never really end, and to have characters become static, and permastuck in "their thing" (same old habits, same old personality, same old shtick, endless repetition of the same patterns for all eternity), as the stories get milked forever.

Also, the Shadow Dragon arc is quite possibly my favorite arc in Dragonball. As you alluded to, Seth, the Shadow Dragons never really seemed concerned with getting revenge for misusing the Dragon Balls, but instead to test Goku's resolve and his "worthiness" of ascension, something that is very common in Eastern mythology. Goku has a stronger connection to the Dragon Balls than anyone in the series despite all the people who coveted them above all else. The 4-star ball especially is essentially the physical manifestation of who Goku is fundamentally as a person, and their incessant use of the balls represented Goku's inability to let things go whether it be a friend's death or the idea that evil may triumph over him. But in order to defeat the Shadow Dragons, Goku had to let it go. He had to let it all go. Goku's Spirit Bomb was exactly that: his spirit, his hopes, dreams, desires, love for his friends and family, basically the very essence of himself as a mortal. When Goku let go of that Spirit Bomb and by extension all the feelings and emotions that would cause someone to seek out the Dragon Balls, he passed the test and became worthy.

“The true quality” The truth is that GT is a generally awful story. Pacing is garbage, many boring and underwhelming story beats, character development is pretty much nonexistent for most characters, no one outside of Goku (and Vegeta at the very end) contributes anything relevant to the major fights, and a good portion of the fights are choreographed really poorly. Entire final battle Syn was like evil version of Goku, letting his opponents power up, holding back, actually trying to stop enemy when he realises they're about to turn into something much stronger. Theory that Syn couldn't hurt Goku at the end also makes a lot of sense. Syn's abilities were using Evil and negativity. Goku at the time of throwing genki had zero evil in him, so Syn couldn't hurt him at all.

Something that makes me happy is that GT is recently getting more praised and analyzed deeply, instead of being harshly judged as the black sheep of the DB franchise, it's actually a good show and I will fight people over it, yes it has its flaws (just like Z and DEFINITELY like Super) but that ending to me it's one of the best things ever done with the name DB in it. It's not just a Disney type of ending and they lived happily ever after...it's actually a deep and profound ending that no one exactly know til this day what it means.

This, though I do wish they focused more on a lot of concepts and gave more character development. I'd love to see more of Pan actively becoming the new protagonist, but still being far behind the heights Goku and Co are at. What I originally wanted Boruto to be tbh. Naruto being the guy for the big threats and being a path Boruto can choose to follow and he chooses it and gets powerful, but through his development starts to go his own route. That's what Pan should be.

I’ve only watch GT in Japanese and I’ve been so confused about all the hate this whole time. I watched Dragon Ball before DBZ so I wasn’t under the impression that it was supposed to be fighting all the time. For me. GT was the natural next step if you were to start from the beginning beginning. - Dragon Ball set up the characters and universe. - DBZ brought the action and drama. - GT expanded the universe and was setting up for the future. - Super brings us back to the action. - Daima feels like it will be a mixture of the two. Overall, I think the progression has been great. Alternating between the two types. And of course she got the movies and games in there that do not like to stick with the main universe lol. So being forced to make super go back in time and kind of replace GT doesn’t really phase me after the insanity of the movies. Everyone is like it’s not canon. I’m just like it makes more sense than Zelda and that’s all we can really ask of the Japanese, lol I will forever love and enjoy GT!

28:16 you can just argue that it has something to do with 17 asking 16 about why did he go back to human based creations despite working constantly on nothing based creations. Remember 17 was the first human-based artificial Human After 16. Which gives us a lot more reason to believe he had bigger plans for him since he wanted to change it up. Remember the Eternal energy models applies to 18 on below. So he didn't go human-based just for that. He went human based for something else which in Dragon Ball GT is Super 17.

GT is one of those stories that have a special place in my heart even though they weren't generally well received, either because of the acting, the character arcs, or the overall message the story is trying to convey. Some others being the Amazing Spider-Man movies, Star Wars prequels, and Batman V Superman. Like in each of those, I wish they could have done something differently, and in the case of GT, it was the ending. It never really sat right with me how Goku basically leaves everyone behind yet again, for the final time without even saying goodbye to Chi-Chi. Imo the ending could've been made better if it was just Shenron who left before restoring Goku back to an adult. All the characters that the Dragon Balls helped in some way would join him on one last flight (with Goku on the Nimbus) until the very end before he leaves this world, and through the eyes of the audience, saying goodbye to the character that was at the heart of the series even though he didn't make many appearances.

Thank you for exploring GT, no matter what people say about GT I've always thought that it was most acomplished. Why? Because the series that once relied on toriyama tried creating their own show, while a failure... It's not to say they didn't learn anything and didn't succeed in some form. Gt has and will always be a Grand tour and for the staff it was reflecting their selves with the final arc. Over reliance on something and by some merit overcoming it all. One of the most notable and important things about Syn/Omega shenron that stood out to me is that throughout the fight he seems to be trying to break Goku's and everyone else's spirits . Other than a few points in those fights it's clear that he could've wiped everyone out in a flash if he wanted to , the reaction on Nouva not killing and " apparently , i couldn't restrain my power enough " right after starting the fight by charging ki and destroying a significant part of the city makes clear that the writers didn't somehow manage to overlook what was going on with powerscaling in all this , Syn had been restraining himself from the start . Physically it was just way too easy for him but not as much mentally , so he was trying to break them mentally before delivering the final punishment . Even later he told Goku to rest easy , " release the burden from your shoulders , pleasant feelings await you in heaven " , then Goku managed to restrain him and tried to do the final explosion technique Vegeta did on Buu , cuz he had JUST managed to catch Omega with a dragon fist and destroyed his body , and it turned out Omega could regenerate from almost nothing like Buu . " This is the only thing left i can do , if this doesn't work , then i'm sorry but you'll have to give up hope " was his inner monologue , he didn't want to count on it but he had to and was going to give it his all if Vegeta didn't stop him , the irony in Vegeta being the one who stops him though , cuz it didn't really work on Buu and Vegeta was like damn bro you really think it's gonna work ? I really like some of these scenes with Goku's stoic attitude , he admits he can't think of any way to defeat the opponent but keeps going , he said " you'll have to give up hope if this doesn't work " but you know he'd still try his best to defeat Omega if they both survived that explosion , like in baby arc he kept bluffing when he had almost no power and his body was aching just to buy some more time and think of some way to defeat Baby , the goofy moments are always awesome . Goku seems perfect for the ending of the series , i would like other characters to have some more inclusion and do more cool stuff in fights after baby arc but can't deny a bunch of character moments from this series in overall are a treat and i think they did most of the personalities that i care about well.

@Crow_III2 жыл бұрын
A very well-done analysis of GT without the nostalgia lenses and without going into it with a negative perspective like so many others. I feel many others who criticize GT usually are pretty surface level with what they wanted from the show. This breakdown does really well into looking into the overarching themes and how it fits into the overall franchise. GT to me still feels more organic to the progression of the storyline than Super does 🤷♀ The concept of going back to the Oozaru and with the SSJ4 form being the epitome of the Saiyan race just makes too much sense and is by far better than SSJ Blue. As well as the Shadow dragons and making the show about the Dragon Balls again is such a 10/10 concept to end the series and a complete full circle moment for the franchise. And yes, the finale/final episode is great. Only a few gripes with it but it's so good especially if you grew up watching the entire series. Again, the show has its flaws for sure, but the main themes and consistencies that you pointed out with the individual characters I think overtake those flaws in the bigger picture.

What surprises me is that Broly wasn't even acknowledged aside a quick visual cameo in the background somewhere during that whole thing I remember watching a video where Broly being in the background was a thing during this GT Arc, Im pretty sure but to error is human so there's a percentage that I may be misremembering something. But yeah Raditz is part of the entourage surprisingly enough. I mean he's like the Yamcha of the Saiyan race. Personally though I always wanted Radtiz to come to the realization while fighting Goku that his brother is all the family he's got left and had a change of heart choosing family over Frieza. Because if I we're Raditz why in the hell would I remain loyal to the sadistic genocidal tyrant that wiped out my race and planet? Literally makes too much sense to just immediately show up at Kame House, turn off the transmitting signal from the scouter and lay it all out for the Z Fighters, explaining the eventual overthrowing of Frieza, and wishing Goku the mythical wish of immortality we always kept hearing about throughout the series and had a much different timeline to finagle around with. What would SSJ3 Raditz look like? Probably like cousin It from the Addams Family but with Raditz hair instead of straight.

even though i thought it was easily as flawed as it is great i’ve been team GT since the fansubs in ‘98, and i always felt like i understood the show better than anybody. but you’ve made me realize that i totally misunderstood the dark dragon ball arc and really the whole “point” of the franchise’s conclusion. beautifully done. all those things about the arc that i disliked were actually deliberate plot points building to an “ascension” i somehow managed to miss… thanks to you, i feel like it’s not up for debate anymore - GT is my favorite. yeah, the interstellar arc and super 17 arc were wasted potential, but the bebi arc is a masterpiece (better than buu arc, better than some DB arcs) and now i see the real beauty in the final arc…and everybody knows episode 64 is perfect. super may be the only series it objectively beats, but still, it’s my favorite :’)

The ending of GT always got me teary eyed or straight up crying. Especially in the dub as he's floating away, he calls "NIMBUS!!!!" That always got me....

I think Super 17 should be a future transformation for android 17 in the dragon ball super timeline, but without the fusion. Something 17 attains on his own like Vegeta with SS God.
