It’s why I love Fairy Tail filler. It’s typically two episodes long and they take place in-between arcs, and it’s a great way to watch the characters unwind and live out their lives before the next big arc, usually foreshadowed at the end of the last filler episode.

Toshiki Inoue is perhaps the most unhinged writer in all of tokusatsu. His most iconic characters are a psychopathic serial killer and a manipulative sociopath who's supposed to be a superhero; both are from a superhero franchise made for children and selling toys. The fact that he used to work on Dragon Ball is a bit of a surprise, but not weird considering how long he's worked in Toei.

I enjoyed the heavenly training and wedding dress "arcs" while blind-watching OG Dragon Ball during the pandemic that I legit had no idea they were filler until a friend told me about it later. They felt so naturally-spliced into the story of the canon. Great stuff and happy you enjoyed them almost as much as I did. Now if only Chi-Chi got respect like this in the series in the modern day...

Same! I had no idea those two arcs were filler until a few years ago, when I went back for a rewatch and was more intimately familiar with that was in the manga. Personally, I'd still headcannon them in to the story regardless. They do so much to flesh out those particular chapters of Goku's journey (I mean, it's insane that their wedding really wasn't shown in the manga looking back, not even as an epilogue).

I think the OG Dragonball Anime in general did a really good job incorporating filler because, 1)none of it is too long, & 2) most if not all the filler fit naturally within the story. After watching the anime one of the only things I thought could be filler was the Dr.Slump crossover, and It was a surprised that was actually in the manga.

man I wish the series kept THAT Chi-Chi, not only was the jump to Z a bit of a whiplash, but also it was just sad and painful at times seeing her straight up being just an annoyed wife until like the 3/4 of the Cell Saga The Super kinda returned to the annoyed Chi-Chi while occasionally trying to balance it out but it still is kinda sad how we lost their relation and all the 2 had.

This is why, funny enough I love dragon ball super filler With the exception of the hit thing all the filler is slice of life and comedy, and it plays to it benefits as non canon material it has no ability to change the characters or the plot, but they do have the ability to make you see other sides of the characters like Goku taking care of Pan, or he just walking around and working as a farmer, it's a thing that the manga or the canon will not touch, and that the anime can totally use to it's advantage

The gourd and the fan are both allusions to the original journey to the west. The gourd originally belonged the twin demons Gold and Silver, except it only sucked up people that answered, not people that didn't. The fan is even more interesting because the person who originally had it was the Ox King's wife, the Iron Fan Princess.

You didn't mention one of the best things about Popo's training. At the end of the filler, Goku is still a complete novice at sensing Ki and all of his struggling has amounted to almost nothing. Then, when the manga plot returns after the time-skip, Goku can sense his buddies Ki before they even arrive. It's such a great blink and you miss it moment to show how much he has improved before he even steps into the ring.

I agree! It made that part of Goku's journey feel like a unique challenge that differed from the training arcs we would normally see. @brodievickers7158 Having a strong resolve to take a risk like that is fine and all but it's not like he made a huge choice in the manga. It was either die to Piccolo knowing you're too weak or risk dying to poison but have a chance at being strong enough. It didn't offer much in the way of character for Goku and just conveniently unlocked his potential. At least the show built to this choice more with the journey and tested his resolve by offering him an easier way out.

It's nice to see the characters interact in low stake scenarios outside the main plot for the stakes to matter we have to care about the characters enough to want to see them be happy and if they are successful in that it would be wrong to not give the audience at least some scenes every now and then where we can just enjoy the time with the characters. Seeing characters outside of the plot is like seeing your friends outside of work/school.

@@GAHAHAHH And that is precisely why people like the very last Z Filler episode, being the party at Bulma's that Goku is late for because he's trying to help some baby dinosaurs, the characters worked hard during the arc to stop Buu and now they deserve just a chance to relax, hang out, and enjoy each others company, as well as have some fun interactions, and we the audience deserve a chance to relax and be happy for them and enjoy the fun little show that isn't related to the plot.

Toshiki Inoue is (in)famous in the Tokusatsu circles for his work on the Kamen Rider and Super Sentai series. He either writes well loved and fan favorite seasons like Faiz and Jetman or makes work that are.... divisive at best, like the latter half of Hibiki or the Faiz light novel . I love his work for how he is able to flesh out his characters and making even some of the biggest jerks somewhat likeable (or at least you love to hate them). But when its clear he doesn't really care too much about the material, you get a bunch of just weird shit happening. As much as people love Faiz (like I do) no one is going to defend the story or the ending of it. You're either going to get home runs or absolute misses with Inoue and I wouldn't have it any other way. Donbrothers, his latest work is also one of my personal favorites of his but its also so ludicrous and insane but you get a clear feeling of him loving writing every second of it. I would honestly recommend his work in toku if you like character focused stuff. Although I do have to state that if you hate the dramatic irony of characters not talking things out over what is usually just a big misunderstanding for the majority of the season you will HATE his shit.

I think that in the case of the Dragon Ball franchise it's not so bad (Garlic Jr. is the worst and isn't exactly horrendous by general anime standards), however there's some anime that just has some terrible filler, which is why general anime fans tend to have a passionate hate for it. If you want a great example of the terrible effects of bad filler, just look at Blue Exorcist. While the end of the first season seems all well and good, you get to the beginning of the second season and get confused and frustrated because seemed like they just hit a reset button when it's because it was filler.

Toshiki Inoue has an insane legacy of work in Toei. He's mainly known for his work on Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, but more notoriously for how his work fluctuates between extreme peaks and valleys of success and failure. It should be said though, his writing on Chojin Sentai Jetman is responsible for saving the Super Sentai franchise from cancellation at the time. Its huge success would lead to the creation of Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, aka the show that would be adapted as Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. He also recently returned to Sentai for the first time in many years with Avataro Sentai Donbrothers, which ended up one of the most successful (and absolutely unhinged) Sentai seasons after almost a decade of steady decline in ratings and toy sales. Also fun fact, the theme song (as well as the ending and several other insert songs) for Jetman was performed by Hironobu Kageyama - the lead singer of Cha-La Head Cha-La for Dragon Ball Z.

He's also very prolific in anime in general (most relevant here, wrote a lot of Dr. Slump episodes) as well as live-action TV, most famously superhero works like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, for which he writes...memorably, and with a similar "fuck it, we ball" attitude that's on display in the "one giant Dragon Ball" episode here.

13:57 that's actually a direct reference to journey to the west! Kinda. In it there is a character who had a magic gourd that will suck anything up that _does_ respond to it's name getting called, so that's funny

Interesting that Mark forget to mention the plothole during the training filler, when Goku went back in the past Master Shen(at that time still student) was portrayed as evil person, even though he was supposed to become evil after Master Mutaito died sealing Demon King Picollo away. For me that was really strange even as kid

Toshiki Inoue was heavily involved in writing episodes of early Heisei Kamen Rider (From Kuuga to Decade), a few in which he was the head writer (Agito, Faiz, 2nd half of Hibiki, Kiva). He was also the head writer of Choujin Sentai Jetman and Avataro Sentai Donbrothers.

I remember watching the wedding dress arc as a 5 year old kid on television, and ever since then it felt so Dragon Ball, I was shocked to find out that it was filler. It left an impact, because for the next 10 years of my life, until my discovery of the internet it was the last piece of Dragon Ball material I watched, since I never actually watched Z until I was much older. It was so Nostalgic seeing that footage in your video now, as a 29 year old adult. The eternal fire burning Ox King’s castle is just so Dragon Ball. The whole thing really is a Mytical Adventure!

Don't forget: That gourd not only sucks people in, it also slowly turns them into alcohol to drink! And at the end Goku uses it to suck the bikers into the gourd. Meaning he effectively killed those bikers in cold blood as he only survived the gourd thanks to the potara staff expanding creating a perch for him to sit on until the cork is removed.

Say what you will some of the filler is a banger 1. Garlic Jr may come off as lame but it's the first time Gohan plays defender of earth roll, plus the arc has og characters fight like Chichi and I'm always happy to see of DB characters fight. 2. More Frieza and Goku fighting is insane haha but can't be mad at all about it. 3. Ultimate Gohan lasting longer against Super Buu after Gotenks was badass, it really showed how strong Ultimate Gohan is. 4. Base Vegito "breaking in" his body was superbly animated

It turns out that Toshiki Inoue is a fairly renowned screenwriter with several works in anime and in Tokusatsu (live-action w/ heavy effects). Apparently, he worked at Toei since the Dr. Slump days. Some of his other works are on Urusei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, Yu-Gi-Oh!, some FMA episodes, Death Note, and lots of Super Sentai films & shows.

For me, the best filler is if it's funny or just made with an interesting concept, that's what makes me want to watch it. Unfortunately, most of them, for example in super were boring for me, but some, like the one with baseball, were really cool, as well as the driving episode (the best one in Z was very cool), but in the original there were only a couple, but made very well.

I don't know if other people will share my thought, but i would add 2 points to the Wedding Dress arc based solely on the sentimentalism of a widowed father (?) protecting the most precious present his daughter's deceased mother left for her, i think we (Mark and i, as well as many other DB fans) are in an age in which sentimentalism like that, can get really deep, specially if you also think that marriage, in the religious way, is a goal in your life and not a trap, specially a type of strong marriage like Goku and Chichi's.

i love that the Dragon Ball's origin story gets contradicted In a way that feels natural, Roshi is telling a myth so is 2 layers of World Building & then DBZ kinda hints that when The Namekian split himself into Kami & Piccolo their memory of Namek got completely jumbled... so there is a non-zero chance that the Dragon Balls were either one, or they used to not fly off

There are benefits to filler (when it's done well). I typically enjoy the type that shows characters during their off days, y'know, seeing what they're doing when not constantly fighting. Though ultimately I am glad that most anime nowadays don't really do Filler after switching from "Forever Shows" to seasonal. There are irregularities that show up, and the filler produced from those sure are... something. (I think like... Boruto is almost entirely comprised of filler...)

The time travel episode is honestly really sad. Roshi’s one true love is there, but then you remember: that takes place _before_ Piccolo-daimao’s original appearance. Maybe the reason he’s such a perv is because she *died* and he never learned how to move on?

My favorite filler arc is the heavily training work. It goes from Goku, trying to dodge lightning to Goku learning how to fish to Goku also learning how to use spiritual energy for master Roshi’s master master Mito. However, the cat was the fillers. I hate the fact that they may TN shout to Yuma and Killen do a visit a place that had a volcano that was erupted and they were trying to climb Karen tower. But the best best part about this arc is the fact that I learned what Pope was trying to teach Goku how to become a stone you have to be with your mind. You have to use your mind to see not just with your eyes it relies more than just your eyes to see.

Imagine if one of the hundreds upon hundreds of episodes of Naruto filler, made all the way back in like 2005 or something, would have been like "Anyways, this is how Naruto was born and the entire backstory behind the Nine Tails' attack, written by an intern at Pierrot entirely". That would be like the Red Ribbon Arc filler or the King Kai planet training filler. The sheer balls of these studios sometimes are impressive, then again, knowing Toriyama, it's just as likely that Toriyama would have never really bothered explaining the Dragon Balls in more detail or the origins of the Saiyans, so I can kind of understand why the studio would not immediately shoot down such a ridiculous notion from the start
