In the original series the fight with Guldo was actually longer. Gohan and Krillin could beat him, but Guldo had his power to stop time so he used that to escape their attacks. Once they finally cornered him he trapped them with his phychic powers and was ready to impale them with a tree. Vegeta caught him with his guard down and killed him, saving Gohan and Krillin's life

Since we're getting there quickly, before I watch this, I wanna give a recommendation. Between episodes 25 and 26 is when the next movie, Lord Slug, came out and would fit in best. Great Piccolo moments in that one. Because I could see the looks of confusion on your faces, the "look at your men, now back to me" bit was a reference to the very popular "Hello Ladies" Old Spice commercials feat. Isaiah Mustafa.

I really love the Ginyu Force and their theme song. It is an actual tune that the actors made. Tokusentai, tokusentai, tokusentai! Also, that Frieza song is another that a rock band made to hype up the tyrant. Toriyama was so impressed by it that it inspired him to bring Frieza back into prominence after years of languishing.

This is kind of glossed over in the abridged, but a part I like about the fight with Guldo(and also a later fight) is that it shows how Guru’s power-up for Krillin and Gohan was a steady boost over time instead of a sudden jump in power. In the abridged, Gohan immediately jumped to the previous arc’s Vegeta in power(around 18,000). In the original series, him and Krillin both were still only along the lines of around 10,000 at this point.

Another great episode and some added tidbits/facts the whole "had a crush on an indian boy" was all the way back in OG Dragonball; there was a bunch of guardians at the bottom of Kami's lookout and one of them was a boy named Upa, Krillin hit on them during that point The Ringtone that Frieza was using was by a japanese band known as Maximum the Hormone and the song was just called: "F", it got so much hype that they used it in one of the later movies added note: each of the Ginyu Force is named after a specific type of Dairy, much like the saiyans are named after Veggies Guldo: Yogurt Recoome: Cream Jeice: Cheese (Pretty easy I know) Burter: Butter Ginyu: (Pretty much the japanese translation for Milk) Added note because I forgot: Guldo's the weakest in the team but he stays because he has the powers to Stop Time by holding his breath

Late to the party, but can we just talk about the plot writing in the OG series, and how awesome it is that there are so many threads; Gohan and Krillin, Bulma doing her thing, Vegeta doing his thing, Frieza doing his own thing, and Goku just out there in space, and how it all manages to converge pretty seamlessly. It's genius writing.

Honestly i still remember how terrifying it was to see the ginyu force for the first time in the original show. 1st, how they first show up and act so weird that even frieza is so weirded out lol but after that, catching up to vegeta amd the lthers in seconds, making vegeta so terrified to go to the extend to break the dragon balls, how Buter's speed was enough to fly to, catch and bring back the dragon ball before the others could even react, and guldo taking the dragon ball from Krillin before he broke it by stopong time, of course at the moment they didnt know he could do that. It can't be understated how much of an improvement TFS Recoom is over the original. Even the DBZ Kai redub gave him a voice that sounds...very not PC towards mentally impaired people to put it as lightly as possible. TFS's solution was to make him a pro wrestler on a squad of super sentai fighters but villains. Also yes Guldo's Za Warudo quote followed by the steamroller dropping on Krillin is a direct reference joke to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure where the main villain of Part 3 for his final attack drops an entire steamroller on the protagonist and has a punching battle with him to try and flatten said protagonist. This was actually part of the Eyes of Heaven super moves video you guys watched. Its actually so iconic that this super move is associated with that character in pretty much every JoJo fighting game or fighting game they may be involved in, all the way back to the early 90s 2D Capcom Arcade fighter Heritage of the Future, a game that heavily popularized the attack as a meme way before the David Productions anime started off in 2012 that really helped popularize the series in the west. Bit of a pop culture tirade but I am wearing a hoodie right now themed entirely on my favorite villain from the series thats just literally David Bowie with a humanoid cat spirit manifestation that makes things explode.

Interestingly, the funimation dub started around when the ginyu squad appears, and sean schemmel (goku funimation) was so poor he was telling people " sorry, I can't pay for stuff, gokus still in the tube this week" as he didn't get paid if he didn't have lines

Freeza's ringtone is "F" by Maximum the Hormone, a Japanese Nu-metal band which officially got used in a DBZ:Super film released called "Resurrection F". Recoome is meant to parody typicaly WWF/WWE promos from back in the Rock/Stone Cold era, though I think he's meant to more specifically be a heel(villainous) version of Hulk Hogan. Zarbon very likely could have made it onto the Ginyu Force given that he was Freeza's strongest non-Ginyu minion. If not for Guldo's time stopping ability, I think he'd have been #5. The Ginyu Force are one of the most iconic groups in DBZ, very likely only behind the "Big 3" main villains of DBZ. Even in the original anime, they're all very entertaining.

the joke they made about team three star has lead to alot of confusion, which is understandable. there were actually only three founding members of team four star and they chose the name because in the original dragonball series the 4 star dragonball became sentimental to goku after his late adoptive grandfather left it for him. it was kind of an insignia for the series that became less prominent as the franchise grew. its why we see gohan wear it on his hat back in episode one of dbz/dbza. im sure they weren’t thinking it all the way through when they made the team three star joke but it was still a play on their name in someway or another and a fun joke nonetheless

Oh wow, a surprising amount of things to unpack here. Frieza's ringtone: Maximum the Hormone (Japanese hard-rock / metal band) - Fukkatsu no F, made a tribute to Frieza as he is potentially the most iconic villain of Dragonball as a whole. In fact, I recently heard that Frieza has the highest kill count in all of fictional villains upward to multitudes of billions of lives albeit mostly in insiniuation. Full song (not sure if it even has an official upload in KZbin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2KngmtumZiAi80 Maximum the Hormone is also known for making the intro and outro of season 2 of Death Note, which has a god tier OST. It was used as the main theme song for the Dragonball movie Fukkatsu no F ('Resurrection F' in English). Guldo dropping a steamroller on Krillin through timestop (Which he just shrugged off so nonchalantly, showing just how strong even Krillin has become after having his full potential unlocked although he is still pegged on par with Gohan) is a direct reference to Dio and his The World, Stand spirit which has the ability to stop time and is memetically known to drop steamrollers on his opponents. Although not a reference and just a personal observation; Guldo reminds me a lot of Dr. Psycho from the new Harley Quinn animated series. The music when Vegeta decapitated Guldo is from the TV series Six Feet Under, IMO one of the most underrated shows in a long time. Including gay characters that aren't just tokens too, which is sadly kinda rare nowadays. That Vegeta's "profane" rant was a thing of beauty. Really shows one of the reasons why censorship is my second biggest personal pet peevee as it was censorship that made it sound dirty. Fun fact, Lanipator (Nick Landis) only agreed to join Team Four Star and the DBZA project on the condition that he would get to voice Vegeta and I have to agree, he is so great on the role. And so Vegeta's journey to redemption begins. There is something about it that we don't get to see in DBZA, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

You're right Ken, in the actual show is absent throughout most parts of Z. It goes to show that just because Goku's the main character doesn't mean he's the main focus of the show. As you can see the story at the moment is focused mostly on Gohan, Krillin, and Vegeta.

When Guldo fights krillin and gohan, the ginyus find out they are way stronger than they look, leagues above guldo actually. But guldo's stopping time ability would led him scape right before they got him multiple times, until guldo use his psychic powers to paralize the time around them and right before killing them with a tree he manipulates to get a sharp, Vegeta kills him. Guldo does have a grudge againts vegeta though, mainly because vegeta knows guldo is weak and therefore shouldn't even be with the ginyus (whom vegeta is super afraid of even now after being much stronger) but as we know, is guldo's psychic powers that allow him to join the ranks of the strongest frieza team

Goku often being absent is definitely part of the original Dragon Ball Z. Hes almost always training or otherwise sidelined or incapacitated for the majority of the archs. Its why a lot of people consider Gohan the main the character of DBZ

Not to detract from what TFS have done - because they are hilarious and did amazing work - but I think it helps that originally, DB was meant to be a comedy. It was never meant to be taken as seriously as it has been and they didn't expect the action to be as popular as it was. Toriyama started to lean more into the action (and drama) with DBZ, but the comedy roots were already laid with DB.

Ginyu Force has to be where Season 2 properly takes its best form. Between editing, voice acting, comical timing, top marks across the board. As hard as it is to believe, this series is going to somehow keep getting better. Kind of as amusing as it is frustrating, yeah Vegeta knew from the beginning that he couldn't just rush in and drop Guldo despite being stronger than him due to the psychic and time stop powers. So he basically just used Gohan and Krillin as a distraction so he could go for the kill. If the two of them died along the way, he didn't particularly care. But at least he's helping the team now. ...Kind of. Guldo's time stop seems really busted at first, but something to keep in mind is that Guldo can only hold his time stop while literally holding his breath, making his application of it very limited. As for Goku being absent for most of the season, that is... An unfortunate truth to DBZ's writing. Essentially, Goku will usually do a little fighting at the start of the season (with Namek being an exception that Goku is in recovery) and then something will put him on the bench. Everyone else will handle the situation to the best of their ability, doing what they can to defeat the bad guys, but will inevitably hit a brick wall they can't overcome. That will usually be when Goku returns to the scene, acquire some new power, and take care of the situation during the eleventh hour of the season. It even became a meme for a while there, if something was going wrong then just wait for Goku since no one else seemed to be able to handle it. Leaderboard gets a big update this time around, giving us context as to exactly why Vegeta was in such a panic when the Ginyu Force showed up. These are the best of the best, Frieza's most powerful squad in his entire galaxy-spanning military. Though to be honest, I think Guldo might've only gotten in due to his abilities, because it sure wasn't due to his power level.
