I do want to point out that in the original show Vegeta says he was able to become a Super Saiyan because his heart was "Pure Evil". Pure badass totally fits this version of Vegeta, I just love that line as well

It also helped that he realized all his training meant jack shit and stopped caring about everything, about being better than Goku, about being a super saiyan, hell he stopped caring about if he lived on that planet. It was that moment of just letting go of everything, that triggered the “purity” needed to become a super saiyan.

Love the fact that they played Saiyan Blood during Vegeta's transformation as it is his theme. Also his line of push ups, sit ups and plenty of juice is directly from the dub of the anime where later, a certain villain asked how he had gotten stronger and the dub literally made Vegeta say "I did lots of push ups and sit ups. Also I drink plenty of juice."

So, to sort of clear something up, Vegeta DID unlock the Super Saiyan transformation similarly to Goku, that being through rage. However, this rage was directed at himself for failing to surpass Goku and being behind him in power. In other words, Vegeta became a Super Saiyan out of pure self-hate of his limits.

I'm surprised you guys notice the pattern in Dbz, where Goku gets put on the sidelines in the beginning and gets used later in the story. The show's creator, Akira Toriyama, will devise ways to take Goku out of the story so he can focus on other characters.

Man, it's great every time when someone who hasn't seen the series before watches this and sees Vegeta go super saiyan for the first time. But even beyond that, this is just such a good episode. To be honest, I think ALL of the episodes from this point forward are this good; you can clearly see one of the biggest things TFS improved over time was Fight Dialogue and this one really shows that off.

So to explain how Vegeta actually became a Super Saiyan. While he was away training (in the middle of an asteroid storm) he was beaten down and overwhelmed by the debris. While thinking about Goku and Trunks achieving the form as well as making short work of Freeza he finally said, " I don't care anymore. I just don't care" in that moment, not thinking about being the best, just survival, he became a Warrior with a true pure heart and he finally transformed

In the OG anime Vegeta nearly died in his attempt to acheive super saiyan, he eventually lost his proverbial shit and decided he no longer cared about surpassing Goku, in doing so he finally let go of the chains that were holding him back. He literally raged himself into Super Saiyan out of pure frustration. So the TFS take is technically right, but not for the correct reasons XD By this point though, Vegeta had no desire to kill Goku or anyone else, he just wanted to surpass Goku and show that he is the real deal given that he is Goku's prince and the rightful heir to the now gone throne of Saiyan king. Another detail I'll add is that Vegeta never refers to himself as a king, but says he is the prince of all saiyans. It can be interpreted in a alot of ways but the one I eye the most is that its out of respect for his late father's position. Vegeta is an ass, but he does abide by his own code of honor. It was also shown when he shot down Bulma's idea of just killing the android's creator; he liked the plan, but felt it was a cowardly thing to do. I don't remember his exact power level, but I do think Vegeta was stronger than Goku here, not by much though.

4:05 the real reason why goku didn’t take the medicine was because he was supposed to take it when he got the symptoms of his heart disease (which canonically was a new type of heart virus in the future, and not high cholesterol like TFS does it). But the symptoms appeared to goku much later in this timeline for reasons that will be explained in later episodes.

Episode 36 is, to me, What is DBZA about. It's the best "first episode" you can show to your friends. At least, those who knows about Dragon Ball Z. :)

Some trivia. The whole 'You need a pure heart to become a Super Saiyan' is another example of subtlety in language not translating well, like how "Jinzōningen" became "Android" when that doesn't fit all the android characters in terms of their nature. The way it was translated suggests that it meant 'pure' in terms of morality. Goku was 'pure good', Vegeta claimed to be 'pure evil' in the original series (and 'pure badass' here), and so on. What was actually meant by 'pure' was in terms of intent: you can't WANT to activate this power within you, you NEED to. That's why Vegeta never could back on Namek, while Goku did without even knowing such a power existed. Exactly what allowed Vegeta to cross that line in canon is a little vague, but it's suggested he could only access the power when he truly decided he didn't care if he had it or not, In any case, by technical terms, any Saiyan or being with Saiyan blood needs those two things to raw access the Super Saiyan state: a 'pure heart' or absolute need, for whatever reason, and 2) A moment of incredible pain and rage. Some sources suggest that the Saiyan also needs a power level above a certain number, because otherwise Goku by story logic should have accessed the transformation at at least one point earlier in the series because said factors happened (pure heart + immense pain and rage) if only those two factors were needed. But wait, isn't it indicated that Super Saiyan was supposed to be a singular, once in several dozen generations legendary power? Yet now we have three, with Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks, who's half Saiyan at that? The series never really delves into that after the Freiza Saga, though one of the non canon movies you'll eventually be seeing Abridged does. Also, in terms of mechanics, Super Saiyan gives a flat 50x power boost to a person's base power. So if Vegeta has a power level in his base form of 20 million, then as a Super Saiyan he has a power level of 1 billion, though at this point in the series, power levels stop being mentioned, and while there's scattershot semi official numbers for some characters afterwards and a lot of fan theories, the days of everyone getting a canon number value is done. This is also why you won't see Goku using the Kaioken any more: it provides less power for more risk (at best, he could spike it to 20x, ie 20 times his power for a brief moment, compared to a stable, constant 50x for Super Saiyan). And it was stated in some side materials that Super Saiyan and Kaioken do not mix, and that if Goku tried to use both, he'd basically kill himself. So no more Kaioken, I am afraid.

I would say the next handful of episodes might feel a little slower. But once a certain character makes their debut, stakes are raised, jokes land more frequently, we just reach DBZA's peak and it never comes back down.
