The beginning of this saga was all too real considering that an unseen enemy of the past came back to haunt Goku some 20 years later. Very dramatic. And then it had gotten "unreal" when 17 and 18 surfaced. Then the nightmare Cell emerged and achieved his perfection. The Android saga was the pinnacle of the DBZ franchise and has the best story line out of any anime out there.

The Android saga is the only really good part of the entire Artificial Human arc. Everything involving Cell is an utter mess, badly written and one giant gapping plothole. Cell's entire backstory for example, makes no sense!

A lot of anime stories are ruined for the better or the worse like Sailor Moon, the beginning. The US version was a s%%t show if you run it side by side with the JP version. There were a lot of things that did not make any sense until you watch the JP version. It would had actually upset a lot of parents if they didn't do any editing... There were a lot of same sex relationships around every corner, yet they allowed the fantasies to ship through like a 14 year old girl in love with a 27 year old man.

As much as the Z fighters had Goku who was always striving to be stronger and Vegeta chasing Goku’s power it’s doubtful that any of them would have been as strong without Trunks warning them. The combined motivation of the Androids arrival and in Vegeta’s case yet another unknown (at that point) super saiyan level fighter for him to chase would have made a significant difference

Super is what the series was originally supposed to go but seeing how it was popular overseas he had to appeal to everybody. I'll summarize: Akira Toriyama sold-out to Toei Animation in order to make another Dragon Ball series (Dragon Ball Super) and thus regressed Goku's intellectual character-development back to the beginning of DBZ to make Goku's character easy to script-write for; this is why DBS Goku acts so idiotic most of the time. Akira only cares about making $$$ now, and thus he made his characters as simplistic as possible, which requires the smallest amount of effort on his and his staff's part to make DBS's production possible. THAT is why Goku and his peers will never again be as well-developed in DBS as they were in DBZ~

Toriyama built up these androids and meant for 19 and 20 to be the villains, then the studio looked at them and thought they were far too silly looking to be the villains, so then Toriyama came up with 17 and 18, but then came up with 16 as well, these too were looked down by the studio so then he came with up Cell as the true villain of the android saga. There was alot of interference in the production and that's why it feels messy compared to the saiyan and Namek sagas. The build up and introduction were great, but I have to agree that 19 and 20 were just too silly looking. The other androids were fine as far as I'm concerned but I'm glad we got Cell as the final villain, he is definitely the scariest and best villain of the lot of them.

It's not the studio that complained, but Kazuhiko Torishima, Toriyama's ex-editor. He was no longer supposed to have a say, but he still called Toriyama to tell him: "so, that's the greatest threat the Earth has ever faced? A fatso and an old geezer? Surely, you can do better!". That's why Toriyama created 16, 17, and 18. But Torishima was still not satisfied, and he called back Toriyama: "great, now it's a bunch of emo kids! Find something else!". And that's how Toriyama came up with Cell. Because he listened to the negative feedback from his former editor. But then, it was his new editor, Yū Kondō, who was not satisfied with Cell's design, and that's how we ended up with Perfect Cell.

This was the type of stuff Super was missing. The first two arcs were retreads. The U6 tournament was just that. No stakes, even if they tried to make it seem like there were. The future Saga's destruxtiob had already happened off screen. We got Zamasu flattening the planet which was cool, but only lasted a few seconds before we got the Zeno nonsense. The ToP had the same issues. A lot of fun but no stakes. We all knew all the universes woukd get revived in the end.

Man, the worst thing to happen in DBZ was dr gero if you think about it. Gero only observed gokus fights with vegeta and nappa, and somehow had the data to replicate there techniques and ki manipulation organically. If he never had access to a saiyan like goku, androids would have never been this powerful. Gero stumbled on a gold mine of information, but man, it ended up creating the worst androids ever and even his super computer ended up creating cell with the information on namek. Weird how humans were the biggest threat to earth in a way.

The android saga is perfection in my opinion. And Bruce's score is flawlessly dark and brooding as always. The other versions without his score really lack the intensity the scenes required. I've seen snippets of the more recent dragon ball series, super, gt, etc and I got to say they really are missing the magic, finesse and drama that the older series captured so well. Everyone tells me I got to watch Super fully and give it a chance but, much of what I have seen already seems cliche and repetitive and makes me think it will be an exhausting experience.The older series really had some diverse, interesting, unique moments, themes and messages. And it's that originality that I often miss with more modern television shows.

If I’m not mistaking, I believe that this should have been Android 17 and 18 that showed up to the city to wreak havoc but ever since trunks showed up this timeline took a hard right and went down a different path where Gero didn’t activate the androids yet.

Remember Trunks wasn't there for this event he only has accounts from history and from his mom, who most likely didn't meet Android 19 and 20 when they first arrived.

There is no reason to believe 19 and 20 didn't show up in Trunks' timeline, and probably did in fact kill one or two of the Z fighters before being stopped by Vegeta, leading Gero to escape and activate 17 and 18, thus killing the remaining. Everyone wants to attribute the lack of Trunks being aware of 19 and 20 to some butterfly effect, when in actuality, the more reasonable explanation is that Trunk's was a baby, Bulma never actually saw the battle(in the Trunks timeline at least), and Gohan didn't find it notable enough to mention, or wasn't aware himself, or wasn't involved in the initial battle until 17 and 18 were already active.

@@thedude9941 That is correct, he does. However, he then goes on to contradict himself a few chapters and say 17 & 18 were the ones he was talking about all along. This was due to Toriyama intending for the only villains to be 19 & 20 originally. The manga goes on to pretend he said 17 & 18 all along and gaslights the readers. It was a mistake and should be disregarded when forming both head canon and hypothesis' in general.

People who didnt grow up with the Bruce Faulconer composed DBZ like to use Dr. Gero’s theme and “circus” sounding part in particular as the reason why this version sucks compared to the original. I say, it enhanced the HELL out of this scene. Was chaotic as all hell when I first seen this 😅

Given how tight Goku is I'm surprised he didn't just go Super Saiyan right there and destroy Gero with one punch. If Gero was weak enough to have his arms ripped off by Piccolo, then he's quite weak. I miss the original dub for this though when it aired on CN in 2000, Android 19 had a more robotic filter going on

​@@RigbyIsTheMan Still, it doesn't really make sense that he didn't power up after seeing what he did to Yamcha let alone the entire city. That alone should've enraged him greatly. This is slightly before Goku started feeling effects of the virus, so while he still would've got sick, at least the doctor would be down and they'd never be able to find the lab as a result. If Piccolo was more than capable of killing Gero, which he would've if not for Trunks suddenly coming back and taking his surprise thus giving Gero time to get into the lab. It's an interesting idea, the boy from the future comes back to see how things are and ends up making things even worse, although in the manga Vegeta said he'd kill anyone who got in the way of activating the androids. No doubt if Vegeta was in base Trunks would immediately power up and kill him just to prevent this. Even if Vegeta did activate them, they'd be really confused like why are we being activated by someone who isn't the doctor, and there are still the shutdown buttons, Trunks could snag them without anyone noticing possibly. A lot of what ifs in this arc. Trunks could've done this and just shut them down and destroyed them in the original future. But more likely everything played out mostly the same except Trunks went back in time to the original timeline with the blueprints for Bulma to make self-destruct buttons since Cell wasn't in that timeline except for the egg which I'm sure they blew up. Krillin probably also was not given the switch but someone else as a result of circumstances changing, or just blew up only 17 lol. Either way there's no way Trunks beat them alone.

He didn't. His editors rejected them as the villains. They thought Gero and Android 19 weren't intimidating enough cause they were just "an old geezer and a fat clown". So that's when Android's 17 and 18 were created but this time Toriyama's editors rejected them as being "a couple of punk teen brats". As a result we got Cell.

It really shows what a mess this arc was due to too much editorial medaling, I often wonder what this arc might have been like had Toriyama been allowed to stick with his original plan, he even said himself he thought 19 and 20 were fine and would have kept them as the main villains if it was up to him.

@@DarkDoge They weren't as impactful or serious, and felt more like a children's show where as the original DBZ and GT had a more serious tone that while they had silly moments here and there still always returned to extremes that brought the real emotional integrity back to the series which made you feel like the writer cared. I'd say Super feels like it was just extremely safe and didn't want to try anything other than making money while using the old popular faces and concepts the fans knew. Sort of like how Disney's Star War's movies felt, and Kai was basically just the concept of, (how much content can we cut out before people get upset? Oh, wait we can keep cutting out content and won't lose money?)

@@Squashylemon of course! It's probably the music with kai. Of course we can't hear the og soundtrack for kai because of the guy who made it plagrizied music. A lot of the original soundtracks for dbz were in mono, so I'm guessing they avoided those to have the new audio remain in stereo/5.1 surround sound. I enjoyed kai, watched a lot of the episodes and it had a lot of goofy moments still there but kept the extreme serious tone. It just it goes by faster because of the removal of fillers. It's pretty close to the Manga. That's what they were going for. And the reason for the cut for blood is because of the dumb censorship nowadays with Japan. It is extremely dumb. The Manga had very graphic moments, so I don't understand this censorship as well.

@@Squashylemon Exactly! The best example of Kai being more for children is when Vegeta is fighting 18 and blows up a truck with his big bang attack. In the orginal, the truck driver clearly dies. In Kai, they have the truck driver survive by not showing him but him screaming "hey my truck" after the attack. They watered the product down too much with Kai regardless of whether it was more faithful to the manga.
