I've got the Ocean dub on an all region DVD (possibly from Malaysia... and in proper aspect Ratio so I didn't get screwed over by Funimation and their inability to get the ratio correct) and HFIL is one of the things I like about the ocean dub. That and things like Brian Drummond screaming the line that he still believes he needs to apologise for to this day, "It's Over Nine Thousaaaaaand", Yamcha actually sounding pretty cool, btw Ted Cole's Yamcha is waaaaay better than Sabat's, it makes Yamcha look like Ranma 1/2's Tatewaki Kuno if he was actually more likeable and badass... which is an ironic statement considering the womanising sex hog of a douchebag of Furinkan High himself was also voiced by Cole... and of course who doesn't like the Lean, Mean Wolverine in Green himself Scott McNeil as Piccolo. I grew up on the ocean dub. I lived in Austin Texas at the time, and to think we lived really close to the Funimation studio... and when Toonami switched out to the funimation dub I actually missed Ocean dub vegeta and goku, cuz even though the lines were way corny, the voice actors were passionate. I remember the "Too bad it's sunday" and "Look i can see their parachutes" line and my parents were laughing hysterically and 10 year old me was so confused. Ocean dub is a guilty pleasure for me. Also, the breathing after death actually made the death scenes of the characters MORE violent than just dying, cuz it implies they're still suffering.

I'm pretty sure Gohan's thought bubble wasn't removed for censorship reasons. Thought bubbles aren't used anywhere else in the show, so what was probably a visual gag left over from the manga comes across as out of place, and the editors must have figured "Well, we're already painting over the blood and bare buttocks, might as well paint out this thought bubble and have Gohan's voice actor record an inner monologue instead." It's a change I don't necessarily disagree with.

It also could imply that while Frieza’s forces are efficient enough to just kill whomever exists until Vegeta showed them up, they did so by leaving everybody at death’s door, meaning that Frieza’s forces are now sadistic as opposed to just the equivalent of plot development people preparing a plot of land for a building.

I think I have the least problem with replacing any mention of death with the other dimension. There are so many places where people could go after death throughout various cultures - the other dimension doesn't really stand out from that.

Plus, they talk about it so much you cotton on to the fact “another dimension” is where dead people’s souls reside and “sending them to another dimension” is killing them. In fact, it jives nicely with the fact that the afterlife in Dragon Ball was actually in a different realm than earth, so they basically flavored their afterlife using unnecessary bluster.

For all “another dimension” is an obvious dodge from saying “they were killed”, in hindsight “another dimension” works pretty well, as a work that was based off of Journey to the West which had five different methods of immortality, and sort of gives it a cool flavor that this universe does not have the same rules as real life. It really helped, however, that they were very insistent with it. The very things that led it to be mocked are the same things that give Ocean Dub a cool flavor.

The whole other dimension thing reminds me of how the 4Kids dub for the Pokémon would always have trainers talk to their fainted Pokémon and tell them to "take a rest", in that it was an attempt to make it seem like the violent actions seem less violent than they were portrayed in the show. "It's okay kids, that animal that was set on fire and frozen in a block of ice will be okay, they're just taking a nap!" In both cases, they're really goofy.

+Caz To be fair, the "Pokemon just faint" thing was always a part of the main Pokemon series... which becomes a little amusing considering that the games don't exactly shy away from death (**COUGHCUBONEYAMASKANDPHANTUMPCOUGH**). +Caz But the "fainting" in Pokémon is also part on the Japanese versions, though there has been death in the Pokémon anime (rarely) and the 4kids/TPCI dub doesn't try to avoid it (most of the time), hell, they've even said that Brock's mother died when that's not in the Japanese version (causing continuity errors when she made an appearence in the series).
