Yamcha being very smart and well read has been a big aspect of his character in early DB, and one that I adore about him. Then Toriyama turned him into YAMCHA: The most prideful DragonBall Kharacter, before turning hik into YAMCHA: The Punching Bag.

It's even funnier how Team Four Star, the creators of Dragon Ball Z Abridged, made Dr. Gero's desire for revenge even more sensible. And DBZA is a parody. Android 16, the fully robotic android (In Japanese they're referred to as "jinzoningen", meaning "artificial human", and since the Japanese language has a lot of synonyms, the word can basically refer to androids, cyborgs (which 17 and 18 were) and even possibly clones, which Cell basically is, just extensively altered on the genetic level, hence looking like a bug man) that was also a gentle individual, according to Toriyama himself later down the line, was modeled after Dr. Gero's son. Now the issue is, in Toriyama's mind said son fell to an enemy bullet, whereas in Dragon Ball Z Abridged he was killed by Son Goku during his attack on the Red Ribbon Base. Which would make sense as it'd be even more personal than just "you killed my employers."

I know you can't really keep the story consistent when compressing multiple seasons into one movie but damn did the soundtrack and dramatic composition make up for it. Especially in the climax when Black went crazy with the mecha, declaring his new Black Ribbon Army and Eighter coming to the rescue, holding Goku's battered body with a beautiful song hitting at just the right time. Nice to have an epic final battle between Goku and a giant mecha, really enjoyed this movie.

New headcannon to fill this plothole: Guru *was* split into two. Nails was his evil half after many King Piccolo style egg reincarnations. Nails is on the verge of enlightenment because he spent nearly a thousand lives doing the more evil to less evil/less good to more good story arc and Guru is so massive and decrepit because he spent a hundreds of lifetimes aging (like Cpt. Over-censoring kid's cartoons has always been really strange to me. If you go listen to children pretending something violent (as children inherently do at some point), they usually don't pretend the villain only destroys empty buildings. Maybe using stories to help kids properly contextualize violence makes more sense than telling them that no one ever dies. But that's still giving into the conceit that most kids (or people in general) can't tell the difference between fiction and reality, and that's just stupid.

Really young kids don't understand reality or consequences but that starts to change pretty reliably by late single digits. I think in Dragonball's case, they rather did it to not make it seem like our "heroes" were massacring henchmen and villains left and right all the time. I saw Dragonball and Z uncensored in Hungary, and trust me I found it rather jarring that the good guys kill the bad guys without a second thought. After Superman and even GI Joe, this was pretty strange. Different cultures I guess, Japan has that "I will never forgive you for ruining my homework!" mentality (actual quote from Sailor Moon where they use this to justify to kill the monster of the day)

JackOfen actually Toonami aired the original Dragon Ball series before Z so that’s what made it more famous. Funimation also released the original Dragon Ball on vhs and dvd and advertised them on Z vhs and dvd. You can’t just say this movies made the original series famous because one person said it.

As a kid I was really into DB & DBZ but started to dislike them after I learned more about Akira Toriyama. There was nasty stuff written for Bulma in DB but such is the nature of the beast and it's minions, so we move on but some things in DBZ took on an even meaner edge.

That was always the correct pronunciation of the attack kamehameha, ever since the beginning of the Dragon Ball anime. I don't remember if the spelling was the same or not but I distinctly remember that originally they didn't pronounce the H's when discussing the move. The H's were only pronounced when someone was actually performing it and did the chant/scream. I remember because I always found it strange that so many people would incorrectly pronounce the H's in the attack name even though the anime had been (I thought) very clear about it. Now it seems like everyone has forgotten the original pronunciation and just use the same version as the chant/scream with the H's.

Yamcha really did get the shaft. In early Dragon Ball, it showed while Yamcha may have lacked in power or skills, he more than made up for in street smarts. Being a well-traveled bandit, he knew a lot about the lands around him and was a walking Wikipedia of martial artists and various techniques, with some local legends thrown in for good measure. For example, he knew of Master Carrot's technique of being able to turn people into, um... *carrots*, just by touching them. Granted, his warning too late to stop Goku from being turned into a carrot, but my point still stands.
