Hey spicy Exotics the reason why all your flower buds on the Purple Haze successfully pollinated was because when the flower droops over it ensures at that the pollen will reach the pistols
@Spicyexotics4 жыл бұрын
Purple Haze is Self Sterile so that is not the reason. Instead, fruit sets due to cross-pollination with another variety.
@Angry_Django4 жыл бұрын
@@Spicyexotics wait so is Purple Haze self-fertile or not
@Angry_Django4 жыл бұрын
I know that most varieties need cross pollination but Edgar Valdivia talked about the self-fertile varieties and what happens to the flower once it closes and droops over
@Spicyexotics4 жыл бұрын
@@Angry_Django When the flower begins to fade, it will still likely not release its pollen, and that's If the pollen is even good anymore. For us in Louisiana, we usually have a full 16 hours of pollen life span due to our high humidity.

@@CactusCaffeine I've had new growth appear before roots. For most roots appear within the first 30 days, but sometimes it may take up to 6 months. If the cutting is mature it may take longer to root.

The base weighs over 100 pounds. We have 4 cu ft of soil in each, at a minimum. This typically weighs 100 pounds. Adding water will increase the weight to 125 pounds. This is plenty for balance. We also experience Hurricanes in South Louisiana. I have yet to have one tip over through all the windy weather we experience.

It is native to Central America. I think the plant will do just fine in Zones 11- 8. Planting 4 or less cutting depends on how you will plant them. Some say one cutting, but I have 1,2,3 and up to 4 in one container with good results.All I use is cow manure that is always composted. Results have been good with this as well.I have never grown Dragon Fruit from seed, so I don't have anything to comment on. I do plant to grow several varieties from seed this year 2017.

When the best time to start tipping the dragonfruit ( winter , spring, summer,fall). Thanks
@Spicyexotics8 жыл бұрын
In the US, the ideal time to prune is November or after the last fruits are harvested as the cold temperatures set it. Then about two months after that I would suggest tipping. If your winter is mild, I would suggest tipping sooner.

When the flower turns yellow and falls off after bloom this is due an unsuccessful pollination.

+Spicy Exotics Thank you for your videos. Would you please tell me when to do the tipping. I live in Southern California (Pasadena area). I have some dragon fruit cactus plants and today I snipped off many new shoots from my 2 and 4 years old plants. I would greatly appreciated if you share some information regarding when to prune and tipping. Thank you !
@Spicyexotics9 жыл бұрын
+kenthwu Your welcome, more videos to come in 2016. I will share a pruning video this spring and include more information on my website. For now, when you prune depends on with variety you have and what type of system you want to grow. For example, a typical Hylocereus undatus is an aggressive grower and I found that pruning this variety using an umbrella trellis should be done in November. On mature varieties over 3 years old I keep a maximum of two stems that branch off. I also make sure the main leader stem has no additional branching off until it is above the top of the support. Lastly, I try to keep all branching as close to the center of the umbrella as possible. If you are looking for fruit quantity and size you should also consider doing tipping. This is done two the three months after pruning. I do tipping in February just before spring.
@joesabol14308 жыл бұрын
Thanks, very helpful I will try some tipping in Feb.
