I personally have 3 theories of their relations; 1) adoption, which makes me wonder how this arrangement came to be. 2) Human dad, dragon mom, which makes me question the biology, since the kiddo appears human. 3) Perhaps dragon mom wasn't always a dragon. I have no evidence to support this, but I also have no evidence denying this, either.

However 2 and 3 can go together if you go by dnd dragon lore (cuz everything in fantasy is somehow dnd related) because dragons has the magic ability to take human form. Some dragons don't cuz they feel like it beneath them. Buuuuut it does explain how people and dragons can do 'the deed" so to speak.

Wouldn't it be amazing if a dragons life cycle starts out as human looking? So that, in essence, the young maidens knights are trying to rescue are actually juvenile dragons who act as bait to lure prey to the mothers den until they are grown enough to change into actual dragon form and start a laur themselves? She's probably adopted, of course, but I thought it might be an interesting idea if fantasy creatures used bio mimicry to hunt or hide in plain sight.

I once read a online-comic were that was the case. Dragons destroy a village and the only survivors are actually juvenile dragons put there (with the memories of the person they replace) to grow up in human society without being hunted by heros/adventuree while they are still to weak.

My guess is the mama dragon originally kidnapped the kid, thinking she was the princess or whatever, (who was actually next to the kid, so, poor aim I guess) but after learning that they were actually an orphan, a street rat, and, at the time, delirious with fever enough to call her “mama,” the dragons heart went “TO CUTE! MUST PROTECT!”
