I'm surprised that no one brought up the fact that Dragon Quest was such a Japanese sensation, that when the third installment was released on a work day there, dozens and dozens of students committed hokey to buy it. Adding to that was students stealing copies from each other and attempted shoplifting of the game. Enix, at the time, who knows if this still applies, has promised the Japanese government to only release future Dragon Quest games on Sundays and bank holidays.

I don't particularly like either series. There are a few entries in each series though that I absolutely love for some reason, though. For me, I loved Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Dragon Warrior III, Dragon Warrior Monsters, and Dragon Warrior Monsters 2. Aside from those games though, I'm not a particular fan of either franchise.

Sadly here in Australia, I've never met another dragon quest fan, besides a friend who I introduced the series to. Nobody knows what I am talking about when I say "Dragon Quest is my favourite RPG series" then I say "Square Enix" then they say "Final Fantasy". I get hyped up whenever I hear someone mention Dragon Quest(namely Jon) because I barely ever hear people talk about dragon quest and even more rarely hear people as popular as Jon talking about it. I love Dragon Quest(especially 9. In fact I would go as far as to say it is my favourite game of all time).

4 years after this videos release, I can finally appreciate it. DQ11 is among my top 3 jrpgs of all time. Persona 5 and FF7 being the others. If you're on the fence about getting this game, just get it. DQ11 took me 120 hours to complete. I enjoyed every minute and although the beggining felt a bit slow, if just kept getting better and better. This is one of the few jrpgs that I know I'll be replaying again.

6:04 The reason for medals from Dragon Warrior 4 being in Dragon Warrior 3 for GBA is actually known. Dragon Warrior 1&2 were released on a single cartridge, and this was the plan for 3&4 as well. For reasons unknown to me (cost, size on cart, etc), that plan was cancelled, but the incomplete medal data from 4 was left in the game. The location (and other field data) is actually incomplete, and defaults to equipment characters, like the hat icon. I actually own a copy of Dragon Warrior 3 for GBA with all of these medals unlocked, AND I can save my data still. My friend had his cartridge break on him (he can no longer save), but he unlocked 26 copies of every medal in the game, including the Dragon Warrior 4 medals. If he trades any of the medals, it goes back to 26, essentially making infinite copies. We manually traded (cable link, back in the day!) every single medal to my game, and I unlocked the menus / medals in my game, but retained my ability to save. To my knowledge, I own one of the few (if only, who knows), cartridge with all of the medals, AND the ability to retain a save file. Anywho, figured I'd share, since it's a pretty neat / rare easter egg!

My guess is actually because DQIV had a release on PS1 and it wasn't a part of the Erdrick series (which is the first 3 DQ games) Enix was planning on releasing the PS1 remake of DQIV in NA, but it was cancelled due to Enix of America going out of business and Enix buying out Squaresoft.

If you are new to RPGs in general, I would recommend Dragon Quest IX. It has character customisation, it is, in my opinion, one of the best looking Dragon Quests, and the menu system and the skills, spells and vocations stuff is less complex. If you own a Nintendo DS or 3DS, then I recommend this game.

Dragon Quest is one of my favourite game series of all time. I love old-school JPRG combat, I love grinding for the next level and piece of equipment (and thus having those levels and pieces of equipment really come with a sense of accomplishment), I love the incredible sense of adventure, I love the awesome character designs and hilariously unique monsters. The GameBoy Color version of DQ3 isn't the only time you are not allowed to use the name of the hero. If you try to enter "Erdrick" as your name in the NES version of Dragon Warrior 3 the game will scold you with a text box saying, "Input your name!" and will force you to re-enter your name.

+Owen Parsons 10s a mmo so many don't count it as a true entry in the series. If we ever get it I'll try it out but I don't see it as a main dragon quest title I wish they would remove the X and give it to the new dragon quest coming to ps4 3ds and NX

Another factoid. In the original version of DQIV the party members other than the hero were AI controlled. Unfortunately, the AI was kind of...bad. The most infamous example of this is Kyril the Priest casting the insta-death spell Thwack on bosses who are naturally immune to death magic and frittering away his MP as a result. This is later referenced in DQIX if Kyril is met via DLC. Fairy-companion Stella will ask on the Battle Records screen "Who casts Thwack on a boss? Honestly!" Kyril's infamous AI is further referenced in Dragon Quest Heroes with his own ultimate attack. Said attack consists of Kyril repeatedly trying and failing to kill the foe with Thwack until he gets so enraged that he beats down the text boxes telling him that his spell failed and unleashes a devastating darkness attack from the wreckage of text boxes.
