This game is *seriously* underrated. Personally, it's my favorite game!

DQMJ2 truly is a journey with no end. There's always something else to do until you've gotten every monster, opened every chest at least once, uncovered every secret. I feel like a lot of games I've played these days are "you beat me, and now you can still do some stuff to truly finish me off and then I'm gonna sit here and collect dust cus you've done absolutely everything worth your time.", but it would only not be boring if the wi-fi competitive scene appealed to me at all. Sometimes, I wish I enjoyed battling with other players online, but I sure don't, which is why so many games get shallow to me after I beat them because everything's already unlocked and they're fresh out of new experiences. DQMJ2 is probably the biggest game I've ever played and heck, despite it being easy to put aside after the story, I wish there were more games like this out there that aren't region-locked. Would I make changes? Yes. Does that mean this game is not an absolute blast? Not in the slightest, this is an incredibly fun game throughout and it's the kind of game I wouldn't mind playing for months on end.

Quite the late reply, but I agree with this. I've replayed and beaten the main story and post-game of DQMJ2 more times than I can count, and I'm still finding out new things in the game from mechanics, to skills, to monster combinations. I recommend playing the English translated version of DQMJ3P for the best experience of this series to date. It feels like a dream that not only do characters from the past games and more appear, but there's a fully translated English ROM. The only thing to make it truly spot-on would be a synthesis guide from the people on the Woodus/Dragon's Den.
