Me as well yes. I do well remember how the butcher stating "Fresh Meat" chasing out my brother's warrior character away from that room. As soon as my brother and me shouting in the dark living room, we were both scolded by our mother as we were Catholic Family and told us not to play the game. My brother said it was my fault, but damned.... that scary butchers room somehow scarred the sheet out of my childhood. Now already done with D2, D3, and now waiting for D4.

"Thank goodness you've returned! Much has changed since you lived here, my friend. All was peaceful until the Dark Riders came and destroyed our village. Many were cut down where they stood, and those who took up arms were slain or dragged away to become slaves or worse. The church at the edge of town has been desecrated and is being used for dark rituals. The screams that echo in the night are inhuman, but some of our townsfolk may yet survive. Follow the path that lies between my tavern and the blacksmith shop to find the church and save who you can. Perhaps I can tell you more if we speak again. Good luck!"

When I was young I was told a tale. Tale of Blizzard North shippiing Diablo I Beta and realizing that ppl go creazy bout it. Than deciding to finish game earlier and move some nearly ready quests to Diablo II. I was always sure its just fairy tale told by me and other diablo fans. Just recently discovered Belzebub mod for diablo 1 where all those quests, with original voice acting, are brought back to life. Izual, Andariel, Hell Forge and more. Damn, this game was one of best games of my childhood even after being stripped out of lots of its original content. Such a masterpiece

I imagine deep into an old forgoten forest at a very dark night you can feel the fresh air through your lungs as well as the wet fallen leaves under your feet, you are surrounded by a forest of branches... every shape around looks as a dark shade because it is a night with no moon, the smell of charred wood appears occasionally mixing with the environment... your heart suddenly bumps abruptly you get that feeling of cold skin and at same time you feel the warm of your very own blood going all over your body

The mood this theme conveyes... amazing to this day. Tristram is the safe hub in the game, the only place where you're safe from the horrors lurking below. But you're never supposed to feel too safe to stay a while and listen. After all, you had a quest to complete and it was only a matter of time before hell would spill into the world.

This game, and many other games (regardless of what some people who try to besmirch this medium will tell you) is one of those groundbreaking things that one carries with him/her until the very end and even beyond. This is simply a token of what people are capable of, the testament of the power of art, the ability to change others with this sincere and honest thing that came out of the artist and was molded by everything the artist loved -- and put into a piece of art of his/her own in order to further draw the circle of wonder, and passion, and creativity.

When my wife and I made a haunted house for the neighborhood kids, we were out in the deep dark woods, had dozens of ghosts and phantoms strung on the trees, the moonlight spilling in through the autumn leaves, and THIS song echoing through the woods as they approached. I have to wonder if Tristram was inspired by an actual little town. It has its small plot of farming land, a few rivers and streams that crisscross it, its smithy, a village elder, a hermit's shack way off to the side, and even its own little humbly constructed church(which certainly stands out from a gameplay standpoint as "the place to go" with its stony frame and red hot glow). And then some wily game designer said: "Why not create a gigantic underworld beneath it that belies such self-sufficient humility and humanity?"
@emissarygw2264
@emissarygw2264 Жыл бұрын
Man I really miss that. The idea of descending into a church that's been corrupted and turned into an annex of hell. D2 and D3 just don't capture that feeling... like, "please go out to the wilderness and fight some midgets in a cave" just doesn't hit the same as walking into the basement of a demonically infested church that's glowing with eerie red light and then getting ambushed by skeletons and zombies popping out of coffins. Sure D2 was a technically superior game, but damn D1 really nailed the atmosphere.

There's some aspects of the games that were actually inspired by real events and people so I could see that being plausible that it's based on a real town. The countess quest for example in Diablo 2 is based off the "Blood Countess of Slovakia", from the Čachtice castle.

Still the best game in the serious and this is not nostalgia talking. Diablo 2 was great. Great music but lacked this feeling of isolation being stuck in a little village barely holding out. D2 took you to the desert and to a fucking rainforest...and let's not even talk about the disgrace that they call Diablo 3. But then again....most of the original devs had already left after D2. EDIT: I highly recommend Book of Demons. It is a Diablo 1 inspired games where you play with papercard characters. Nothing beats the original but in terms of gameplay and atmosphere this is as close as it gets.
