The 8 bit guy is one of those people who always seems to finish projects so ridiculously fast and to such a high standard. I've honestly never seen someone in person myself who can match it. For 98% of people this would have been a stillborne idea when you account for the fact this was hardly the only thing he was doing.

What a terrific place. Basically an interactive museum. Nigh overwhelming seeing a bunch of games that brought to mind the two local burger joints of the small town I grew up in, and the games that rotated through, and various laundromats and grocery stores when coin-op was fairly ubiquitous. And driving north for 90 minutes to go to the mall, which had no less than two big arcades! Just terrific. And the cool thing is, we can still play many of these games! Those guys are doing yeoman's work.

I wanted to play a game I loved in the 80s called Exciting Hour so badly I would have flown to Texas to play it, but thanks to some inspiration from 8 Bit Guy, instructions from Geek Pub and a sale on the raspberry pi, I built one. What skills do I have? None! I tried to hammer in a nail with a flip flop once, and I am not sure it was wrong. As for computers, I remember load"*",8,1 from an old commodor 64, but don't know what the ,1 was for. Regardless, thanks to videos like this, and about 30 hours of spare time, I have my favorite arcade game ever (minus cabinet art) Thanks for the inspiration, and thank you, Brett for reminding me of all the fun I had with those great games.

Looks awesome but I am curious how this can survive as a business? The bar cades here pretty much survive on food/alcohol sales, small footprints and only being open 3-4 days a week with post work hours. That place is huge. Everything just cheap in Texas? Coming from a Toronto perspective. Would love a place like that here btw

I live on the other side of the world and it's bittersweet to me to see such an amazing arcade appearing 40 years after most of the games were new. It's incredible to see the favourite games of my teenaged years side by side with games I've never heard of and other games I know but have never seen in real life, all in perfect working order. I wish the guys every possible success. Are all the games free play? That would be the icing on the cake for me. As a kid, my family and I were poor and I had to carefully pick and choose the games that were worth my money. I could spend days in this arcade. I hope it does really well.
@BigLeek-ig3sbАй бұрын
Yes they are. I believe all the ones that don't have a freeplay mode have a hacked coin slot with a button. On the website it says that it's 20 dollars for a month pass which actually isn't much money at all when you consider coming there a few times a month and the actual machines are free. I believe the standard entry is 8 dollars?

These bring back memories of the arcade at the swimming pool in the 80s. We couldn't afford to play and had to pretend we were playing the demos. How much do arcade credits cost in the US these days? It's crazy expensive in the UK, can't tell if the owners are milking it or if it's genuinely that expensive to run an arcade here. Arcade graphics always seemed so advanced compared to home computer versions years ago.

Wow looks great. Most important thing to me is that all the games work properly. Nothing worse than playing these old games and the controls stick etc. With the 8 bit guy at the helm I bet everything works perfectly. This is really cool with a great variety of games, adding the 8 bit computers, c64 etc and consoles is a nice touch also. Just one observation is usually the business model these days is to combine another business arm with the arcade, e.g. why so many went the barcade route. Having the food and drink there is a good idea though
@RealHomeRecordingАй бұрын
I just hope after eating people wash their hands before touching the joysticks!

I've only seen the barcade route up to now and while understandable I can't say I'm happy that arcades only seem viable if they also serve liquor. Not to mention the smell of (spilt) alcohol while playing an arcade.

While I was a child of the 80s, I missed out on the era of dedicated cabs for most games. By the time I started going to arcades, it was the second half of the 80s / early 90s and most games were in generic JAMMA cabinets by then. You'd sometimes get the proper game's marquee (at least I think you did) but the cabinet itself was just black, and there was no artwork on the control panel. I think by that time, arcade operators / corner shop owners were sold on the idea of swapping out JAMMA boards when they wanted to install a new game - At least that was where the industry was here in Australia at the time. So I see footage like this and it just looks so lovely.
