The 12 knights and King Thordan not only devoured the Eyes but the flesh and body of Ratatoskr, as told "And then fed upon her in the manner of beasts". The dragonic essence empowered the knights and their descendants as Thordan hoped, but the dragonic life force can be awoken through the induction of another source of dragonic life force. After so many generations pretty much everyone in isolationist Ishgard is related to the 12 Knights in some fashion.

@@thedragon133 , not even close. A sweet home Alabama situation would require that the surviving knights were all siblings or something, but it's way too far away from that kind of situation to make the connection. There were several surviving knights of different houses. All partook of the feast, but only the 4 main houses stayed in power. After 1000 years, all the immigrants into Ishgard would have in some way or another had relations with descendants of all the surviving knights that had also eaten Ratataskr's flesh. So yea, not a sweet home Alabama situation at all.

I remember doing this on AST and felt similar about not being able to heal him. One thing I later realized as I messed with more jobs and got further into the world building of FFXIV, White magic can only heal minor wounds and major wounds require rest and recoup as shown in several instances. Wounds that are much deeper, that causes a lose of limbs, permanent disabilities, or are fatal wounds aren't healable via white magic. Raises won't raise the dead either, they only recover someone who has been knocked out. The same description is present on the Phoenix down in the game which is one of the few items outside of healers that can raise someone.
@Wuffskers
@Wuffskers 3 жыл бұрын
it kind of has to be that way because with the amount of healers going around even just among the scions (Y'shtola, Alphinaud, and later Krile and Urianger), if healers could heal fatal wounds or even raise the dead then it becomes hard to have actual stakes, even if you just remove raise as a revival spell but have the other spells still be strong heals moments like with Hauchefant can't really happen, because someone could just heal him lol.

One thing to keep in mind with healing magic (and resurrection, for that matter) is that they can't LITERALLY bring someone back from death. They can heal some wounds and ailments, but if someone is very gravely injured, poisoned, etc. healing magic isn't gonna save them. In much the same way, resurrection, phoenix feathers and tonics bring someone back who has passed out, not who has actually died. There's a bit of extra lore in this specific case, that the knight who threw the lance has an ability that puts an anti-healing magic debuff on their target, but I think it's safe to say that even without that, Haurchefant was safely in the realm of "wounds too grave for healing magic to work" 🙂

See, I took Hraesvelgr's explanation of dragon memories less as 'it was like yesterday to us' and more akin with Midgardsormyr's previous explanation of 'dragons just don't move on until they get what they want.' Their emotions just don't fade without closure. That also somewhat explains why Hraes ate Shiva, he just could not let her go. As for the super knights, pray return to Praetorium, professor Van Belsar has an excellent lecture on the subject.

Best intro yet xD Note : At the end, with best boi's death, there's actually canon mechanics in the game (at the time of the HW expansion) that explains it. Paladins in Heavensward didn't have any magical defense reduction and that knight's attack was a mix of physical and magical LB prompt. They changed it in later patches as Paladins trained to overcome that weakness in lore. 2nd note : Even as a healer you couldn't have done anything, as in the world's lore when you're actually healing and rezzing the other players arenever in danger of death, more like being unconscious. As a healer you can never rez back people that actually died :(

One thing I really like about FFXIV dragons as a dragon lore nerd is the accuracy of dragon classifications. The wyverns have two legs and arms with wings attached, dragons are "true dragons" with 4 legs and wings, drakes have 4 legs and no wings, cockatrices are mini wyverns, Amphitheres have no legs and wings and wyrms are legless and wingless. This is extremely nerdy but I just love when properties take the time to get these details right I can't tell you how many times a game / movie / tv show will be like "Dragons!" And I just sit there like "that's a wyvern >:(" because I enjoy pedantry lol

So to clarify the Omega point - this happened during ARR patch content (yeah, I know, it's so easy to tune out that it's easy to miss). Basically, where Omega is stored (Carteneau) is so contentious among the Alliance members that they literally have a pact that any warfare between them in Carteneau will not be considered an act of war (this also happens to be the excuse as to why PvP can take place). This is intensified after you beat Gaius and it becomes clear what Allagan technology means (i.e., Ultima Weapon) - in fact, Gaius' efforts is what allows the Alliance to translate the texts required for them to discover Omega Weapon down there, so Carteneau is even MORE of a shitshow now. Part of the patch content explains Lolorito's plan was to send a huge portion of their refugee portion up to Carteneau and then claim it as a colony - that way, if the other Alliance members complain about imperialism, Lolorito can claim humanitarian efforts and go "Oh no, how cruel you all are" to them.
@RothAnim
@RothAnim 3 жыл бұрын
Correction, not Lolorito's plan, Teledji's plan. Take in the refugees, precipitate a crisis, take over Cartineau as a place for the refugees to live, then use that to claim Omega for himself. When the Scions interrupted that plan, Teledji tried to assassinate the Sultana and blame us. Lolorito figured that out, then swapped the lethal poison for a sleeping potion. He probably intended to play along with Teledji until he tipped his hand, then revive the Sultana and clear the Scions, leaving us all in his debt. But instead, Raubaun murdered Teledji in a rage, and we escaped. I think maybe both of them had influence with the Braves, with Ilberd playing both sides to fund his revolution/revenge.

Healing mechanics in FFXIV: Healing does not restore injuries purely through magic. It enhances and speeds up the natural healing of the body. That is to say, not everything can be fixed with healing and this is why surgeons and doctors still exist. Major wounds such as the loss of a limb or a hole through the stomach and all those vital organs, cannot just be healed up good as new. This is why Raubahn is still missing an arm after it was cut off. Speeding up a body's natural healing cannot heal what the body is now currently missing. Raise/Resurrection is not a "revive the dead" spell you nearly rouse people who have fallen unconscious. The only ones that can raise the dead are necromancers and the risen dead are then zombies/skeletons/etc. Not actually alive.

Edit: Lahabrea calls your character Bringer of Light, he always has called the player character that, if you rewatch the cutscene before fighting him at the end of Praetorium he says "It is past time your flame was extinguished... 28:00 Ha. This scene is where I noticed how the writing treats tropes. Like, whenever it employs them, they tend to either smack them down immediately so that they don't outstay their welcome, or the characters are really smart about them and they're handled in a way that makes sense. With Aymeric knowingly walking into danger despite everyone's warnings, it says a lot about his character and the Holy See. Other RPGs might have taken that scene and been like, "Oh yeah? Good luck, I'll catch you later." Then the characters woulda been surprised when they got word that things went south.

Still love these videos! Keep 'em coming! A general rule, don't worry if you missed something. If it is important enough, the game is very good at reminding you, and even connecting the dots for you in case you didn't yourself. You may miss coloring/filler to those points, but I find it just as satisfying, moreso even, when I get these after the fact. I think that is what makes watching new people go through this game so enjoyable (besides the shared trauma). There are layers upon layers upon layers of clues. From set design, to weather description, key items description, to random NPC dialogue. It all is there to serve a purpose, and nearly impossible to catch it all your first time through, so there is often a new revelation to enjoy while also reliving moments that hit you on an emotional level. I honestly believe that FF14 is emotional storytelling at it's best. Cheers until next video.

I think I might be misremembering but I believe the Padjali's immortality is tied to their presence in the forest. They can only leave if granted leave by the elementals for specific tasks or periods of time or else they age/die rapidly. This means Kan-E-Senna cannot leave the forest at will and more importantly she can do nothing without the elemental's permission which really limits any involvement with the MSQ. The other leaders are people, somewhat limited by their roles but ultimately free to do as they please. Kan-E-Senna is closer to a mystical being that obeys other rules.

Everyone does Kan-E-Senna dirty and discounts her. She was the first to declare war on the Garleans at the end of ARR which convinced the rest into action. She's a bad ass.

The elementals are screwy and pretty messed up, too. Leaving aside the whole thing with Odin and how the Black Shroud just randomly has a dark divinity roaming around committing mass murder, there are parents in Gridania arguing with a representative of the conjurers' guild because the conjurers are refusing to treat their child and are leaving her to die because "it is the will" of the elementals. Pretty much, our forest gods say your kid should die, sorry for the inconvenience. As a WHM this always made me uncomfortable.

Particularly poignant when we learn later that ... spoilers here.... Kan-E Senna originally did not want to be a Padjal but wanted to be more or less an Adventurer. Someone with an adventurous spirit not unlike our own but who accepted her role and stayed in the forest.

@@elixwhitetail I liked that they showed this side of things. Forests in fantasy stories are often Paradises of Perfect Harmony. But 14 shows us a more nuanced view: People can't live without respect and even love for the natural world, but nature is indifferent to human desires. Disobey their elemental laws and everyone goes back to living underground in bunkers. FF14 shows us the dark side of the city states right away in ARR - Ul'dah is an oligarchy with a sham monarchy, Limsa oppresses the Tribes, and Gridania is an ecological dictatorship. But we find a way to work with all of these people.

one thing to note about estinien- 'the azure dragoon' is a title granted to the inheritor of a set of magic powers. so, while yes, there is an unbroken chain from the prince to estinien, it's one from teacher to student, rather than father to son. the dragoon job quests go into it a lot, and you get some really good estinien moments out of them! you also get to meet the last azure dragoon, who is The Actual Best.

The Vault is the first dungeon where the dungeon design starts to shine. It has all the hallmarks that become better and better as you go on. It has direct story moments, great presentation, and the mechanics go up a notch. The last fight is so fun, it just introduces you to mechanics one at a time, and you can figure out how to deal with them even on a blind run, then it starts layering them on top of each other, so by the end you're trying to resolve the chains, damage zones under you, the horses, AND unavoidable damage all at the same time, while still having to do your own rotation. Even if you fail, the design of the fight itself means you'll start realizing it naturally. After that dungeon I honestly recommend not looking up guides for any dungeon or story trial, people are understanding if you just say 'hey first time here' even if you're the tank. Some people will even ask you 'hey do you want mechanic tips?' and will try to give them to you spoiler free, usually for mechanics that might be unintuitive the first time: "on this fight, chains mean you run apart, the rest you will understand on your own" for example.

You don't need to read external sources like books just to understand the basics of what's going on, unlike WoW. If it doesn't seem like you understand something yet, >90% chance it hasn't been explained to you yet and fun's coming down the road. There is short fiction on the website but it's supplemental to the game story, not where you find essential plot points. "Power Ranger" knights are like that because any sort of strong collective belief in ff14 is capable of creating primals given enough crystals. Also, the Warrior of Light and Bringer of Light is essentially the same thing, when you engage Lahabrea after destroying the Ultima Weapon he addresses you as "Bringer of Light." It's just how he, the *antagonist,* sees and addresses you versus how the *world at large* see you. With FFXIV, the antagonist is usually the protagonist of their own story, so from his perspective you are to be vilified and cast down because you're an obstacle on his path.

Some thoughts 1:00 "for some reason we're dealing with Moogles" - FF14 has a habit of indirectly telling you things. Remember the King Moogle stuff? His story may be exaggerated, but the point was Moogles (like Nyms/Tonberries) were caught between two warring factions who caused a Calamity (1st Umbral/Wind). Churning Mists (and likely Sea of Clouds) was the result, and these Moogles were left behind. 3:00 It's late now, but DRG 30-50 explains a lot. Thankfully, they moved away from prologuing job stories but some like DRK and SMN are minor epilogues to MSQ expansions. Also, I recommend one of you play MCH. Great story, more Ishgard, and it's a fun braindead class. 12:10 I'd recommend not overthinking. Without spoiling, you guys already understand the important info needed. (Allagan, not Garlean tech) 25:00 Missed that, nice catch! 29:43 - 29:50 Forgot this scene, but I'm blown away. They either meticulously planned everything or remembered and went back. 30:00 Midgardsomr purposely severs your connection to Hydaelyn, forcing a sink or swim situation. I think he's forcing you to become stronger, but can't explain my logic because spoilers.

The in-game lore of the healing is that healing basically enhances the body's ability to heal itself. You are not supernaturally healing the person as much as super-powering's the body's own regenerative systems. When you are in battle you do not die, the system labels you as incapacitated and the "resurrection" is just a gigantic boost to the body's healing powers so that the person can get back on their feet (even then when the person is back on their feet they have debuff as the burst of power fades and the final healing slows down). However, even the resurrection level skills have their limits. Given that you can only enhance the body's native healing, anything the body's healing could have not eventually healed by itself (decapitation, piercing of vital organs, loss of limbs, certain poisons etc) cannot be healed by magic.

Regarding "bringer of light", it's just the case that Eorzeans, Garleans, and Ascians all have slightly different terminology for things. You see this as well with the way that "primal" and "eikon" are the same thing, and there will be more instances in the future where fundamentally different groups of people have made different words for the same concept.
