as a teen I hated the film but a few years ago I started to respect it now as a hardcore og dragonball adult that watched the show in dub six times subbed twice watched z gt super dubbed and subbed and read the manga...its not that bad if you take away a few parts forget its dragonball and just watch it as a film..its a b movie and its enjoyable in parts..theres some really bad parts sadly but its not a 0/10 film..more like a 3/10..its watchable mostly...its just a bad dragonball film...its not horrible though..its a little boring and hard to follow story wise...I get it we all hate when they take a title we know and make us mad ruin it and we have to watch it because of the connection to something we enjoy but like just try to forget that and think about it on its own merit...its still meh but hey I don't hate it...it doesn't ruin the actual series and in some ways it made super exist cause it was such a bad taste in everyone's mouths...I think dragonball z fans expected it to be less og dragonball cause ya'll didn't watch anything but z growing up...lets be real..og and gt and even super for many of you is like no thanks just z...its a nostalgia thing...

@@joejames1794 i agree...i'm just playing devils advocate coming at it from an unbiased adult new perspective is all...like its bad from a dragonball fans pov but just try to ignore that and watch the parts that work like roshi piccolo bulma and yamcha ...I get it the script and actors can be horrible but sometimes if you forget its dragonball and just imagine its not related to the source material it can be enjoyable in a campy b movie type way...its fun in the middle to the end of the 2nd half...the first third outside of a little bit with roshi and bulma is awful i agree like unwatchable bad so like 30% is terrible but the rest of the film is not that bad ..its not good really maybe like 10% of the film is even slightly above average and works but its not a pos like some pretend...I don't get why they made their own story up either like it clearly was their downfall cause like how hard would it be to copy the arcs or you know the training/tournament like a mortal combat type film and set up a trilogy that way...the story is already written just copy it and people will watch enjoy and support it..the hermit training/tien stuff can be put into one film and tell a great story on its own..we don't need to go to piccolo or set it up ...just have a little intro og goku narrating that hes looking for roshi then he finds him meets kururin trains goes to the tournament and we see tien there a rival school student and bam movie is mostly written for you like a classic martial arts film and you can have the master vs goku fight as well put into the tournament before the kururin goku or tien goku fights..pretty simple

The sad thing is, Ben Ramsey's original script, most of which they THREW OUT, had more to do with the actual Dragon Ball than this did. He never saw the final movie, he just knows everyone hates it. How the marriage happened was Ox King and Chi Chi asked him if he wanted to marry her (when they were kids). He says sure and he doesn't see her for years. They meet again at a tournament and she's mad he's ignored her. She confronts him and asks if he still intended to marry her. He's says "sure". When he's getting ready his friends are shocked and find out he thought marriage was some kind of food. He still goes through with the wedding.

King Piccolo actually DID have an airship in the original Dragon Ball. Or rather, Emperor Pilaf had an airship, and King Piccolo took it off of him. I DO strangely enough have to disagree with the conversation about tonal issues in this movie at 48:00, because that's ALWAYS been a Dragon Ball issue. I remember on the show in one episode we cut from Goku with his dick out making jokes and looking for his Dragon Ball immediately to The Red Ribbon army realistically and starkly murdering a guy with glasses using regular guns instead of magical powers.

Let's be fair. The scene with the bullies was totally Kid Goku. He promised not to fight, and instead dodged everything, and mocked them for improper form while humiliating them without even throwing one swing. That is Kid Goku to a tee. The little guy was a savage when it came to fighters and him just letting the other person do all of their moves and innocently being like "Was that a punch?"

In dragonball before becoming a teenage Goku had done the following at least; - Killed Grandpa Gohan the master disciple of Roshi - Learned the Kamehameha after only seeing it be done once - Sent a giant rabbit gangster and his cronies to the moon... - Trained vigorously with Roshi for 7 months while wearing a heavy turtle shell on his back the entire time - Took second place at the world martial arts tournament (narrowly losing to Master Roshi) - Climber Korins tower (The place right below Kami's Lookout) in 3 days - Single handedly destroyed the red ribbon army even with all their tanks, planes and advanced weaponary - Defeated Mercenary Tao, a super human and one of the strongest humans on the planet, brother of Roshi's Rival and the one who trained with and taught Tien - Came second in another world martial arts tournament (this time barely losing out to Tien) - Killed the demon offspring of Demon King Piccolo, Tambourine - Killed Demon King Piccolo, the biggest threat mankind had known until that point - Reached Kami's lookout and trained under Mr Popo and Kami himself. - Got engaged to his childhood love (one sided) Chi-Chi. - Defeated Piccolo JR and won a world martial arts tournement. There are many other feats but by the time he reached the age he is in Evolution he was an accomplished fighter recognised by the strongest people on the planet, had summoned Shenron multiple times, had trained with a being who was essentially God of earth, murdered many humans and demons and was all around a powerful warrior only getting stronger. In Evolution he got his bike run over by jocks and is regularly bullied and called 'Geek-u' by them. How was this movie not the successful live-action adaption it set out to be? It had everything! A nonsense storyline that literally only has the character names from Dragon Ball and nothing else related to it, a nerdy looking white man with short hair playing Goku, low-budget costume design and poor cgi, Goku becoming a Werewolf-like creature, Fights that rely heavily on hanging from string, Goku going to high school and being a bullied outcast, everything! I guess none of us will ever know how this movie never spawned sequels despite the pre-release interviews stating that they are already working on a saiyan saga movie script that will be just as faithful to the manga and this will be. One of life's mysteries.

I like to see them do an isekai for once. Shield hero is my favorite, but there many other good ones like Re:zero, Tanya the evil, and Overlord. Those would be great choices to.
