I think the "ear thing" joke w/ 17 where he kills Gero is the perfect example of subtle callback humor. Him saying "Sorry Doc, just following orders" 🤌🏼 referencing him quipping earlier that he has an auditory bug where everything Gero says sounds like "Kill me" was great

Oh yeah, Scott's episode breakdown videos are just fantastic. Somehow, despite being a huge _Dragon Ball_ fan, I had never even _heard_ of _Dragon Ball Z Abridged_ until not even a year before it ended (during the hiatus between 59 and 60.) It might be because I'm an old man now (47,) I don't follow social media, and I'm not part of any online _Dragon Ball_ fandom (which I unfortunately find to be... mostly pretty annoying.) However, it _did_ mean that I was able to binge the entire series before the final 3-parter, and as part of that I went through to catch up on everything I could find and watched all of his excellent episode breakdowns as well. Wonderful stuff.

Couple things: 1. My headcanon is that Dr. Gero was totally into the whole "trucker" fad back in the 1970s. Like he totally played "Convoy" in the background while working on his earlier Red Ribbon Army projects. 2. A while ago I actually suggested to my sister that we do a sibling cosplay of 17 & 18. She really loved robot characters, her hair was blonde at the time, & I just wanted an excuse to dress up like a good-lookin' dude. Essentially, when Gero says something disrespectful and makes 17 mad, he explains it away as "all I heard was 'KILL ME'." Btw can we talk about how 17 is one of the most underrated villains in all of Dragon Ball? Yes, 18 obviously was complicit in ruining Trunks' timeline, but I always got the vibe that 17 was the instigator, he just has this sadistic side of him that wants to screw with people and torment them for his own amusement, 18 just kind of reacts to his BS, perhaps because they're siblings, they were kidnapped and turned into cyborgs, so they have this common bond, and she seems kind of bored like she has nothing better to do, no real purpose in life. I think the scene where 17 screws with that old man with the gun is so creepy and that's lifted straight from the original. Like this poor old man barely survived his town being slaughtered and risks his life to try and kill the one responsible, and 17 toys with him. Again, 17 is not an alien or part of an evil clan of warriors or something. He's just a regular human being who was given superpowers. That's what makes him scary to me. "Why are you doing this?" "Why not? Who's gonna stop us?"

They bring them to life the same way the Ginyu Force was brought to life, but in the Ginyus' case, a lot of that was due to the writing salvaging most of them from the status of disposable minions, so it's hard to gauge how well the VA alone would have done the job. The changes to 17 and 18 are subtler, giving their voice direction more of a chance to shine, and they absolutely fucking kill it.

@@MMTrigger I don't think a LEGITIMATE ROYAL HEIR Prince of all Saiyans can be considered a bastard. Usually when nobility is involved, the term is reserved for illegitimate offspring. But to be fair, we don't know much about Saiyan culture. I can imagine that aside from combat, Saiyans could have actually produced exemplary cooks for the upper echelons of the nobility, as all Saiyans have voracious appetites, but ultimately figuring out ways to make nutritious AND delicious food would have been something for cooks to TAKE PRIDE in, and a Saiyan's pride is something to be reckoned with. Maybe they even had incredible carpenters and stone masons and other sorts of handymen that needed to take pride in their work and produce necessary infrastructure, so, once again, pride. Or maybe they lived in caves and ate raw meat all day every day and punched each other to sleep.

I always thought the Piccolo complimenting Gohan line was him embracing his inner "parent". Leaning into the "Piccolo is Gohan's real dad" bit. Him baring witness to Vegeta, a real father, being that scathing to his own offspring must have made him feel that.

It's not really leaning into the bit; the bit's certainly there, but it also makes just as much sense for Piccolo to say it from the angle of a surrogate uncle as it does from that of a surrogate father. Even TFS at this point was leaning away from the "Goku is a horrible father" joke and more towards "Goku is an ignorant father who simply doesn't realize how different Gohan is from him".

I'm glad you guys plugged the Episode Breakdowns, I looked forward to those as much as the actual episodes back then. Also I completely forgot back when you guys watched episode 14 with Zarbon saying "I believe that was the space duck, sir." I remember a video back then of Kaiser showing how he was doing lip flaps on a moving shot like that in Premiere. I don't know if this video still exists but I swear I remember it. That was actually one of my first times even seeing digital editing being done in something other than Windows Movie Maker (I was young and didn't look too deep into editing, don't hate me), and that video he did motivated me to take a video editing class in high school, which eventually got my foot in the door for a visual effects career. So Kaiser's editing showcase helped me find my passion and eventual career in a vague roundabout way, so thanks Scott!

I can't imagine they could possibly have been his first attempts. It makes way too much sense if they were just his most complete successes, proof of concept before he designed 19 to perform the now-successful process on him.

This arc of Season 3 is probably my favorite: from the introduction of 17 and 18 through to when Cell absorbs 17. And a lot of it has to do with the fact that 16, 17, 18, and Imperfect Cell are all written and acted so incredibly well. They play so well together, it just all comes together perfectly.
