I hope y'all realize just how impactful this show as not just for y'all as creatives, but for us. The inspiration it gave to millions, to become artists, animators, VAs, sound designers. Y'all made something that can truly be given the title of masterpiece and I can't express my appreciation for the amount of time, love and energy that was put into this by you as the writers, the many voice actors, the musicians, all of it. DBZA, when I first started watching it way back in 2016, it inspired me to want to become a voice actor. And I still want to to this day. DBZA made my days better. If I was upset, or needed something to make me laugh, I'd watch the Frieza saga, or the Broly movie. And I'd immediately smile, and laugh and just feel better. Dragon Ball as a franchise and DBZA helped me through a lot of my darker moments in life, and I'll be forever greatful.

He did not want to kill an innocent person. Big mistake on the long run, but kinda understandable. 7. Cell would've killed both with minimum effort. 8. Same as before, Cell was out of their reach. 9. Same as 7&8, Gohan was no match until he went apeshit. Gohan is a kid, and this mess was not his ultimate responsibility. That does not mean either that he was any better than any of them when he got the upper hand. Goku had to die for him to do things right.

Plus their teamwork sucks. It was ultimately not his fault, and he was forced to clean up the mess, but that’s not to say he didn’t make his own mess in the process. Fortunately they won, and Dragon Balls can fix anything as long as it’s not a plot decision.

I had a friend who was dealing with serious health issues who sadly isn't around anymore, one of her things she wanted to do was wanting to watch the entirety of dragon ball z as a whole from start to finish which wasn't realistic at the time. So me and her sat down in a discord call and watched the entirety of DBZA from start to finish in 2 days, she went from not really knowing too much about dragon ball to loving Vegeta and Cell and Trunks. She loved the work you all did and I want to thank you all personally from the bottom of my heart that you were able to bring her the laughs and joy in her darkest times. Aw man, yeah my older brother got me into dbz back when it was on Cartoon Network in the afternoon, so it was awesome getting to introduce him to dbza later in life, and it was so his brand of comedy and we bonded over it together all over again. ​@@ItsB3enLikeThis Did you watch the commentary? That was the point they were explaining. Gohan was put in an extremely unfair situation he can't escape from. Goku made him fight Cell which he believed was for "the greater good", the Cell Jr's attacking the Z Warriors is Gohan's fault for not wanting to fight, the destruction of Earth, and the death of billions will be his fault. But why is it his fault? Because he has potential to be the "best" fighter. He's just a child, that's bs, Goku didn't realize that Gohan isn't a fighter, but it's too late, Cell has changed his target from Goku to Gohan. But on the other side, how much can Gohan excuse not being a fighter to allow what's happening? He isn't a fighter okay, then Cell will just have his friends, family, and then the entire planet killed, but he's blameless because he isn't a fighter right? Even though it's unfair for Gohan, like Cell stated, there are people (Yamcha) who are much weaker than him, but they're still fighting because Earth is their home and lives are at stake. Then there's 16's speech, like he mentioned, Future Trunk's stories all end with "and then he died too", that's why he returned to the past, the last hope of the future being the time machine. And when he finds out that whatever he does in the past doesn't affect the future, he still chose to stay, why? Because he's lived a life where people could only hope they survive another day, because at any day, the Cyborgs can just show up and kill them, and he doesn't want the people of the past to experience the same. There's a line that can be excused, and Gohan had crossed it (albeit unfairly without a choice in the matter), there's no "I'm not a fighter", excuse anymore, if he does nothing people will die, either lives will perish or he kills Cell, that's the ultimatum he's been dealt with. That's why when he finally snaps, as they explained, it isn't a triumphant "The hero has awakened", it's a tragic "The hero was forcibly awakened", it's epic in the sense that Goku was right, and this was the untapped hidden potential that we had seen time and time again, finally being awakened, but also tragic because an 11 year old had to throw away the innocence they held in order to awaken it. That's the dichotomy of 16's speech. On one hand, Gohan is forced to be a fighter and that's unfair, on the other hand Gohan is the only one that can fight Cell. The "you think you're better than everyone else" doesn't literally mean Gohan think he's better than everyone else, but holding onto pacifism and not being a fighter ain't shit if Cell is gonna kill him, his friends, and his family.

I’ve always loved the way Piccolo says “…Gohan…” after the transformation in this version. It expresses so much. Both shock and pride at Gohan’s power, and yet also, a kind of disappointment and sorrow that Gohan’s been pushed to this point, losing his innocence based on the expectations of his father; something I’m sure Piccolo is VERY familiar with and doesn’t wish for him.

I've seen some folks complain about y'all's version of Android 16's final speech being too harsh, and I think what they forget is that it is necessarily cruel... but not inaccurate. In the original scene, Gohan deliberately Does Not go all out against Perfect Cell BECAUSE he's scared of his own power. He knows he can unleash that power, knows how much he has, and knows how destructive it is... but when faced with the destruction of Earth and everyone he loves? He STILL does not let go. He tells Cell this in the original, and when Cell gets excited and is like 'ooh, how much damage do I need to I do to see THAT?' Gohan still panics and Does Not give his all to stop a monster who most certainly WILL kill everyone there. And while the situation leading up to Gohan fighting Cell is admittedly shitty, with Goku springing it on him last minute (seriously Goku, you couldn't prepare him for the possibility that 'we're training together bc I might not be enough. If that happens, and Cell takes me down/I'm not strong enough to stop him even with all of my strength? you will have to step in'? ugh) AND restoring Cell to full strength, it just proves the point further. EVERYONE So far has fought until they were drained, fought to their absolute final limits to stop Cell. Tienshinhan used the Kikoho, a technique that in the series LITERALLY shaves his life down years at a time if used extensively, and used it continuously until he lost consciousness, Android 16 fought with his skull smashed open, Piccolo fought until he had a hole blasted through his chest and was thrown in the ocean to drown, both Krillin and Vegeta had their spines broken trying to stop Perfect Cell. Later, Android 16 is willing to sacrifice himself right before Gohan's eyes to stop Cell for good, gets blown to nothing more than a head for his trouble. And Gohan STILL doesn't, go all out. In fact, he outright refuses to. In the OG show, he knows how powerful Cell is, knows that this is, without a doubt, someone who will murder everyone around him for shits and giggles, will destroy the planet without a second thought, and STILL REFUSES TO GIVE HIS ALL. THAT IS EXPLICITLY CANON. In the original, it's not until Android 16 as a head, tells Gohan that it's okay to fight to defend those you love, that words cannot reach everyone (tho I have to question WHY anyone would think Cell could be reasoned with, but I digress), that while he does not like to fight, it is because he cherishes life that he must protect it... and THEN gets destroyed for it, that Gohan finally snaps. It's not watching his family and friends get brutalized by the Cell Juniors, it's not Cell's very existence that pushes him to do his best. It's not even Goku's plan with the senzu bean and Cell that drives Gohan to fight with everything he's got (further proving that that plan was absolutely asinine from the start, if only because Goku, while loving his son, never truly understood him). It's the realization that he can no longer afford to be a coward. Gohan WAS putting his own fears and anxieties about himself above everyone else's lives by refusing to give it his all. He IS the strongest person there, and he hid his head in the sand, waiting for someone else to fix it - except no one there was powerful enough that they could do it for him (which mirrors TFS' realization in the time chamber when Gohan first turned Super Saiyan). With great power comes great responsibility. If I'm completely honest though... I prefer the Abridged version of Android 16's speech, BECAUSE it strips away the gentler nature. Here is a character we have seen find the joy in the softer nature of life, grow to love and cherish others and step back from his intended purpose as a literal killing machine... and he tells Gohan he understands, but now is not the time to hold back. He can no longer afford to, bc all that will be left to him otherwise will be nothing but his failure to do anything to stop it, all the while knowing he had the power to do so. The original speech was from a machine made to kill stating that you do not lose your humanity when you fight for what's most important, and for those you love - that in fact, fighting to protect those you love is more human than anything else you can do - pleading for Gohan to let it go and give it his all. TFS' version was a sharp slap to the face because nothing else was getting through at a time when no one could afford to hold anything back anymore, including brutal, unflinching honesty that Gohan was a hypocrite, willing to let others suffer and die because he was afraid. I also like how they play it, as almost a defense mechanism in Gohan that needs to be snapped to access it - subconsciously, Gohan associates that anger, that raw strength, with tragedy and pain. When he first accessed it when he was 4, his father died right after; when he tapped into it against Nappa, Piccolo died; and when he tapped into it against the Ginyus, his spine was broken. Honestly, if TFS ever decided to revise their earlier seasons to include some of the character stuff they let loose on in Season 3, it would be interesting to see if they touched on this aspect of Gohan's character. It could have made for a truly devastating gut punch if that was the case. Either way I love what we got here, and am very happy you guys took it more seriously at the end. The scale of growth you underwent making this series is a joy to watch.

It's just sounds like he's making excuses though. He's trying to come off weak as possible so people stop asking and expecting him to fight. He's done this since he was four. He only went crazy on namek due to grief and went with everyone when freeza showed up on earth when trunks showed up, because they were in a big group (safety in numbers). Plus vegeta and piccolo were there so the chances of him fighting directly were reduced. Despite the year, year and a half peace, namek hardened gohan and for awhile he was down and willing. I think goku throwing him in the deep end freaked him out and reverted him back to the 4 year old we met. He was afraid, now stressed, and being asked to do the finishing shot or else. It's why he tries so hard to back out, to not fight and make excuses why he shouldn't be here. Its why he's angry at goku too, for putting him on the spot and given no choice.

I really liked hearing Scott's explanation on why he wrote 16's speech the way he did. As someone who didn't like it much when I first watched the episode, this commentary gave me a new perspective on it. While I've gained a newfound appreciation for the Abridged version, I still have a soft spot for 16's original speech. He delivers the same basic message (if you don't kill Cell, everyone dies), but he does so in a much more understanding way. He acknowledges Gohan's pain and why he's holding back. In a way, 16 uses his final moments to comfort him as well as give him the wake-up call he needs to unleash his anger. Plus, I'd argue that the "good man doing nothing" message is conveyed without 16 saying it outright. 16's death serves as both the trigger for Gohan's transformation and a reminder of what'll happen to everyone else if he doesn't end Cell. Plus, Gohan most likely feels at least partially responsible for 16's death, given that he could have prevented it if he had let go sooner. While the Cell Jr.'s were beating his friends to death and Cell stomped 16's face in, Gohan just watched, paralyzed with fear. Once he turns SSJ2, he finally has the resolve to kill Cell and make sure that he'll never be able to hurt anyone else. Anyways, that's just my two cents on 16's speech. I love DBZA and it's been a blast getting to watch the team's commentary.

Man I still get chills from Gohan's moment, and god do I agree with your opinions. When this came out I was spending hours arguing with many people to vote, to protest, do something. Sometimes the arguments left my throat raw. They just couldn't grasp why I was so passionate. I grew up with friends who almost got deported. My father's office was right in Flint, MI, USA and the amount of water he had to bring. I still haven't come out to my family due to their political beliefs, and knowing their choices. I think the one thought that went through Gohan's mind after 16 was gone is that if he does nothing because of his emotional, personal, even logical distaste for violence, and his fear for losing himself in that anger, then he will only be aware of everything he will lose, including himself. Everyone else fights a losing situation because hope dies last for your goals and survival. If he loses himself to the anger, then it's a sacrifice that he should have been willing to make ever since the beginning if it meant keeping, like 16 said, everything you held dear alive, because it has meaning regardless of you being there. That should be more than worth it... And it started with the fact that because Android 16 is not human, the Dragon Balls could not bring him back, and, just like everyone else, would never come back. Just like 16, which was the first permenant death of a good guy, all would be lost forever if he didn't act right then and there. Free yourself. Don't ever be ashamed of what any part of you might be, because you'll never be complete without it.

Android 16's speech to Gohan did ruffle my feathers. As somebody who related himself to Gohan, it felt...bad. I don't have the words to describe what I felt. Remembering how he still mess up later, hearing about Android 16 trying to set off Gohan, and the unfairness of the situation helped a bit. There are a couple of quotes from media that I would like to think exemplifies me. Realistically though...when have I ever fought for anything? I probably am a coward. Maybe I'm just trying to carve out a spot in life for myself. Lincoln has a line from the Spielberg movie, “A compass, I learned while I was surveying, it’ll point you true north from where you’re standing but it’s got no advice about the swamps, deserts and chasms that you’ll encounter along the way. If in pursuit of your destination you plunge ahead heedless of obstacles, and achieve nothing more than to sink in a swamp…what’s the use of knowing true north?” "When I choose to see the good side of things, I’m not being naïve. It’s strategic and necessary." from Waymond in Everything Everywhere All At Once. For Gohan, in this instance, it is pretty clear what needs to be done. For me and hopefully others, we are never going to have to choose between a singular pure selfish evil and the fate of the world and galaxies. We have to contend with anything from minor slights and differences in culture and upbringing to ideology, politics, generational hate, trauma and violence. Who among your friends and family become enemies? When do you go all out? In the end, these are projections and issues that I have to work through, not really the fault of the media. The truth hurts right? Anyways thank you guys for all of your hard work. Every couple of years I have to watch and relive DBZA, so this commentary replaced it this time. Their discussion of 16’s speech and Gohan’s transformation hits so hard always, but the concept that you cannot be silent in the face of injustice - “the good man doing nothing”. Stand by that speech, it is a fantastic piece of writing, it was performed incredibly and it’s a message more people should internalise.

it's great but I do want to note it should be remembered that there is a vast gulf of difference between doing nothing in the face of injustice and pacifism as a philosophy, because the latter does not by any means equal doing the former it's not cowardly to refuse to perpetuate cycles of violence or participate in what for the majority of history have been jingoistic imperialist dickwaving contests between hereditary elites who think nothing of spending human lives like cash for their own interests

@@Feasco i agree, but i always felt like thats kinda the point they were trying to make. Choosing to not continue the cycle is all well and good in theory, but this is a scenario where there is LITERALLY no other option. Its different in real life, but here if gohan doesnt kill then everyone he knows and loves will genuinely die horrifying deaths on the spot. Itd be like if police officers were refusing to shoot at someone who was torturing hostages just because they believe life is sacred, because of course IT IS but theres times when you really do need to dispose of or at least pacify a greater evil for the sake of not letting it continue on till theyre bored. Life as a whole would be better if we could all agree doing bad things is shitty, but unfortunately that type of utopia just isnt the reality, and though its a rare case watching a bad person do bad things when youre genuinely the ONLY person on planet earth who could step in and stop them just makes you negligent rather than a pacifist. Pacifism is a positive ideal in theory, but not a ideology that is feasible in all circumstances when it comes to wanting the greater good to always prevail. This was one of those rare situations where pacifism genuinely helps nobody

​​@@tntkff9901I get the general sentiment behind the saying, but I feel there is often a nuance that is overlooked. 'Prey' animals are absolutely capable of ruining your day. Rhinos and Hippos lack sharp teeth, but absolutely will destroy anything they perceive as a threat getting too close to their territory. A Moose unless it is immature, old, sick or injured is fully capable of wrecking a pack of wolves trying to bring it down. Yes, there are plenty of animals whose main method of survival is simply to run away from danger, but the 'meek gentle herbivore' view can often be quite off the mark just because it doesn't need to hunt to survive. Horn and hoof are just as capable of ending lives as fang and claw.

@thomaslinford6313 they inspired me to try be more engaging and involving with other party members in my dnd group and I based my character, Ripley Gentlestream, off of Beverly, in the sense that my half elf has lived a sheltered life spoilt and doesn't know of the dangers/ reality of war and bloodshed and its making pretty funny dialogue when we come across bandits etc as he'll make comments such as "this fake blood is so realistic! These actors are so into it!"

I said this years ago, but honestly I did not like Android 16 saying "Grow up" here to motivate Gohan, because it doesn't make any sense for his character. his character in DBZA wasn't about being an adult or growing up, he was growing INTO himself but that doesn't mean he necessarily has a connection to "growing up" as an adult. His entire dialogue there felt extremely weird, but that's just me. It felt like someone completely different took over for Android 16 and wrote it.

Kaiser said that he wanted this moment to do justice to the original moment... im not gonna lie, this moment as a 36 year old man, gives me deeper chills than the orginal. cells line in the original "Yet another life you couldnt save." Cells line here "Id like to say he went to a better place, but we both know he never had a soul." This version of cells like was so much more cold, and i see the snap trigger here even harder. Thank you guys, all of you, the writers, the voice actors, the production, music, all of it. Thank you. This scene couldnt get any more Perfect, sorry Cell.

I have probably watched DBZA more times than I've watched actual DBZ and even after all of my viewings of DBZA I STILL get goosebumps from Gohans transformation into SS2. 😊 It's just fucking amazing and beautifully done. That scene, even now, brings tears of nostalgia to my eyes.... It takes me back to sitting on my friends couch, both of us shouting, dancing and cheering Gohan on as he transformed and both of us smiling and staring in quiet 'awe' as Gohan brutally dispatched the Cell Jr's. ❤ And Cell soon after. I don't know about the rest of the fanbase, but for me personally y'all succeeded in taking me back to when I was a preteen and watching Gohan transform for the first time. As Lani said "TOOT THAT HORN!!!" Because y'all nailed it! 😊

Your Day of Fate song has been my sobriety anthem, and I could write essays about what you guys did with Android 16, his character arc, and how deeply it resonated with me. I started watching during the Saiyan arc in college, and I can safely say that over the past 15 years, this silly internet parody has fundamentally tuned and strengthened my core values. I feel like the work that you've done has such a positive impact on the world, and we were all lucky enough to be along for the ride. I think the thing with SSJ2 Gohan is more just the whole feeling of "Oh god, is this a good thing? A bad thing? Is this even Gohan anymore?" There wasn't really time for a bit of levity like what we had, especially cause you know Piccolo and his roommates would all be thinking that same thing about this being good or bad.

1:07:01 I get that 16 speech was meant to make gohan snap. I get it, i get that it was unfair, i do. But to me, the whole "i'm a pacifist" bit with Gohan, and the speech came out of the left field. Oh sure he says he is a pacifist at that moment. But is he really? He has been fighting just as much as everyone else, maybe mot right now, but many other times before, that doesn't sound like "pacifist" to me. It just... doens't seem to fit with what gohan is actually strugling with. And i get that it was meant to be a wake up call to other Peopole watching. But to me it always sounds like it's being said more to the audience then to Gohan. So, my interpretation/headcanon for DBZA is that the speech has zero effect on Gohan snapping. None at all. What actually made him snap was watching Cell kill 16.
