Well explained, thank you for this review. I love the simplicity of this system & it reminds me of BX D&D and the modifications my friends and I made to it for our game it back in 1981.

Great preview and matches my thoughts when reading the Quickstart. This seems streamlined, well thought out, likely deadly and it has some cool options that don't rely on ever inflating numbers. I'm looking forward to adding this system to my arsenal.

Really well explained review! I will now.kickstart this, thank you! I used to play a ton of Drakar och Demoner in my childhood, such a large part of my growing up :) In this new system they have kept the core it seems, but added a lot of improvements

I love the use of HP once WP is depleted for Magic Spellcasting! This is kinda a way to do Raistlin-style (Dragonlance) spellcasting if you like, and that's pretty cool! I do not like Death Saves, but I do understand it (current usage for familiarity out there) since it's incredibly deadly....I mean monsters that aren't weapon users like the PC's auto hit. 🤔 I can't wait for character creation and other such things to actually begin playing with the alpha/beta (what it's called) for us Kickstarters. Nice coverage! 👊

Day one backer here, I'm really looking forward to seeing the monster manual for this game, I love the attack charts idea. Takes a lot of weight off the GM in game. I also hope there are more race related abilities you can invest in over time.

Agreed. These two features are similar to The Forbidden Lands. One of the criticisms, my players and I had with that game was, that many feats were uninspired and boring. So this is a point, that I hope Dragonbane does better.

@@Sebbaasdungeon It would be cool to have things available like mallard breath holding, wolfkin natural attacks and "moon rage" or similar and maybe halfling "stout heart" for resisting fear and mind control magic, etc.

Throughout the whole video I thought...ah, this feels like my very first days back in the ninties as an DarkEye RPG newbee...but much better. And then I hear you saying exactly that! So yes, I totally agree...this is what DSA should look like! I think I will back this...

It certainly looks interesting for me because I was looking for a more streamlined BRP-like system. However, I'd like to know which professions will be available in Dragonbane, specifically will there be anything like a cleric/priest? Needless to say, priestly magic would have to be done differently than wizardly magic.

You'd have to ask the writers which classes will be in the final system. But why is it needless to say that priestly magic will have to work differently. (mechanically, rule wise?) Is that something crucial to the setting?

Simple straight forward BRP system. I understand that it will use Exp to buy higher skill abilities, which I prefer to the standard BRP increase system, which is randomised. Magic appears powerful and direct. I think anyone can cast but that it isn't ubiquitous and most characters won't be magical casters. This was something I never liked about RQ, where everybody has a spell. The setting appears clear and not so developed as to be impenetrable, which is how I find RQ. This just seems better to me. This could be RQ for the rest of us. I can't wait.

Great Review......not sure how i feel about monsters always hitting, shouldnt RNG apply to them as well?

I think this rules only applies to big monsters. Not something like a pack of wolves, or some goblins. It's kind of anti-climactic, if you describe how your giant troll swings an entire tree as a club at a PC, just to miss, and nothing happens. Like this, the characters have to react to the attack, and save themselves. It puts more emphasis and the actions of the PCs. This only works, because of the active defense systems.

Sometimes I hate KZbin, because the algorithm didn’t feel the need to start showing me Dragonbane content until a few days ago.. now I just have to hope that free league will offer a deluxe bundle for purchase on their website 2 years from now

If you get a condition on your CON, will it affect hit points too?

This might be blasphemy to some, but I wonder if you could apply this combat system to a game like Heroquest… is it possible to bring Heroquest to a D20 under system but still use the board, story and quests of HQ, so as to keep to the physical tabletop mechanic, and not quite the role playing aspect.

Unfortunately 5e will never die, it's community are like battered prisoners born and kept in a dungeon. How can they perceive light when they only know of the dark? Shame they didn't have critical injuries though, by far one of my favorite free league things and death as saves are just so boring.

@@ShadowsofRlyeh I was going to do that anyway, but I was hoping we would get more tables as I quite enjoy the ones they've made already. I even use teh Forbidden Lands Critical Injuries for a Old Swords Reign game right now.

Honestly I was expecting more from Free League. I'm pretty disappointed. I've been reading tons of BRP game system rules the past 2 months (probably 10+ games based on this engine) and was expecting FLs take on the BRP system to be one of the best versions, not the most watered down version. I was also really, really hoping they wouldn't use their lame card initiative. I'm still in on the KS though, I do like the way monsters are handled (even though splitting rulesets between normal NPCs and Monsters is clunky design) just really hoping there's a ton more meat on the final ruleset otherwise there's be no reason to use it over Elric, Jackals Magic World etc...
