Dragonbox Pyra Handheld

The Pyra is a very rare UMPC that's been in development for nearly a decade. At the time of this video, the original pre-order queue still hasn't fully shipped yet.. While its purpose is mostly deprecated due to time (old SoC, and substantial growth in the handheld space), the team behind the Pyra project is still working on its development to this day.

I've gotten a pinephone, a pinephone pro, multiple accessories for them and a Librem 5 in the time I've been waiting for my Pyra, with years to spare. I know it's not apples to apples comparing Dragonbox to those other companies but still, I've never seen someone so content with taking his sweet ass time to get a product out like Evil Dragon.

Exactly, and it is a dinosaur too. I was in the order queue for the original Pandora for many months before giving up. One of the best decision I ever made, this was obsolete and clunky even before the development started.

@@cloudycolacorp That sound like an issue with the ribbon cable which has been improved on the pyra but still if I had a problem like that on such an expensive device I would be bummed

Why bother a Steam Deck or Win Mini is way better than this thing. I owned a Pandora but it paled in comparison.

Ended up getting my money back. Thankfully Evil Dragon gives out full refunds (for now). Countless better options have come out since this project started.

I really don’t blame you, even if you get it, it’s basically on the same tier as a Raspberry Pi with how… “alpha” the software is on it. Cool as an oddity and tinkering device, but it’s nowhere near as polished as the Pandora OS experience was. GPD has some exceptionally enticing options that will outdo this in every area.

At this point it’s basically an oddity. My thoughts are at some point, the project will likely die unfortunately. Leaving maybe only a couple hundred of these in the wild, as niche and unique as it is, I’m gambling they will be pretty $$$ as a collectors item someday.

@@dialupdavid unlike any other handheld, this has a modular cpu board, so in the future since its entirely open source either ed or someone else can develop a new board for it.

Perhaps this can serve as a cheaper alternative to the similar devices by GPD . I would be interested in this simply because no one else I know has one and I would actually use it during commute. Speaking of which, if orders aren't being fulfilled, how did you manage to get one? I would like to get one as well.

You’re totally right, the only potential savior here is that the SoC is modular. Though seeing how bad software is after this long still (firmware, kernel, drivers, power management). I don’t think that will happen.

I dont feel bad for CraigX here. The guy was a right prick, fucked up an order of mine in 2003-04 for a gp32 flu unit, it got to a point I had to call him out via an old forum, in which i was banned lmao and insulted for "lies" and somehow my order came in fine right after. These guys in that old space coukd have combined, from the people who made the emulators going on to start android emulation handling software, to the biz sides such as Craig and everything in between. They did no such thing, kept it in a very small clique (greed) and it could have been huge. The stagnation stages of open handhelds would never have happened, and it could have received GPD levels of success. Thats what happens when people think there irl peaky blinder characters 😂😂.

I own one... I regret not cancelling if I'm honest. As @dialupdavid has said the software is still nowhere near even the level the Pandora was. Its a bummer. It sits in my "collection" but I never really got any computing use out of it. I'm not giving up though. The sunk cost fallacy is real here.
