Oh wow, I'm actually in the audience of this talk. This is the reason I ordered A Year at the Movies, which ended up being one of the best journal-style books I've ever read.

Kevin and Mike haven't aged much in 10 years. That is to say, Kevin looked middle aged in 2002 and he does now, and Mike still has that kind of amiable former-high-school track star-gone-track-coach look going on.

Kevin's book was real fun to read but alas to be honest Mike's humor doesnt translate into bookform, so if this video makes you want to read one of their books make sure it is Kevin Murphy's "A Year At The Movies"

I loved Mike Nelson's Movie Megacheese! His book of essays gets a little repetitive (and slightly pretentious) but was still very enjoyable. I just ordered Kevin's book but wish Mike would write more.

You can screw up anything, but messing up names is kind of unforgiveable.

When Episode 1 came out in theaters, the manager at my attending theater gave a small intro and personally thanked one "John Lucas" for creating another Star Wars film.. And boy could you feel the temperature in that room rise noticeably! I still remember the nerdy roar in unison of "It's GEORGE!!!!" Bahahaha

Mike Nelson destroyer of Networks?
@AvengerII7 жыл бұрын
Dear Lord, no! Those networks were in trouble well before the SOL sailed through them! It would have been mercy killing if he HAD been able to destroy them for good! It's a toss-up about whether Comedy Central or Sy Fy is the more pathetic network. Personally, I think Cartoon Network has been run for at least 12 years by guys who were trained to program or run networks at CC or SF so CN is technically a worse network than the other two!

@AvengerII7 жыл бұрын
Umm... Kevin, I agree with you nearly 100% up to the point where you say you can ALWAYS tell a film is lousy by the trailer. That's not true. Trailers have traditionally done the best job of CONNING the potential audience into SEEING a bad movie. Sorry, but the trailers for most of the Star Wars films (excepting the first one which was of a half-finished film with very fake-looking lightsabers, NONE of the classic John Williams music, and an eleventh-hour rushed look to it) were excellent and most of us over 30 recognize at least half those films were lousy! Likewise, the trailer for the 1989 Batman movie convinced people to see that film. Not so many us alive 28 years after the fact think that film was fantastic, either. It certainly hasn't aged well, IMHO, and the best things from that film that I remember were the excellent Danny Elfman score and the 1989 Batmobile design. Granted, there are films that are so lousy not even a clever trailer can con you IF they can cobble a decent trailer from the footage that was shot. Ironically, the worst trailer I ever saw COMPLETELY gave away the plot twist in a major movie starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer (What Lies Beneath) but that's getting a little bit away from the Kevin's premise which doesn't hold by my own experience. There was no reason at all to watch that movie after the major plot twist was given away FOR FREE in the trailer!!! The way I choose to see films is based on concepts and ideas that are interesting to me, NOT CELEBRITIES. This inevitably means I STAY HOME most of the time and rarely go to a theater more than 6 times in a year. My average is closer to 3 maybe, 4-5 in an unusual year. That's my attendance record for at least the last 20 years. If anything I will tend to stay away from remakes of classic movies and TV series (99% of which are horrible anyway) or films that star celebrities (NOT actors, there's a difference) who I don't care for... This has less to do with their personality and politics than the fact that I've never been entertained by those people in ANYTHING they've done. Occasionally, yeah, I will skip something if someone's been a complete and total asshat on TV. That's still a short list of MAYBE 5-6 people whose films I will not watch and even that's not absolute.
