love how the writers were pushed into characters.. and all based on the premise of riffing on movies, a concept that had limitless possibilities. hard to have writers block when the movies are providing your material. brilliant.

I love MST3K, and love both the Joel and Mike episodes. The only sad thing is my perception that Joel, Trace et al. don't get along with Mike and Bill. I don't know if that is a real thing or a myth perpetuated by fans, but it still makes me sad. I also thought it was a little weird that the MST3K kickstarter wasn't somehow related to the Rifftrax site, since Rifftrax is so clearly based on MST3K. In my head Rifftrax is a direct descendant and the most successful MST3K-like venture by any of the folks who worked on the original. Maybe it's a legal thing, and not just a personality conflict? That there was no Mike or Bill interviews in this video makes me sad.
@verenahodge86438 жыл бұрын
+TaiChiKnees My impression is that at times there has been more or less tension, like a rock band, or any work environment really. I love Rifftrax, particularly the live shows! But Cinematic Titanic--Joel's group with Trace Beaulieu, J. Elvis Weinstein, Frank Conniff and Mary Jo Pehl--was just as funny and just as much a successor to MST3K. In the film clips on the Kickstarter, Joel explained that the MST3K rights were tied up in court for a long time, it wasn't between them it was with the channel or something, one big reason that hadn't tried any kind of re-boot until now. But now that's all fixed, and it's obvious they are sharing the rights because Rifftrax started showing old MST3Ks on their website. Joel broke up Cinematic Titanic (at the time I didn't know why but I suppose he was starting to work on the new MST3K), and Mary Jo Pehl is working at Rifftrax now, so clearly no bad feelings there. I've also seen members of the two groups tweet to each other and the like. When the Kickstarter showed up, Mike posted on Facebook, after clearly being badgered relentlessly with questions, that Rifftrax was his baby while on MST3K he had been a hired hand, and he was happy for them but he wasn't involved. (I'm sure I didn't paraphrase that perfectly, but the update is way too old to find on Facebook at this point.) Later Joel, who of course was bombarded with questions as well, posted a video clip update on Kickstarter saying anyone could come back as creative talent if they wanted to. He posted a longer answer, this was from only a few days after the Kickstarter started so he had no idea they'd get all the funding - "Question #2: What about everyone else? Are the other MST3K writers and actors coming back? This is the hardest question to answer, because there are several moving pieces involved. Right now, I don't know who will agree to come back and work on the next season of MST3K… but if the Kickstarter is successful, everyone will be invited to take part. Until yesterday, I wasn't even sure this whole Kickstarter idea would work. I've reached out and spoken with some of the old cast and writers, but until I knew how much money we'd have to work with - and when we'd start writing and shooting - there was just no way to make the specific offers that I hope will bring many of them back. Plus - as many of you know - so far, the old cast haven't been compensated as well as they (or I) might have liked. I wish I could go back and fix that, but if I'm going to ask them to participate in the next season, I want to be certain we can pay them what they deserve this time. As soon as we pass our initial goal of $2,000,000, I'm hoping to start making the invitations official, and I hope some of them will be able to join us before we start working in January. But there's another thing I should say here: As much as I love the old seasons, we're not just trying to make an "MST3K reunion episode." Even if we do get our entire old cast and staff to come help out, I think it's important - essential- that we bring in new talent to keep the show fresh, and to help it evolve. To do that, it's important that we bring in the next Host, the next Mad, and the next robot voices. And if everything goes well, there'll be a dozen more after them... At the same time, I'd love to work with the entire old team again. Mystery Science Theater 3000 became the show you know and love because our writers and actors were - and are - some of the smartest, funniest people I've ever worked with. If they have time to come back for the next season, I'll be so excited to work with them again. But even if everyone comes back, we'll never be able to reproduce the magic of how those old episodes feel to you. No one ever could. People usually think that the “best year in music” was they year they turned eighteen. In the same way, the “best year of MST3K" - for you - will probably always be the year you turned 13, or 16, or 18, and your parents finally sprung for the good cable package. To misquote Rick James, nostalgia is a helluva drug. We can't compete with your memories, and it would be kind of silly to try. But we can try to make something that today's kids (and adults!) can discover, that will give them the same feeling you once had. And hopefully give you long-time fans something new to enjoy, too. That's the goal, anyway." So I don't think it's as dire as you may think, and I wouldn't be surprised if they did a few cameos and such to make the fans happy. I am very excited for the new MST3K, I think Felicia Day and Patton Oswald will be great, and I know the writing will be great like every other project any of the old MST3K crew has done.

Yeah Jim Mallon is basically the reason for any drama. Everyone has had some kinda bad history with the guy. Trace left the show cause when they switch to Sci-Fi he found out that Mallon had creative control rights on Forrester and Crow. and I think I heard an interview with Mike where he said he doesnt gets any royalties cause of Mallon.

A reason for the lack of Mike et all. interviews is probably that they were really upset with how royalties and payments were handled for past episodes. To make a long story short, they basically received NO money for the Shout Factory DVDs and rebroadcasting. Only recently have things changed and now they're able to release episodes on RiffTrax to make some money, but it was less to do with Mike/Joel rivalry (which is more a fan thing) than simple business complaints about payments and mismanagement. Don't blame Joel or Mike, blame Best Brains, Shout Factory, and Jim Mallon.

@AvengerII7 жыл бұрын
Frank was NOT at KTMA... He joined MST3k AFTER it started at Comedy Central. He was there second season through the sixth as a writer and actor. I frankly think (no pun intended) the show was better with him as one of the Mads. The chemistry was NEVER the same after he left. The show survived well enough after Joel left and they transitioned to Mike but I do think the combination of Frank and Trace as the Mads made a HUGE difference to the show. There's no as many people who prefer the "Pearl years" over previous seasons and very few people who think the first year at either KTMA or Comedy Central was the best. There were a number of guys who joined AFTER that first year at KTMA. Kevin Murphy was one of the few who was there FROM THE BEGINNING to the end. A lot of the other guys came on AFTER the show was picked up by Comedy Central -- that would be most of the people who actually wrote for the show because they were actually getting paid salaries after the pick-up by Comedy Central.

Um, yeah, almost Soviet Russia level of revisionist history. Josh did not "decide to leave." Mallon is an egomaniacal Dunning-Kruger idiot who wanted to change the show in stupider and stupider ways, and it became impossible for Josh to stay. Watch those early episodes, especially the KTMA ones, to see Josh's word play, structured comedy, you know, all those things that are "too smarty" for someone with Mallon's limited intelligence to understand. This eventually became so bad that even Joel couldn't work within that environment. So Trace, Frank, Mike, and the other idiot had no problem dumbing it down to poop jokes, laughing at that own jokes, stupid mouth noises. Their riffing is usually passibly OK, but the host segments are just sheer torture to watch. Bill came on after Trace left, and he was able to turn things around to some regard. I think Jim was having less interest in the show by then, so Bill could get rid of some of the potty humor and make the riffing passable again.
